Another WDW-er planning a first time Disneyland Trip!

Hi everyone!

I just thought I would post and say "hi" on the Disneyland board! I've been lurking around here for the past couple months, and it's been wonderful to read all the stories about Disneyland and see all the great input that WDW regulars have been getting from the Disneyland regulars as they also plan their first trips.

My family of four is planning a trip to Anaheim in late July. My mom has done the majority of the planning and has us booked to use our DVC points at the Grand Californian (yaaay!). We'll have five days in the parks, which sounds like a great amount of time for newbies to explore and hopefully take our time and soak in the atmosphere. We've been WDW regulars my whole life, with trips to the world every 2-4 years or so since the late 80s.

We've been cautiously planning this Disneyland trip, because unfortunately one of our dogs has cancer, and late July is kind of a critical time as far as her prognosis goes. We had already started planning the trip by the time she was diagnosed in late November. As a family of veterinarians, we take our pets pretty seriously, and my mom especially does not want to take this trip if there is any concern whatsoever that our dog is showing any kinds of decline. I completely understand - we wouldn't have any fun if we spent the whole trip worrying about her.

However, good news is that our dog is doing great after her chemotherapy, and her bloodwork and x-rays have been clear for months now. I don't want to jump the gun, but we're starting to feel a tich more optomistic that she has some good, happy time ahead of her and that maybe we can take the trip to California without having to worry about her too much. If she is still looking good in about a month or so, my mom's going to give the all clear for us to go into full planning mode. I'm starting to allow myself to get a little bit more excited! :)

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to y'all and also thanks for all the advice that I've gained second-hand from reading posts on this board. We were starting to talk about restaruants we would like to try in Disneyland, and this was the first place I went to to start looking into the options and to pick up advice. You guys are great! I'm sure you guys will hear plenty of questions from me if we're able to go into full planning later next month!

Welcome to the Disneyland Family forum.;)

I had a cocker spaniel that I had to put down last year. He had gotten hit by a car and the next day I took him to the vet. The vet told me he had a broken jaw and a dislocated hip, which I could already tell just by looking at him. The thing that shocked me was the vet found a tumor and my dog had cancer and he had it for at least a year, and we had no idea. I was so stunned and shocked that I lifer the room. It completely broke my heart. I cried uncontrollably for two days straight. Thank God you guys are vets and are able to take care of your pets when they are in serious need!

I hope everything works out and we can start helping you plan here! Feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

Sorry to read about your dog. Bummer. :(

Thanks for the kind welcomes from everyone. I'm very excited! :D

Raven, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It's amazing what fantastic friends and family members our pets can be. While that's what makes them so wonderful, it's also what makes it so heart-breakingly difficult when something happens to them. :(

So the trip still isn't 100% yet, but we're moving forward on planning a little bit since our dog is continuing to do well! Multiple reasons to be happy! I'm letting myself get a little more excited...

Anyway, reason I'm posting is because my mom just let me know that she had moved forward and made some dining reservations for us! We have lunch reservations for Blue Bayou our first day, dinner reservations for Napa Rose in the middle of the trip, and Carthay Circle for dinner on our last day. My mom and I had talked about some of the dining options after reading through some posts on here and some other sites...I'm pretty darn excited about the choices she made!

Thanks for all the kind comments from everyone. Here's hoping the trip happens and I can share more planning with you all! :)

I'll have to figure out how to post a pic of my dog up here as well...she lost a bunch of fur after her chemo (which is actually not a very common chemo side effect in dogs), but now it's growing back in golden (her face had turned white as she aged), so she looks younger than ever! It's pretty cool and I'm so happy we are getting this time with her! :D

I use my Google+ account, put the picture in there first, and place it on here. Once it's on a webpage, you can copy and paste.

I've lost two cats (not a dog person!) my first cat who my parents had when I was born and my tabby. The first cat died because he was 16 and most likely had cancer, and the second one died at ten from kidney failure. :( My current cat is the cat I've been closest to, and if something were to happen to her, I'd be a total mess. Thankfully I took her to the vet a few weeks ago and the vet said she's in great health. Best wishes to your dog and all that you do for animals.

First let me say as a doggy mama, my thoughts and prayers to your furbaby and family! My dogs are my world. DH and I don't have human kids yet, but furry ones - we've got two :)

Second, you're going to love Blue Bayou. It's delicious! It's been two years since I've visited DL and I was only there for a very brief amount of time for a travel agent training, but I actually cancelled WDW plans in September so DH and I can visit DL in October :) I miss it so much and I have a feeling Disneyland Park could possible become my favorite Disney park after our vacation.

Enjoy your trip, take lots of photos and give that puppy lots of hugs! I hope she continues to have success with her treatments!

So unfortunately we've had a bad turn...our dog was just a little off earlier this week, and her bloodwork showed her to be anemic. I brought her to my clinic where we have some specialists including an internist who can do ultrasound and some oncologists. Her ultrasound showed some pretty severe cancerous masses in her liver that were new since the time of her surgery back in November. Some of them are bleeding, causing her anemia. We're worried that time is short for our little girl. I know people have to experience this with their human families all the time, but in the pet world too, cancer is such a terrible thing.

The good news is that Mina doesn't know she's sick, she's still happy, eating, and wants to play. We're just going to take things day by day at this point. If we're lucky and she's still with us at the end of July, we're definitely going to make sure we're with her and not leave her behind to go to California.

You all have been so AMAZING and supportive, you don't know what it means. I know that if the Disneyland trip doesn't happen this summer, it's going to definitely happen in the future some day, and I'm still excited about it. I can't wait to continue picking up great information here and share my plans in the future with all of you! :)

Hey everyone,

I just thought I would post a quick update and let you guys know that we lost our sweet Mina on Saturday. We all got to be with her and I think she was not suffering at the end - this really meant the world to us.

Since this is a Disneyland forum, I didn't want this post to spiral too much into a personal one about our dog, but you all have been so kind and incredibly supportive I also wanted to give you an update. You all show so clearly why this board is a special place.

Best wishes, and I'm looking forward to sharing our upcoming Disneyland trip with you guys. Lots of questions will be coming as planning begins!

Tuffy, I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a loved furry family member is so difficult.

Happy planning!

I'm VERY sorry to hear about your loss. No more pain and suffering, which is a good thing, but it's hard losing a pet because they are just as much a family member as your parents or a spouse, etc. Malina is now with my Jax in doggy heaven, having a great time!

Please don't hesitate to ask questions about your trip. We're happy to help.
