Do you think they're beating this "princess" thing into the ground just a bit?

Princess & the frog, Tangled, Brave...

We get it, they make decent bank and allow you to push merch on little girls and sappy parents, but please move on already!

princess and the frog was necessary because Disney never had a black princess, i didnt like the concept of tangled. how do we know brave is a princess ?

I welcome the princess movies! I think they are so fun! And add Pixar to that and the fact that the princess is from Scotland? I'm sold!

I personally think Princess and the Frog was born out of the Katrina devastation in New Orleans. The movie brought some hope. Tiana was black because it made sense due to the demographics of the area. They also featured Cajun and French characters, also appropriate for the era and setting. I think the wording of your post could be misconstrued as offensive. Disney does not make movies simply to "check off every race".

Well, one can always not go see it, and then complain about the money wasted if it doesn't make any do anything at the box office....

Which of course, would never happen around here.

Well considering the first animated film ever done by Disney or anyone was a princess, I think it's welcome to continue the tradition............as long as they offer some other nice animated films as well.

Yeah, 9 princesses in 75 years. One every eight years? I can barely keep up.

Angst.

How many disney animated full length features hae been made in the last 75 years? 52 or 53? I am not sure of the exact count, but I am sure princess movies represent less then 20% of the films. Given the amount of reveune they rake in and the fact that the revenue helps fund other projects, you should be more appreciative they have those princesses cash cows to fall back on.

How exciting! Coming from Scottish heritage I can't wait to see this!

I agree. I was being sarcastic.

Nope. Realistically the Disney stables of films spans more than just their animated. We've got Captain Jack back for another adventure and despite them trying to make Elizabeth more than a damsel in distress, it's been a romp for the boys. They just had Buzz and Woody go through theaters and are prepping for Lightning McQueen to hit theaters again.

If you look at the movies in recent times that came from Disney including their live action and the Pixar stable, I've seen it more balanced to the boys. I see boys dressed as Buzz, Woody, Jack, even a couple of Davy Jones. Yet look at the princess category? Many of them haven't had the staying power that the older princesses have had. I didn't see any Tianas even though the buzz for that movie was great and I enjoyed it. I doubt you'll see any Rapunzels or whatever they named her in Tangled. The heavy push on Tinkerbell didn't really translate the same way the adventures for the boys do. Classic Tink is still popular but none of the additional fairy stuff translates like the original.

Disney is trying to create a character that endures and give the girls a reason to head to the theaters and want to play dress up. Remember they own Marvel and while those aren't in the parks, the boys will have Thor, Captain America and still have Iron Man costumes and dress up, games and toys. Next year they'll have Spider-Man amongst The Avengers. What will the girls have?

May not be the animated features some want but I'm glad they are trying to cater to girls so that there is a balance, not to mention that while a lot of purists don't want the superheroes in their parks, they'll welcome a princess with open arms.

They're pushing the princess line too hard and completely ignoring any male interests.

Huge lines of princess merch, movies, costumes, boutiques, character meets, etc...for the daughters.

For the sons?

Uh....hmmm....go ride Space Mountain again boy!

This has been discussed before, but boys don't WANT the types of things the girls want. When they do the pirate version of Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique, whatever its called, its not as successful because typically boys don't play dress up like girls, even if they're dressing up like a pirate. Just because Tangled had a female lead doesn't mean its "for the girls". Its more of an action/adventure in the vein of Aladdin than a romance a la Snow White.

What about the Pirate version of the BBB? Is it still around? Was it popular? What would be the alternative? See boys walking around in Pirate garb, I saw a few Buzz and Woodys on my last trip. I see them playing with the Cars versions of Hot Wheels, they still wear Stitch hats.

While it's not as concentrated as the Princesses for sure, there are still plenty of matches for each of the examples given for the males probably more so.

Look at it from a business standpoint as well, in recent times stuff that could be marketed directly to boys in the animated realm have been flopped.

There's also the problem that you're unofficially not allowed to market to boys any more. Princesses are fine just for the girls, but any time there's something "for the boys" it becomes a feminist issue about how "girls can be cowboys too." Thus, male-driven marketing becomes universal while female-driven marketing stays sacred.

That's a fantastic point. Think about it, if Disney made an animated version of King Arthur for example and they marketed it the same as they did for princesses they'd be nailed hard over and over about how sexist it is and how it would need to be changed especially in this day and age.

I'm a woman and I agree. If a little boy is interested in doing "girl" things it is frowned upon, yet so many people insist girls be included in everything for boys. Sometimes they just need to be little dudes and get time without female influence. It's not opressing anyone or making a statement... it just letting the little boys have something they are not required to share. We have our princess days, let them have their day.

Tangled and PoTF were the two best movies Disney has produced in over a decade, so I don't see why this is something to groan about. Plus Pixar's never had a female protagonist before, so this is still something unique and original.
