Anesthesia Question

I broke a bone in my hand and have to get a plate put in on Wednesday. They are doing a local anesthesia. Does that mean that the loss of feeling will be limited to my hand? Also, the surgery is at 1pm, what effect would alcohol have on my body if I drank it that night?

Thanks

Do you mean drinking post-op? Unless you're taking a pain medication, you should be OK. Pre-op, drinking could affect how the anesthesia is absorbed.

Theoretically the local should be just in your hand, maybe a little into your arm. I would ask the doctor about alcohol if it's really neccessary that you drink that night.

Any other night I wouldn't mind not drinking, just that it's the last day of classes of university for the year, last chance to party with my friends. I thought it would be only in the hand since its pretty minor stuff.

Even if you can party that evening, you may not want to. Surgery is never a cake-walk, you will likely be in some pain and physically drained post-op. And depending on how much you "party", you might risk damaging the surgical site.

Sorry, I'm a parent, I think that way.

You will probably be on pain medicine.

DO NOT mix pain meds with alcohol.

I've had plastic surgery on my hand under local anesthesia and the area numbed will depend on where they need to cut, I was numb up to my mid forearm. I would imagine that you would be on pain medication afterwards and so you should not drink alcohol, but as with anything else, ask your doctor for the final word. Final party or not you don't want to risk your health or life.
