Wow. It somehow always suprises me how people want to see others fail.

He's just a kid! I'm no country fan, and I was mad as hell that these two made it to the end over so many other talented contestants, but the fact that he has a fantastic voice for country music is undeniable. When I saw his audition I thought, no matter how far he gets, the country music world is going to love him. Anyway, he seems like a good kid, I wish him the best- I just can't believe others wouldn't.

But when it comes down to raw talent, James Durbin is the real deal.

Should probably check yours first.

He's never appeared on Broadway. Not that being on Broadway is some big honor anymore, it's pretty much last resort for AI contestants before fully succumbing to obscurity (Taylor Hicks, Clay Aiken and several others).

He was an understudy in Wicked for Fiyero.

BTW, Lauren is from my hometown! That was my old Principal that she gave a car to! And yes, that is also my town that got hit so hard by the Tornados. Lauren is a sweetheart and was a local celebrity long before Idol. I have met her several times. I hope she makes it even bigger.

Scottie's look made my skin crawl. That southern male cocky-smarmy stare that you see if you ever we're confronted by necks of the red..if ya know what I mean.

That and he looks like Alfred E Newman+George Bush.

Never was a million...that's Survivor

even if you never sell a record, you still get paid $1 million to record it
That's Survivor you're thinking of, the winner doesn't get a million on Idol, far from it
...this year the winner, Scotty, gets at least $250,000 in advances for winning the show and recording the first album.
...Runner-up Alaina is also set to receive a major payday; the contact approved by Superior Court Judge Marjorie Steinberg calls for the 16-year-old to receive $87,500 for finishing second. The amount would be doubled if Alaina records an album.
They also get merchandising, $50K for Scotty, $40K for Alaina.
These winnings are a bit less than previous years, don't ask me why.

I think she will...she seems like a great girl...I was pulling for her in the finale.

I gave up on AI years ago when they stopped picking people who could really REALLY sing. I don't know squat about the winner and I don't think I could care any less, but it does boggle my mind that people still audition for it. It's no guarantee that you're gonna be successful, look at Taylor Hicks or whatever his name was. I guess some people want to get their foot in the door and AI is the easiest way, but you're guaranteed pretty much zero success.

Eh, even if you never sell a record, you still get paid $1 million to record it and you get to be moderately famous for four months. And it's certainly more success than if you just sat around in your office job and didn't audition.

And that's all if you win. And even if you do win and get all that, plummeting into obscurity where you release flop after flop and eventually get dropped from your label but still get shaded from the blogs and media can't really be worth it imo. But everybody has a different path to success.

I don't watch AI. The couple times I did, I found it grating, too-slow paced for my liking, and just not entertaining.

That being said, I don't understand why anybody would think "it isn't even worth trying". If you think you can sing, why wouldn't you try any way possible to get a shot at making a career of it? And isn't AI one of those ways? If you make it to the finals, you get exposure, you get coaching, you get to go on tour (if you make it to the final 10 or 12 of whatever), and you have a reasonable shot at a recording contract.

Sure, it's no guarantee, but if your hurdle to try something is "guaranteed", you'll never do much of anything in life. I got a college degree in economics. I worked hard and thought it would give me a shot a career. But it sure wasn't guaranteed. And even if your success is limited to the 6 month run of that AI season, that's a pretty good experience to have.

Being on Broadway or in any major musical is a huge honor. If it doesn't seem like a huge honor, that's because most of society doesn't value real talent anymore. There isn't any auto-tune on stage. What a shame.
