Any update on Flamingo Crossings?

Yes
The infrastructure is there and there was something quite a while ago about Walgreens signing on, but no construction as of yet. However, I have heard they are building a new Reedy Creek firestation out that way. Why? I don't know, but that's what I'm told.

Supposedly, they have deals in place with Walgreen's as well as 2-3 hotel operators (think Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites, Comfort Suites) yet I find that hard to believe because I've heard this for most of 2012 and nothing is happening. Those places go up practically overnight.

The only thing of interest going on there right now is street racing. We made the mistake of going home that way last Saturday night after the Wine & Dine Half (around 3am) and they were all lined up on Hartzog/Flamingo Crossings Blvd - the road that leads in from Avalon. Very interesting experience, and I'm sure it's not quite what Disney had in mind for that area...

That might explain the need for Reedy Creek to build a fire station out that way. The hotels that would go out there have to have insurance and no one would insure it without adequate fire fighting facilities nearby.

Still, got to wonder why any hotel company would build brand new hotel rooms out there. Construction costs would require nightly rates north of $100/night and then they'd have to compete with closer-located Disney budget category hotels that charge less.

This is a project that really needs to die, it has no purpose. and the layout is ridiculous.

It's advertised as pedestrian friendly, but its totally not.. its just a typical run of the mill strip center that were popping up like hot cakes back in the mid 2000's.

Plus theres simply nothing out west, everyone wants to stay more on the east side of disney especially if they intend to go to attractions other than disney.

I think Disney's efforts are all focused on Disney Springs and getting vendors in there right now. If not, they should be.
And, with that going on, why would any developer/business want to go in there when Disney Springs is where everything is going for the near term?
Also, I read somewhere that some of the ideas they had for Flamingo Crossing have been rolled into Disney Springs, so it sounds like they have scrapped it for now.

Imagine, though. A Hilton Garden Inn provides services similar to a Disney moderate. For cheaper than a Disney value. And it's "on site." Is Disney sure they want these built? I would be afraid (if I were them) of it leaching away from Disney's own bookings.

That's already reality. The hotels at Downtown Disney are running specials right now starting as low as $69 per night.
The difference however (as far as Disney is concerned), is the experience that Disney offers in one of their hotels, plus transportation and other so-called perks. Personally, I'm not sure if that "experience" is always worth the extra price, but I must admit that I do like being close to everything and having the transportation and other conveniences they offer.

A project where Disney was going to play the role of strip mall developer. Disney would retain control and ownership, but not brand it as "officially" part of Walt Disney World.
It's a long term development project, much like how monorail expansion and fifth and six gates are, but this may happen before those do.
