Isn't that what they do now? Retire the male superhero for a new female superhero?

Many of the male actors are finished with their contracts and instead of replacing them with another guy Marvel is pulling from their comics and having a female step in the role. It's ok, women can fight the mean ol' bad guys too.

The Avengers: 5 men, 1 woman (already more male-centric as opposed to the general population)

Man replaced by a female:
  • Ironman > Ironheart
  • Hawkeye > Kate Bishop Hawkeye
Woman replaced by a female
  • Natasha > Yelena
Man replaced by a man
  • Capt. America > Sam Wilson
Replacement Unsure:
  • Hulk > She-Hulk or son, Skaar
  • Thor > Lady Thor resurrected?

Extended Avengers

Man replaced by a female
  • T'Challa > Shuri
  • Scott Ant-Man > Stature
Female replaced by a man
  • Wanda > Wiccan
Female replaced by Female
  • Janet Wasp > Hope Wasp
  • Capt. Marvel > Ms. Marvel and/or Photon
Man replaced by a man
  • Vision > White Vision
  • Pietro > Speed
  • Hank Ant-Man > Scott Ant-Man
  • Groot > Groot
Replacement Unsure
  • Loki > Sylvie or Young Loki

So, all in all, I don't see the pattern you think you're seeing.

I thought that trailer was awful. Ant-Man films were the light, bright spots in the MCU. They were the palate-cleansers among the fighting and more serious themes. This was dark, depressing and made Scott just look stupid as hell. "Hi, I'm the devil, let's make a deal!" (I mean, even that could've worked in light Ant-Man way - but this... was not it.)

And I took a closer look at the purely AWFUL bobblehead photoshop on the poster and I'm like WHO IS RUNNING THE MARKETING HERE?!?! Please stop it. Now.

Ant Man films were also throw aways for the most part. Fun, better than I expected, but they weren't THE movies to set up the franchise. This is. I don't think you can go for a light, funny tone when you are setting up the BIG bad guy for the next 2 phases of your franchise. They either couldn't follow this storyline, or they had to give this film a more serious tone.

So looking at the trailer, Ant-man isn't going to survive. Kind of like the feeling we get for Guardians that Rocket and maybe others aren't going to survive.

I am expecting that to be a misdirect which Marvel is famous for… I would think that would be too much of a spoiler

Hunh.

I never knew that Ant-Man was only allowed to be one-note and one-genre.
Hunh.

I never knew an opinion was only allowed to be one-note and one-genre.

For the record, I also don't want to see GOTG 3 go serious either. The point of different flavors is they don't all taste the same. And that's a good thing.

They're both Dramedies, not Comedies. And sometimes, with dramedies, you get a very special episode. GotG was a tear jerker at the end.

Otherwise, the sequels are just more of the same and the franchise peters out.

She-Hulk is the only real comedy (as well as the Groot shorts).

Disagree - this is the most hyped for a Marvel film based on the trailer I have been in a while.

I like how they've made Ant-Man progressively more serious (contrasted to Thor going from serious Norse mythos to a gag)

This seems like it will kick Phase 5 off with a bang.

Anything has to be better than Phase 4. That was a low point in the series.

In a surprising turn of events...

Black Panther 2, which originally released elsewhere in November 2022, will set the table on February 7, while Ant-Man 3 will hit Chinese movie theaters on February 17, day-and-date with North America. In so doing, they become the first titles featuring a Marvel character in China since Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019, and the first Disney/Marvel movies since Avengers: Endgame earlier that same year.

Can’t imagine Wakanda Forever doing all that much since it’s probably already been pirated by much of the target audience (understandable in fact since those people probably assumed it wouldn’t come to China anytime soon). But great for Quantumania.

Dunno, MCU movies when released have done pretty well in China for the most part. The first one did $105M, so even if it did half for WF that would be seen as a win.

Sure. But they are usually released same date or soon after release elsewhere. People have had 2 months to pirate the film in China, which I think will limit the potential box office there.

Ant Man 3 should do well though I’d expect.
