My first time in Disney I went there and all I remember is swinging on some kind of rope or pole and my bathing suit top falling off! LOL :ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

Ahh, I went on my first visit and the next time I went it was closed! Being a somewhat naive america-lovin' brit, i loved it because it reminded me of creeks you'd see in old movies. I think ill miss it on my next trip, but i'm yet to see typhoon lagoon so that should make up for it =)

I used to go to River Country all the time.Back then that was all we had so useing the lake water was no big deal. Now when you think of useing Bay lake to swim in :hurl:.Sad to see it in its current state

Well it's no different than staying in a state park or something and swimming in the lake.. That was the point.. Then Bay Lake became contaminated, RC closed, and signs went up all along the beach at FW saying bacteria levels in the water were too high to safely swim in... Lake water is fine, and Bay Lake used to be, but no more..

Very interesting information and discussions, its fun to learn about something that was at Disney in the past. Does anyone have any pictures that they can post of them at River Country?

Fish in the water?

We used to camp at FW and go to river country all the time. I can remember the inner tube ride(last hill was the best) and the zip line(was it more like a trapeze?) I was little and terrified of all the fish. the water was murky and smelly, but I had never been to anything like it before, so it was GREAT!!!!!!

I remember (and one of the above sites pics agrees) the water was not the crystal clear in blue painted basins like the newer two, but there were fish in the water?

I remember it very well; my sister and I went there several times, lots of fun, but a little intimidating for me, I am not a big water bug, but still like to go to the water parks.Very rustic and was perfic for the spot they had it in, I actually have a Goofy River Country Towel, it is still my favorite to this day!

We've traveled via boat from Wilderness Lodge to Fort Wilderness a few times now and we always ask our boat captain to tell us about River Country and Discovery Island(both extict now). I've always heard about the Fl Laws, and since Disney had opened the bigger water parks, it was RC that went bye-bye. Ask about Discovery Island, it is also interesting.

Loved it...It for sure doesn't compare to TL and BB...It was "river country" you had the option to swim in the lake or in the pool area..I liked the water slide that had a 5ft drop were there wasn't anymore slide to it..

I remember it vaguely, we went a couple times when I was little, then my mom caught a really strange disease from the water and we never went back, lol... really strange, only about 10 people in the US had ever been diagnosed with it, and it took them forever to diagnose what it was...

Your memory is playing tricks on you. There were no fish in the water at River Country and the water was not "murky and smelly". They used a chemical that was similar to chlorine in which fish would not survive. But it killed germs, algae, etc just like chlorine does. The reason they used it instead of chlorine was specifically because if they'd used chorline then River Country would have looked like a public swimming pool. They wanted it to look like a natural "watering hole".

Thank you for removing it.

I'm not sure, though, that it was necessary to use another synonomous word just for the purpose of describing for everyone what the original word was. That sort of defeats the purpose. All you have to do is remove it. You don't need to go into detail to explain to everyone, "Hey everybody, here's what the original word was by the way."
