Animal Kingdom Lodge-underwhelmed

Am I missing something at the Animal Kingdom Lodge? Maybe staying there would be different? We went there to hang out one afternoon and my impression was:

Way out of the way, hidden, hard to find different buildings/location

Cool lobby, but wilderness lodge is more impressive

Grounds are not beautiful, but bland.

Not many animals around, hard to see them.

Pool area is just ok.

Restaraunts look very nice- but non resort guests can visit them any time.

Feels disconnected from the disney excitement.

Museum-like quality of decoration instead of resort-like feel

I am considering the AKL, so I am interested in what people have to say. As far as the animals, I have seen a mixed bag in reviews (both here and elsewhere). Some swear they never saw any animals, and some say they had no issues and saw them all the time.

We saw them all the time. It really is one, if not only favorite resorts. I know people don't care for it, find it too dark etc, but I find it soothing. It really is a matter of personal preference.

For us, when we went and visited it, we didn't think much of it. It wasn't until after we stayed there that we really loved it. I wouldn't say it is our absolute favorite, as that is Wilderness but we enjoy the quiet of the place. I know its a little farther out of the way than a lot of the places but sometimes we enjoy the escape from the madness and the craziness that the days at the park bring. But I agree it is all a matter of preference when it comes down to it.

We stayed there once in a savanna view and loved it, but I can honestly say it would not be worth it for us if you don't get a savanna view room. We loved seeing the animals from our balcony, and we really liked the pools - they have a shuttle that will take you back and forth from Kidani to Jambo's pools. We liked it, but again, wouldn't do it again without a savanna view. And I agree about the location - for that reason I think WL is a better deal at roughly the same price point.

Stayed there once. Better in theory than execution. The place seems somber and humorless when say compared to the Polynesian. It is remote. The pool is nice. Food and bar choices are outstanding. There is a sense of fun and life that just seem lacking however. Although we visit now at least twice on each vacation, we would never stay there again.

You are probably right, staying there might really b special vs just visiting

My own experiences have left me with a different impression. Nothing cooler than coming to the room and being greeted with African safari animals right off the balcony.

Restaurants offer unique menu selections - in a good way, yet you can still get bacon and eggs if you wish.

Yes, it is away from the masses but how is that a bad thing?

I will definitely stay there again and would recommend it to friends.

Not very likely that you would find 'art deco' on an African savanna, but you would find earthtones and muted colors. Even the pool reminds one of a sand pit or watering hole. We love AKL and find the imagineering and theming to be perfect for the animals who call it 'home'. Visitors must adapt.

Wilderness Lodge is very beautiful, but hardly would you find exotic beasts, ie. zebras, bongos, giraffes, etc. munching on the grounds. Well, possibly you might find Sasquatch there.;)

It's interesting you mention the Polynesian. Please don't get me wrong, I respect that so many love it but, to me, it feels like what it is: a 1960s imagined version of what a South Pacific hotel would look like. I keep waiting for Steve McGarrett (the 1970s version) to walk by. "Book 'em Danno." ;)

The stay is different then a theme park traditional stay. If you want loud noises, family running everywhere and spend most of your time at MK, then AKL probably isn't for you. It not good if you have kids in strollers as you have buses everywhere. If you don't like unique foods but rather enjoy burgers, hot dogs and turkey legs, then this resort is not for you. Sanna, Jiko and Boma has some of the best foods on property for those that like to get away from the traditional Steak, fish or chicken.

This is a more of a quiet resort away from the parks.

As for the orginial poster, I have to ask what time did you visit. If you went mid day then the animals wouldn't be out. This would be like visiting KS in the middle of a hot day, you wouldn't be impressed.

The animals are feed in early morning when people are up and getting ready for their day.

Wilderness lodge and AKL was designed by the same person. It the exact same layout with a different theme. Except for transportation. I do wish AKL had a boat ride to AK.

The merchandise is one of the biggest around with unique items. The only one in comparison is the Poly.

Having said all that, I think AKL was better w/o kidani village with the exception of Sanna. The buses are more crowded with multiple stops between resorts.

Still the best resort around for those that get tired of the theme park tradition

It really isn't out of the way and hard to find. If you know your way around WDW, it is actually easier to find than several hotels.

Except for the rooms, there is nothing at any hotel that you cannot experience as a visitor.

It is extremely similar to the WL. They're practically the same hotel; they just have different themes. Same shape, same smallish rooms, same gigando lobbies, etc.

The animals are more plentiful at feeding times. Sometimes you won't see any. I never understand why people say they see them "all the time" because they aren't out all the time. But you will see lots of animals if you stay there. Just not all the time.

It is not an upbeat, brightly colored place that screams "FUN!" It's an oasis of peace in the middle of all that screaming. That may be the best part...for me, anyway. They do have that parade of kids making noise every night, but it doesn't last long and isn't bad...and it's kind of cute. Even that fits the theme, too. Far less annoying than the Limbo at CBR (which is also cute.)

Boma isn't my favorite place to eat because I'm not big on that type of food, but the Mara is my favorite of the Deluxe QS places. There is just something about the Mara - the decor, the colors...the chips!

A lot of people LOVE Boma. Before Le Cellier was the hot restaurant, it was Boma, believe it or not. Everyone just HAD to eat there and try Zebra Domes. Always booked, lol. Then it was Le Cellier...now that is falling out of favor. I don't know what next...but Boma is still liked by many. Sanaa and Jiko are also VERY well liked by people who enjoy that sort of thing. People go there just to eat in those restaurants.

The rest of it is all opinion and the AKL is definitely not for everyone. If you think you might like it, you will probably adore it. But many people do not care for it, which I totally get.

I think it's a little slice of heaven. Best attention to detail and immerses us in the overall theme more than any of the hotels. It's my favorite of the Disney hotels for many reasons. But I like all of them except CR/BLT, lol.

And it has a kick- gift shop. :D

You didn't miss anything, I don't think. It simply was not your cup of tea. Not everything is for everyone. Just different strokes. :) I'm sure you'll find one you like a lot!

Some of my greatest Disney memories... Are sitting on the back porch of AKL... Having coffee and watching the sun come up... While watching the animals.... Appreciating the quiet... Calm... A vacation from the vacation I love the fact you can always find a quite place to just enjoy the MAGIC at AKL.... I love it! :)
Agreed a get away vacation from the sometimes crazy parks , we watched a thunderstorm roll in during an afternoon break while sitting on our Savanna View Balcony.

Much of this is highly subjective. It's like one person being in love with the Poly lobby and the next person not thinking it's anything special. I personally prefer the decor at AKL to WL, saw plenty of animals, and liked the looks of their pool...but haven't stayed (checked out my brother's room when they did) because it did feel too remote to me.

I also don't understand the gripe about the dining...this is a factor with every single resort. i.e. you could be staying at the Poly and people from any of the resorts could come dine at Kona and 'Ohana.
