I'm looking for a small place to eat for lunch that will hold us over until our big meal at the biergarten later that night. Id usually pick Sci Fi Drive In but we already are going to to that on another day .. any other ideas for a quick meal in MGM?

The ABC Commissary isn't bad, and although it isn't counter service, Mama Melrose's is good.
While I agree Melrose's is pretty good, I personally have had some terrible experiences with the Commissary.

When looking for a quick bite at the studios, we head to either the Backlot Express (pretty good burgers, sandwiches, and chicken) or to the recently re-opened Studio Catering Co. (Great wraps!) or finally, Pizza Planet (which has pretty good pizza, but not much else to choose from.)

If you are looking for places to eat during your trip I highly reccomend this website: allearsnet.com ...It contains a very thorough list of pretty much every eatery in WDW, I find it very useful when trying to plan meals and hope it is of some help in your trip planning as well!

It really depends on what you want. I really kind of like the ABC Commissary because it is a little 'out of the ordinary' for park food. Pizza planet is good if you are traveling with kids.

We usually don;t do counter service at DS because I have to have my 50's Prime Time and SciFi Dine-In fix

My family is the same way... those are some of our favorite restaurants on property. We rarely spend an entire day at the Studios without eating at at least one of those.

Me three! The only reason why I still visit MGM is for those restaurants and Fantasmic! When I read the OP's question, I couldn't think of any off hand!

Backlot

Backlot all the way for me....I have not ate at alot of the places in MGM I have been to The Backlot Express 2 times in our last 2 trips. There is a place on the side where there is not alot of traffic and last time we seen some of the indy crew on top of a building edge falling on to a bag or somthing we could not see what but about 3 of them kept doing it over and over untill we left.

In addition to the two I mentioned earlier, there are a few places over by ToT, if you don't mind eating outside. I had a hotdog, as a snack at one of the joints. It wasn't all that great, but I'm sure they have better things.

There is aplace back by the Lights Motors Action stunt show that has Meditteranean inspired cusine. I had gotten the kid's meal of grilled chicken and yellow rice which came with sliced apples and a caramel dipping sauce plus a child's size drink!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont eat a great amount in the counter service areas as I also need my 50's Prime Time Fix!!!!!!!!! THAT is the best place in MGM Studios to eat!!!! Belle

MGM is my 2nd favorite park for resturants (Epcot has to be number 1) and the Backlot Express and ABC Commissary are two reasons why. I wouldn't miss the 50's Prime Time Cafe and the Brown Derby for the world, but these two counter service resturants are always great places to go for a lighter meal or just to get out of the heat. Both can get quite crowded at peak times, but it seems that the Backlot Express usually is less crowded. I wish Pizza Planet would take over the whole arcade area because there really isn't a whole lot of room there now. That could also allow them to expand their menu a little bit.

Three meals in ABC Commisary, three disgusting nasty unedible crap. Don't go there. I know I'm not the only one who's had old, stale, cold and undercooked food from them. From burgers to chicken nuggets to fries - all of it's been bad. (And MGM's burgers are nasty compared to MK's and Epcot's in general. They also lack topping bars and CHARGE you over a buck for a cup of cheese sauce you get for free at the topping bars.)

Nasty. :hurl: :hurl: :hurl: :hurl:

Suppose you can never be sure.... I have had a couple favorable experiences at the ABC Commissary for "Counter Service" but I hear the other input.

In MGM I always make it a point to stop in to see "Mom" and "My Cousins" at 50's Prime Time... "Elbows off the table", "eating my veggies" and enjoying a rendition of "I'm a little Tea Pot". The only down sird to this is it's not a "counter service" solution as you are asking for.

I have had some very good dining experiences at the ABC commissary. Last time I was at the Studios, in May, while waiting for Lights, Motors, Action we ate at a counter service place that was serving mediterranean food. It was very good. I am going to make it point to get back there again. It is back near the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. I don't remember the name and honestly I don't remember it being there before my last trip in May, so it must be fairly new (considering I go 4-5 times a year).

Enjoy your dining.

That would be the Studio Catering Co. -It just recently re-opened from a rather long closure/overdue rehab with this new Mediterranean menu. I agree, the wraps are delicious! :slurp:
