Guys???

No political issues please, It'll only turn out in flaming

I didn't say anything politcal, and admitting to watching C-SPAN should not bother anybody. Wow I didn't think admitting to being a nerd on here would get you in trouble. Now in school, I would probably get beat up. :)

While no one has stated anything overtly political, there was a comment made about the protest, at you-know-where. And while that itself is not particularly political, Corrus is right to call attention to it, because such minor comments than that have ended in locked threads.

It's nothing personal, just precautionary. :)

so, anyway....addressing what was, IMO, a legitimate, inoffensive question:

C-SPAN can't be beat when you're looking to get away from the droning blather of the commentators on the regular networks and just focus on the droning blather of the speakers at whatever event you're watching. I enjoy C-SPAN for convention coverage and have been known to catch an occasional congressional session on there. (For example, I tuned into a marathon state senate session from Massachusetts last year when you-know-what was the big topic up there.)

I've noticed that a lot of "news" shows do this, even our local news is heavily biased. You just have to keep this in mind and take it all with a grain of salt. I mostly find the news shows amusing rather than the intended informative.

...and that in a democratic country is an unfortunate state of affairs. Journalists should be able to take on governments and push them, not be outlets for them. :(

This is a fine line, though. The media is obligated to report what the government says and does, even if the only reason the government does it is to get coverage by the media. The government certainly has perfected using the media into a fine art, but by the same token, the media can't just refuse to cover the government because they recognize a "staged" event in action, or they get accused of not doing their job. The best we can do is try to determine what is important enough to warrant coverage (and maybe dig up some SUBSTANTIVE things that those in power don't want out there, "substantive" being the key word) and then let our analysts do their thing by explaining what it all means, since they aren't expected to kep their opinions in check.

I watch C-span quite often. I like the early morning interviews and viewer Q&A. I also prefer it's 'commentaryless' coverage of most events to the slanted version of the talking heads. I enjoy the Book Notes program also.

Watching the US Senate or House can be worse than watching paint dry and the British Parliament is a riot to watch but, hey, that's democracy at work, slow, deliberate, raucous at times but steadfast in it's mission.

Protestors? Free speech is a blessed thing, eh? Many have died to give them the right whether they are right or wrong! :)

(If this post is too political, let me know and I will be happy to delete it.)

ah, can't comment on that. We only get CNN International, which bores me silly. Fox News is jaw-dropingly shocking though.

How did i know a thread about CSPAN on this site would turn into a thread about every channel except CSPAN? Hmmm...

But you really can't have a thread like this and NOT talk about politics since all CSPAN does is cover politics.

It'd be like asking who watches ESPN on a board that has a policy of no sports talk.

I watch it, CSPAN, and i'll leave it at that, considering this thread will eventually be closed.

Ahh, Grasshopper, we meet again. . .

The right has there Fox news,

The left has ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC (insert King and I Soundtrack - etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. . .)

I do watch some C-Span on occasion. I like the British stuff and some other things are entertaining. I think one of the funniest signs I saw at one of the protests, was held by a group of young ladies - Trim Off the Bush. Kinda catchy, heh?
