It can happen.
Very true. I love some of those movies. 1941 is just sooo bad it's good. Universal Studios Hollywood used to use 1941's Ferris wheel as an example of a practical effect.

Ant man 2 was good. Ant Man 3, not so much.

I thought Quantumania was way better than Ant-Man and the Wasp. AM&TW was, to me, a big disappointment after how great the first movie was. There was nothing particularly wrong with AM&TW but it just wasn't all that enthralling.

Meanwhile, Quantumania (along with Love and Thunder) is a film I greatly enjoyed and don't understand the negative feedback and box office drops. Seems just as good as a "typical" Marvel film from Phase 2 or 3. 🤷‍♂️

I would have probably held out for another month and put it on D+ in June at the earliest. I still think 3 months is a little too soon to shift to streaming if they want to encourage people to go to theaters - the longer the gap, the more apt people might be to go to the movies and even to see something more than once.

Not that it matters for this film as its run is over, but I think the timeframes used now will impact theater behavior in the future.

Doesn't really seem to be hurting Universal too much with their 17, 31, and 45 day windows before going digital purchase/rental and then to streaming on Peacock and other services.

This is why you're seeing Disney start to switch to the staggered approach also, of digital purchase/rental first then streaming on D+ a month or so later. They did it with Avatar and now Quantumania.

Everyone is watching everyone else in Hollywood, so if something works for one studio other studios are going to try the same thing.

Three months doesn't seem to be hurting theatrical releases. If people want to see a movie right away or on the big screen specifically, they will. Avengers Endgame was three months between theatrical and digital releases.

Maybe smaller movies are more impacted?

I personally think that a big part of the problem is when a movie has people on the fence. If a movie is getting bad reviews, bad press, there's some sort of controversy... People might choose to wait because in a month it will be streaming. I know I have skipped more than a few Disney releases for that very reason. Maybe that's just me, but I doubt it.

Disney has a mediocrity problem. The majority of what they've been pushing out has been mediocre at best for a lot of people. And that's reflected in the boxoffice. Hopefully they get back to focusing on telling a good story first.

That's a good point.

Little room for error.

If an Ant-Man is reviewed as a 6 out of 10 for example, I might still see it because it's going to be moderately entertaining IF the theater is the only option.

Now, with short home video windows, I have TWO reasons not to see the movie. Bad reviews AND a lack of waiting.

Stupid stupid move.

By not releasing this to Disney+ this week, it guarantees I'm not going back to theaters.

I was finally motivated to go catch GOTG3 in theaters (which would be the first new film I'd have seen on the big screen since pre-pandemic). But not now since I can't get caught up and see Quantumania first.

So it's D+ permanently for me now (in binge and churn mode) for all new movies since I'm stuck one film behind and GOTG3 was the one that was going to motivate me back into theaters. Oh well...

So only right now you will go back to the movies instead of when the movie was released? I think Disney will survive without your $12.

I wasn't paying $25 (the current cost of a ticket near me) to see a really poorly received film that was one of my least fave parts of the MCU and doesn't even contain my fave character in those films (Luis).

But if I could have caught up on it on D+ this week, I'd've gone opening weekend to GOTG3 and expected from that point to go back permanently to my habit of seeing Marvel films in theaters opening weekend like I used to do. But now I'm behind, so no matter how hard I try to avoid it, I'll get spoilered, so that seals it for me - if I can't catch up in time for the movie I care most about; I accept that I'm not going back for movies I care less about.

And the box office on virtually all Marvel films post-Endgame (other than Spidey) says I'm not alone in this, so it's not just my $25 for every Marvel film (plus repeat visits). It's others who say "you know what, I'm fine not going back to theaters. I don't feel the urgency or enjoyment or entertainment anymore." Disney will survive without my money. But not as more of their fans continue to tap out.

Pretty sure Quantumania is still in theaters - you could make it a day and see them both? But I do get your point.
