Annual State of Disneyland, U.S.A. - A Trip Report by TROR

I just returned from DLR from a stay between June 25- June 29 and offer my somewhat contrarian views.

1. I think Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout is fantastic. To me its way more fun than the original Tower of Terror. I'm not joking. I think the story works, the music is great and I like the energy. It was my favorite experience of the trip and we did it 4 times. I recognize that I may be an outlier on this view.

2. The Frozen Show is a step down from Aladdin. And frankly its too long. I just think one hour is too long to ask little kids to sit still in the dark.

3. Mickey's Philharmagic is a bit of disaster. It doesn't work in the non-surround theater. at all.

4. I think Hyperspace Mountain was awesome. My second favorite experience of the trip. Whoever came up with that idea and figured out a way to work in the effects is a genius to me. Really really well done.

5. I thought Galaxy's Edge was fine. Not great but mostly fine. Smugglers Run was very good (not great) but very good. The area is fine though compared to Harry Potter I thought it was a little lacking in merchandise options. We were not able to get into the Cantina so I can't offer a comment on that.

6. I thought the Incredicoaster re-do was pretty mediocre. Works better at night than during the day. I am not offended by the smaller ride Pixar Re-dos. They don't take up space and give younger kids something to do.

7. The Grand Californian is one of my favorite hotels in the world. Just awesome and so convenient.

8. Grizzly River Rapids is still a great ride to me.

9. Enjoyed doing the Original Soarin Over California ride but I'm ambivalent on the whole California v. World debate. If there is one.

10. I thought the video screen plussing of the Alice In Wonderland Ride was pretty cool and a nice way to update an old attraction.

11. I wish there was a way to make the Matterhorn a less violent experience. It is really really rough.

12. Radiator Springs Racers and the entire Carsland is just perfect to me (and yes, even Mater's Barnyard Whatever and Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters is included in that view).

I rode the right side using single rider line and lucked out and got the front row (never happens with singles!) and I wasn’t preparing for the worst and thought it was pretty smooth. So maybe the right side is smoother? I remember is being rougher last time I rode it, can’t remember which side it was.

I like Aladdin story wise way better than Frozen but I think they are at least equal. I really like the frozen show at DCA.

I can't disagree with anything you said.

I'm not engaged in this story at all. I don't have any emotional connection to any of this and it's not similar enough to anything I do have an emotional connection with. It's not an interesting story, it's not a fun story, and it's not something I care about.

And this is the downfall, not only of GE, but all of the new Star Wars films. Without good characters like Han, Leia and Luke, it's all just empty hardware in empty space. What a shame.

I like Rey and Poe but I definitely wish they were developed more. Not having a time jump between TFA and TLJ was really harmful to their character development. Also the fact those two characters didn't meet until the end of the second movie didn't help either.

They didn't meet until the end of TLJ but I was half-watching Force Awakens on TNT or TBS and could swear both are in the Resistance command room when R2-D2 and BB-8 put together the full map to find Luke. Am I wrong? Or did they just not "meet?"

Your correct.

I agree with everything you said @TROR , but do you think RotR will be enough to save GE, or will the land still fall short?
I think the land will still fall short. Having Falcon take up such a large footprint without anything interesting inside will continue to harm the land. Even then, the land needs more than two attractions. Adding Star Tours and landspeeders that drive around the land would really help Galaxy’s Edge feel like it belongs.

this shows how little I know about the Star Wars storyline.... but is there something keeping the classic characters that I know from being in the land? Like darth Vader, yoda, r2d2?

Death Vader being dead doesn't keep them from having him appear in Tomorrowland. Just like a Marvel character than dies in the latest Avengers movie still appears in DCA. They can do it if they want to. Cause no one really cares.

Disney needs to stop building these 12-14 acre lands with only two rides (Avatar, Star Wars, New Fantasyland). It's such a waste of space.

Cars Land at least has 3 and the track layout and location of RSR at least justifies the amount of space it takes up.
I see your point, but I’ll gladly take the two rides of Avatar or Star Wars over the three rides of Cars Land.
