American Idol Experience reduces the number of shows per day and gets new schedule

Disney has a tendency to do that recently. They hop on to a concept when it has already peaked and then wonder why it isn't bringing in the crowds. Who wants to be a millionare was similar, but had a broader appeal since everyone could play. They also gave out legit prizes if you happened to make it to the hot seat and do well.

Sorry if I have already missed this info in the thread somewhere, but does anyone know the terms of the deal between WDW/DHS and American Idol/Product 19 (or whatever the company is) as to how long Disney guaranteed Idol space in that building? I am hoping it wasn't open-ended.

They should just move all of us in there to create the best vision for re-purposing that stage and area. C'mon guys...you KNOW we could do a pretty durn good job.

I'm surprised they haven't scaled back on the number of shows already. They seem to usually have trouble filling the theater in addition to getting enough guests to perform.

I honestly do not get what is wrong with people who want American Idol to leave? Ignoring the fact that it is quite a popular show at the parks, and ignoring the fact that there are usually very good singers each night (sometimes good, sometimes amazing) and ignoring the fact that the finale viewing around the jumbotron attracts a nice size crowd, do you not get what will happen if it leaves? That will give us another vacant building. If you want them to build something new, there is plenty of empty and vacant buildings/areas for them to do it in WDW.

Agreed. IMO, I think the use of the "American Idol" franchise helps it only slightly more than it hinders it. Too many people, for various reasons, detest the show. They then transfer that detest over to the theme park attraction.

It will be interesting to see how long they keep the atraction if the show fails this season. Yes, that is a possibility.... face it people like the singers but a huge part of the audiance showed up to hear Simon criticize people in a way that they always wanted to do themselves. Sad, but true and hilariously funny. It also does give people the opportunity to live out their dream of being on American Idol and afterall... isn't that what Disney is about.... making dreams come true.

I have to agree. As much as I love American Idol, the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire show does have more appeal...and was fun to watch!!

Reply to Cmdr_Crimson's Post...sorry

If Idol fails this upcoming season, they could always revamp the AIE to an X Factor attraction considering that's starting in the US next year, and is already popular here in the UK and other countries.

When I last visited DHS I was fairly interested in trying out the attraction but it turns me off the fact that a huge chunk of the day has to be given up to it, if they could some how reduce that then it might be more successful. I like the whole Grand Finale bit, but maybe the whole auditioning bit before hand could be shortened somehow?

The one thing that I'm very glad about regarding AIE is that they didn't have to spend a whole lot of money on the attraction. There is a lot of lighting/sound equipment that's very nice, professional level stuff that can be used in a lot of other places as spare parts or as primary equipment....array speakers are very flexible.

I honestly think that Who Wants to Be A Millionare: Play It had more of an appeal to guests than this...I still miss that show..I saw one of the Ultimate Kareoke Party..Er I mean The American Idol Experience and It didn't want me to come back to see it again..sorry.
In 2006, I went to that attraction six times in one day.

They should really hop on a franchise that will come around but hasn't yet.

For instance...

a.) He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (large nostalgic following, new toyline going strong...and new movie in the works)
b.) Thundercats (huge nostalgic following, movie rumors all over the place...and when that happens, a new toyline).
c.) Conan (the barbarian...not the talk show host) is also coming back...
d.) Voltron (but that may be too reminiscent of Power Rangers and Transformers.)
e.) Smurfs (new movie coming out...but even if the new movie bombs...the idea of turning guests "blue" and becoming a Smurf would be a great family attraction)
f.) TRON (Heck, they already own this one!)

I, myself, would love to see an attraction based on sports movies. Disney has done some great ones (Miracle, Remember the Titans, etc.)...and they always do well...so I'm shocked they have never done anything with them.

Transformers exploded after the movie...and Universal nabbed them up.

I really think sports would make a great land in a park...ESPN:The Experience (as long as they don't have poker and some of the other boring stuff they show during down times).

Here's an idea: turn the Idol stage into a 'late-night' show of sorts and put guests into the show - "Hollywood Studios Tonight" or something. The host picks a few people out of the audience to play a few games on-stage, someone could read a few jokes and use some of the Streetmosphere characters as the guest stars. They could create a few different formats so that every show was different. You wouldn't have to rely on the guests to carry the show, it would be easy to change the format if something wasn't working, and it would tie in with the Studio theme. SuperStar television was a fun show, just think what they could do with it today with all of the new technology! I'd like to see something similar to it replace AIE.

Ummm... they have that, it's called the ESPN Wide World of Sports

I mean for people not participating in or watching the games/events themselves. Kind of an immersive, sports themed area with attractions based on sports. Just an idea that the Imagineers could chew on, not fully developed in any way.
