See is a relative term. You can actually "see" a shuttle launch from almost anywhere in the state of Florida. To really experience a shuttle launch I highly recommend getting much closer. The difference is mind blowing.

Old news here there have been a lot of threads about this.I saw one take off from the Poly beach back in the 80s,I will never forget it .We seem to miss one everytime we are in WDW.

I was back in our room for a "nap" and ended up waking up and hearing commotion outside our door. I opened it to see what was going on and the people waved frantic to come and take a look. I was in my long flannel night gown so was a little hesitant, but saw the shuttle (more like a bright light) in the sky. I ran back to get my dh and he saw it too. Whenever we've been there, we've never known of one taking off. Dh has told me though that if there ever was one and we didn't have a car, we were renting on and going over for the day to see it!

We were lucky enough to see the shuttle launch in May - ironically enough it takes off over Tomorrowland

I saw the shuttle launch in March from atop the Contemporary. It was the first launch I've ever seen and I don't care if it's the last. It was so amazing I don't want to replace that experience. Plus, it was the last ever night launch.

It is worth the drive out to see it! Watched one at 2AM once.

Amazing to be close to it, the youtube videos from WDW are nice, but
not the same as being there.

The only caveat is, the traffic after the launch on the way back is awful.
What is normally a one hour trip turns into a 3-4 hour crawl. For my
money, and as tired as I was, it was still completely worth it.

Seeing a shuttle launch was on my bucket list. I was suppose to see it a few years back but they delayed the launch and I was already on my way home when it actually did launch.

Oh I am sure the videos look great but to be there and to hear the sonic boom and have that make your heart stop and shake you to the core cannot even replace the effects of a video.

Oh and the drive back home took I am sure nuts.

talk about lucky

I was riding Splash Mountain at night - always beautiful for the outside view - and it was perfectly timed such that just as we rounded the bend to reveal the view over Tomorrowland, we saw the shuttle going up - it was beautiful!

Never seen a launch - heard the sonic boom as it prepared to land over EPCOT Center in 1993 though.

Looks like I`ll never see one launch now :(

Fortunate to have seen two launches while in Orlando

Our first was on the second day of our first ever trip in 94 - didn't know anything about it until we landed at Orlando Int when the captain announced iy as we were ready to get off the plane, We woke early the next morning and saw the plumes of smoke over to the east as dawn was breaking.

Our second was in 03 when we watched it take off as we were transferring onto the trams on The Backlot Tour - this delayed the ride ever so slightly.

There is actually a night launch scheduled for early next Tuesday morning (1:36AM). I thought they said no more night launches but it looks like with all the delays on the last one they ended up with a different schedule than was originally planned.

I wasn't able to get tickets to be on the Space Center proper (they were gone in less than 5 minutes) but I'm still planning on heading over to one of the causeways south of the space center to see it if it stays on schedule. I'm trying to figure out how early I need to get there for a launch at this time of day.

I watched one from my planned location about 15 years ago and you can see the launch pad from the location but it's about 14 miles away.

Seeing it from the Orlando area is very much be dependent on weather and cloud cover. As long as the skies are clear you can see it from pretty much anywhere with a good open view to the east.

As for the sonic boom that's been mentioned earlier, that only happens on the return and the return path will determine whether you might hear that at WDW. Sometimes they come in out of the north, other times up along the eastern florida coast and don't pass over Orlando so we don't hear it. Other times it will come right across the area and we hear both of them.

Plus, it was the last ever night launch.

Unless my math is wrong, the next launch in a few days is a night launch. Albeit it will be long after the parks close, but if it isn't too cloudy that night and you are still awake, you should be able to see it.
