Despite the reviews, I quite enjoyed this movie. For the first time in a while, I went in having avoided spoilers and I think the reviews lowered my expectations. IMHO, definitely not the best MCU movie and not the worst.

I had seen it on Thursday night, like I do most MCU films, I liked it over all. Slow in some parts, but overall good story that sets up the rest of Phase 5.

MCU fans who are invested in the overall story of Phase 4, 5, and 6 are propping up these films, and it shows when compared to critic scores. Which indicates the MCU has a lot more fans than what most critics like to admit.

For me (and it appears many fans) its full speed ahead to Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

"Disney’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” buzzed to $120 million at the domestic box office, beating expectations and scoring by far the biggest opening weekend in the pint-sized Marvel trilogy.

The superhero adventure, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the titular heroes, brought in $105 million from 4,345 North American theaters over the traditional weekend and finished the President’s Day holiday frame with $120 million. It’s the first $100 million domestic debut of 2023. The film added $121 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $225 million. “Quantumania” failed to live up to expectations in China, sputtering with $19.2 million.

“’Ant-Man’ is the first new Hollywood blockbuster out of the gate in 2023,” says Imax’s CEO Rich Gelfond, noting that $24 million came from the company’s premium-format screens."

All you can hope is that an IP grows as more films come out. Good for Ant-Man having its best debut yet.

Everyone I know who's seen it really liked it a lot. What is going to help this movie in the long run is the fact that it has the signature villain in the next Avengers movie and MCU fans already know that. So, while it may not have great reviews, it's already seen as a must-see prerequisite for Avengers: Kang Dynasty. It has an automatic built in interest. AND, on top of that, it has a built-in connection between the Loki seasons that has already gotten high praise.

So the movie can be the way it is but have the luxury of giving the necessary background on Kang moving forward.

Question regarding China - do Disney+ shows get streamed there on any format? I realized that they would not have been able to see Loki and thus wouldn’t be introduced to that first variant of Kang.

D+ is not available in main land China, but it is available in Hong Kong. So I guess it would depend on if a majority of Chinese MCU moviegoers come from the main land or from Hong Kong on whether they know Kang prior to Quantumania.

I don't believe they break out which region in China they come from, so we may never know.

Right, I know D+ is not available in mainland China. My question was if Disney licenses (any of) their shows to another streamer in China? More specifically, would someone in China have been able to legally watch Loki somewhere or would that not have been possible?

I know other streamers that are only in the US or in limited countries do license some originals to Netflix, Prime, etc to broadcast in countries the original streamer isn’t in.

Just looked up an article on this and it was clear China missed the Phase 4 TV shows, as well as the movies. So, presumably, they weren't licensed to other outlets in China.

But we can presume they were dutifully pirated.

After the 3-day weekend (in the U.S.), Quantumania is 53% of the way to theatrical profitability.

I'd hope it would release in Hong Kong as they are they have the only park with an Ant-Man ride.

Disney has had a relationship with Tencent, one of China's biggest streamers to distribute some Disney content but not all. In 2022 they expanded that relationship to include Marvel content, not sure if it included the D+ shows or just the MCU films.

“Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is facing stormy times at the weekend box office, where it could tumble 71.6 percent to $30 million-plus in its sophomore outing.

If these projections are right, the superhero pic is in danger of suffering the worst second-weekend decline ever for a Hollywood superhero pic opening to $100 million or more at the domestic box office, and one of the of worst for any such movie.

No superhero films that are members of this club have fallen 70 percent or more; DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes the closest at 69.1 percent. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, last year’s Thor: Love and Thunder saw the biggest decline, or 67.7 percent. And among any film starting off with $100 million or more, the final Harry Potter pic, released in 2011, tops the list of biggest second-weekend drops with a decline of 72 percent, according to Comscore.

Ant-Man 3 opened to $120 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend, including a franchise-best $105.5 million for the three days (the three-day number is used as the official comparison going forward). But poor word of mouth is clearly hurting the movie, along with competition from new offering Cocaine Bear, which is stealing away younger adults (and especially males). A historic storm on the West Coast also isn’t helping matters.”

I wonder if they will revise their long term plans… I would not be surprised if the multiverse storylines may be too out there for general audiences. Although I have heard Antman is not great. I have not seen it yet… I had covid last weekend… I will see for myself tomorrow

The qualifier “franchise-best” is beside the point. Compared to other Marvel titles it’s a weak number. The previous Dr Strange and Black Panther movies opened last year to $180m. Suspect that Guardians 3 will be the Marvel checkout point for a lot of general moviegoers.

I can admit, Ant-Man is one of those IPs that I don’t feel compelled to see in a theatre…

GOTG:3, I’ll be there 100%. Ant-Man? Ehh… no rush.

Just got home from seeing Quantumania. I thought it was great! Good pacing, fun, great transition to phase 5.

I tried to avoid spoilers, but some of the reviews I read didn’t line up with what I saw:
  • Wasp was in the entire film and played a key, if quieter role.
  • There was some exposition, but that was necessary to explain the quantum realm, the multiverse, and variant timelines. I thought they took some very complex concepts and made them relatively easy to follow.
  • Scott Lang is a great everyman Avenger-no real powers, not a super genius. Basically a good guy who gets by on thieving and dumb luck.
  • CG wasn’t terrible, as some have complained. A couple obvious “greenscreen” shots and TONS of animation, but come on, this film took place almost entirely in an alternate universe. And for once, they actually made it into a “world” complete with beings, cultures, and societies. To me, most of the “aliens” looked better than what we’ve seen in GotG.
  • Jonathan Majors is a FANTASTIC actor, and brilliant as Kang. I cannot wait to see more of him in future films.

"Disney’s Marvel is trying to track down the identity of the person (or people) who allegedly released a 63-page transcript of dialogue from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” online — one month before the film’s theatrical premiere.

A request filed Friday (March 10) on behalf of Marvel in federal district court in California asked the court to issue a subpoena to compel Reddit to identify the person or group responsible for sharing dialogue from “Quantumania” to the r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers subreddit “on or about” Jan. 20, 2023. The film, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors, opened wide in the U.S. on Feb. 17.

Marvel requested “all Identifying Information for the user ‘u/MSSmods'” as well as that of “any other user(s) responsible for posting, editing, and/or maintaining the content” that was available on the subreddit (but is no longer) for the period from Jan. 15-Feb. 15. The Marvel subpoena request was filed pursuant to the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Asked for comment, a Reddit spokesperson declined to say if the company intended to comply with the information requested by Marvel. “Reddit is committed to protecting our users’ privacy. We have rigorous processes in place to assess legal requests and object when appropriate,” the rep said.

Marvel also filed a DMCA subpoena requesting similar info from Google, after someone allegedly shared the document to Google Docs. Reps for Marvel and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Marvel had previously issued DMCA takedown requests to Reddit and Google seeking to remove the copyright-infringing material."
