Another LONG Birthday, Dining and Pictures Trip Report 4/29-5/6

Well, it’s about time for me to get working on my trip report. I’m sad to be back, and thanks to a work overload, I’ve been tardy on writing this.

As I did last time, I will focus a bit on the food, since for me, and especially DH, Disney is half about the wonderful food! :slurp:

Here we go!

Saturday 4/29

How typical that we should start out our trip with "life imitating art." We were "too excited to sleep", and were up all night. So therefore we did get out to the airport early, and arrived in plenty of time for the security guys to hassle us. :brick:

On the flight down, we set up DH’s laptop and just for fun hooked up his GPS device to see if it would work while we were in mid-air. It did! I was surprised, and would never have even thought of using it if we hadn’t seen it listed in the approved electronic devices list in the plane magazine. After a few seconds of searching for a satellite, we could easily track our progress on our way down, and had a lot of fun picking out large highways on the ground below. It was a little intimidating to know exactly how fast and how high we were flying at each moment ( 637 mph, and 30,800 feet! ) but it was a neat diversion on the way down.

We arrived in Orlando safely, after a thankfully uneventful flight. Off we headed to the Dollar Rental Car desk to pick up our car. I was a bit hesitant about spending a lot of cash on a rental car when you could ride the Disney Busses for free, but DH insisted on getting a car this go-round. Oh, well. It was his birthday trip, and if he wanted to drive, then so be it. We passed by a ginormous line for the Magical Express on our way to the rental counter, and I silently thanked DH for not having to spend much time in that huge line.

We picked up our car, an ugly green Chrysler Pacifica, and head out of the airport with DH’s GPS device telling us where to go. As we’re leaving the airport, DH exclaims that he’s not sure if the car is calibrated correctly. I look over in worry to see that the car thought we were doing 60 on a very sharp turn. It was then that we took a closer look at the dashboard and realized that the entire speedometer was listed only in kilometers! Not even a tiny MPH underneath, just KPH. We also saw that the A/C was listed in Celsius! So the entire trip we were a bit anxious about what was and wasn’t “speeding.” We did see several cops while on the road, and seeing how we never got pulled over, I assume we stayed in an acceptable range of speed. It was still bizarre to see a car in all metric!

Day 3

Monday, 5/1

We got another late start today, as once again, work interfered. We made it to MGM by around 10:45, and had just enough time to squeeze in one ride on the RnRC before meeting Bonny, MJ and Andrew at the Prime Time Café for lunch. Our server, Liz, was great, and chastised Andrew for needing refills on his soda, telling him that she’d break out the plastic sheets for that night. We retaliated by shooting the paper straw wrappers all over the place – even MJ got in on the fun, hitting me square in the chest once. That kid has some good aim!

I had the meatloaf platter, while DH had the fried chicken. I should have had the chicken too. My meatloaf desperately needed more gravy. It was really on the dry side, and I did need a lot of refills of soda to wash it all down. (not at all like Mom makes, I guess I'm spoiled) The fried chicken was excellent, however, and after snagging a bit of his I really regretted not ordering that too.

DH got a birthday cupcake as a surprise after we ate! The whole room joined in singing him a happy birthday. It was a neat celebration, and I’m glad we had such nice people to share it with. It wouldn’t have been nearly as fun with just the two of us.

From lunch we wandered up to the Streets of America, and had a meeting with the Power Rangers and their deafening ranger mobile. I had a splitting headache within seconds of their arrival. :brick: After meeting and greeting the Power Rangers, we strolled back down towards the BatB show.

All of us waiting for the show to start

After the show we headed over for double rides on the RnRC, and ToT. Then it was just about time for the Stars and Motorcars Parade. We got to see the new additions, Lightning and Mater, drive by as the grand “Car-shalls” of the parade. They were cute, but not much recognition was given to them by the crowd. Too new, I guess.

The parade was nice, but I think I'll be glad if anything comes of the rumored Pixar replacement.

With plans to meet up in the evening, we said goodbye to Bonny and company, and headed off to the Concourse Steakhouse for our dinner reservations. We were seated at a nice table that looked like it had seen many better days. We were about 3 tables removed from the thin divider between the Steakhouse and Chef Mickey’s. Our server was pleasant and she explained that we could get a smoothie on the Dining Plan. Yum. Both of us had the Steakhouse Smoothie – strawberry and banana.

While we waited for our meals to arrive we watched the kids at the table right next to the divide for Chef Mickey’s. Frequently Goofy, Minnie, and even Mickey himself would thread between the tables. These poor kids wanted so much to be able to interact with the characters, and weren’t able to because of the divide. I think the parents learned their lesson, and will probably book Chef Mickey’s next time. It did seem cruel to have the characters so close, and yet so far away. :( Maybe they should have had a taller divide between the two restaurants, so they wouldn’t be seen as readily.

For our appetizers, I got the pan-seared scallops while DH got the Honey Sesame Chicken Wings. I was a bit disappointed with my scallops. The scallops themselves were well done but the sauce they were served in was flavorless. It tasted a lot like tomato puree. Nothing special. DH’s wings were good, or at least he seemed to enjoy them.

For our main courses we both had the filet mingon. It was good. A nice, solid meal, with surprisingly few frills.

For dessert, their tray looked much less than appetizing. DH ordered the Butterfinger cheesecake, but I saw some kids at a nearby table with this amazing looking sundae, and I asked if I could order it off of the kids menu. I was so happy when it arrived! That brownie was one of the best I’ve had on property! Yummy!

We finished dinner up relatively early, and had some time to take the monorail over to the GF for a walk along the beach. It was so nice, and very romantic. We walked all the way to the Polynesian, and took the boat to the Magic Kingdom. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all to see all those deluxe resorts. Now I’m going to have to save my pennies even more! It seemed so relaxing and part of the magic.

Upon our arrival in the MK, we called to see where Bonny was, and took the train to Frontierland so we wouldn’t have to fight the crowds up and down Main Street to get to them. We met up across from the Hall of Presidents, and hunkered down to wait for the parade. Once it started, It was such a blast to watch them interact with the characters. We yelled and made crocodile arm movements for Captain Hook, taunted Snow White’s Wicked Queen with apples, and crowed for Peter Pan. Making the parade an interactive experience was so much fun! And it made such a difference in the characters, who seemed glad to have something to react to, other than just walking and waving.

A Blurry picture of Peter Pan making a visit with MJ

Once the parade ended, we made our way back to the parking lot just as Wishes started to start. It was a neat ending to the day. We said goodbye to Bonny and MJ, and headed off back to the hotel for the night.
