This has been discussed in depth a few times on this board. The hat is staying. They had to pour a ton of concrete just to support the hat. The Great movie ride and the theater are probably gonna go, because they are getting rid of the MGM license. Therefore, the hat will be centrally located in the park and will become the new icon. It will not move, and it's location will take away from the chinese theater disappearing.

The thing about dropping the MGM name and getting rid of the theatre are 100% rumor though. There has been talk of it for like the last 5 years. I remember people talking about how the merchandise was no longer going to say MGM on it like two years ago and it still hasn't changed...

The Hat will stay I think. Because why would the yspend the money just to take it down later? And I think They may take the MGM away this hat might be the beginning of it.

My question is, what does the hat have to do with this park in any way shape or form? In fact, having it there sort of ruins the view from the entrance. You look down the street to see a big hat?

The hat is from Fantasia which was a huge step in animation back then. It was made in the 1950's so it does fit in withthe 40-50's time period. The Sorcerer's hat has a lot to do with movies, and disney.

Yes, I know what it's from originally but it still doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. It completely disrupts the back lot look of this area and it was a part of an animated feature so something like that would be better suited on a smaller scale near the animation building. In all seriousness though, that can't be their excuse for using it. The Sorcerer Mickey look has been expanded so far beyond his original role on Fantasia that it's almost it's own thing. I would bet a good sum that if you walked up to the average guest in Epcot while looking at the wand over spaceship earth and asked them where the Sorcerer Mickey first appeared, most wouldn't be able to tell you. Some might agree after you mention Fantasia but I don't think most would make the connection in their mind on their own. This simple fact that his arm is there next to spaceship earth shows how far they've taken the concept of him from the movie...

I'm sure it's orignial idea was for the 100 years...100 years of "magic". So it fits there. Plus the studios has really needed a icon that is unique do disney. The chinese theater was just a borrowed image.

But i guess some people still won't be happy, no matter what you do.

For the 100 years, I think the hat is fine but for the studios overall, I think they could have come up with something more appropriate. I mean, they use the water tower which makes sense. They could have put a giant clapper in there (not that I want to see that happen). Really there are a lot of other things besides a giant sorcerer's hat that would have better suited that park, that's all I'm saying. I mean, MK has Cinderella's castle which reminds us of the charm and magic that park holds; Epcot has Spaceship Earth which is a modern artistic representation of earth which helps cover both the future world and world showcase areas; Animal Kingdom has the tree of life - showing natural life both through plants and animals and now MGM has a big Sorcerer's hat which ties into the theme of that park by… ?

Well, I think it rerminds us of classic disney movie moments, like the Sorceror's Apprentice in Fantasia. Fantasia was a very big movie in movie history. I think it ties to the park, not as much as earful tower, but in it's own special way, and I like it being the park's icon (just not in front of the Chinese Theater).

Goofster, I've been to Disney recently (okay, two trips in the past month) and I have to say that when I saw the hat in person, it detracted from the Hollywood Blvd theming that they worked so hard on. And after Sorcery in the Sky fireworks and Fantasmic, this icon doesn't say "Studios" to me.... it links to too many other things. I'm not ticked off about the hat, it'll do, but the location is truly horrendous. I'm with MrPromey on this--the hat is not their best work. :(

Speaking of the hat, I have some new pictures from my visit today that I'll be posting tonight. I even have a few shots inside the wall… Check the picture board….

BTW, I'm not exactly saying that I don't like the hat. I just don't agree that it's a good symbol for MGM…. Of all the Disney Icons that they could have used to represent movies, it seems strange that they would use one that is so far detached from the movie that it originally came from...

Mighty, what are you talking about?

You said you don't go every week...and that people who spend two weeks there a year spend more time in the parks than you do... and you are a fibberpants!

A silly little word that Mightyduck has chose to use that probably sounds a lot cuter than it looks.. A person that fibs - a person that lies about something that isn't too serious...
