America at EPCOT: need update?

The last time that I saw the American Pavilion presentation at EPCOT (which, BTW, is my favorite of all attractions at WDW, tied perhaps with the Carousel of Progress), I noticed that Ben Franklin and Mark Twain discussed the close of the millennium or century (forgot which) as they spoke from the lantern of Lady Liberty.

The script still spoke as if we were in the 20th century. I wondered then when they would update the dialog. I thought then (June 2001) that it was the only thing that stuck out and dated the attraction.

That line still needs to be updated I suppose, but I also wondered if the attraction should be tweaked given modern events.... or if it is too early to do so.

My personal thought is just to update the dialog so that it is current on the date, and maybe re-evaluate the final speech, but to leave the Liberty scene itself as the end. The speech currently implies that our prosperity and comfort is at a level that few nations have been able to maintain, and that our enemies now may come from dealing with the malaise that comes from such sustained comfort.

In a way, that may have played into what happened on September 11, 2001, but it also makes the show seem awkward in the current situation...

Any ideas for tweaking the final speech or the final scenes altogether?

And does anyone know if plans are underway to do so, anyway? Do they even realize that the dialog still refers to the 20th century as current?

The script has been adjusted. "back in the 20th century"

if they update anything at the Amercian pavilion, it should be the restaurant! Its just not anywhere near as cool as the restaurants at every other county's pavilion...surely America has more than hotdogs and hamburgers???

I think it is to early to do anything about 911, i think its history is still playing out, and once the dust clears then i think they will put it in.

As far as the restrant goes, habergrs and hot dogs are perfect. MAbe the could be better but i would change it, HAmbergers, Hotdogs, and Apple Pie, van't get anymore american then That

This attraction definitely needs upgrading. As much as I love the soundtrack, I think they will need to make some changes to appeal to younger people. I'm not saying replace it all, just add some twists and new rhythm here and there. And some new synth sounds. (Look at what barenaked ladies did for mitsubishi.)

And can't someone figure out how to make audioanimatronics more exciting? It used to be amazing, but when I see it through my kids eyes I feel like I'm looking at a Kmart mannekin. The kids are just not impressed. But again, kids will like anything with the right soundtrack.

My favorite part of the American Pavilion is the incredible paintings. Last time we were there waiting for the show I made each of my kids and their cousins pick a painting and tell what it was about and how it portrayed an important part of American history. It passed time and they actually enjoyed it -- a little.

Am I the only one, but was the rotunda closed for security reasons? I was there from Aug 23-30 and noticed that we were entering form where you normally exit the show. I could be mistaken. If anyone could clarify, I'd greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I know the rotunda was closed for a private party on one of the nights.

From what I understand, that's your answer right there. The rotunda is usually open during that day, but can be closed in the late afternoon/evening for special private events.

:( Well not really. COP has had an incorrect statement since it opened. " I hear two brothers from North Carolina". The Wright brothers were from Dayton Ohio. Yes they first flew in North Carolina (not to many sea breases in Ohio for lift) but they were born and lived in Ohio.:D

The rotunda is closed at evenings sometimes due to people having their wedding reception there. And if you see Italy isola roped off as well, you can bet that is the same.

We are going to a wedding with such a thing this December. WooHoo

Don't they have Chicken Sandwiches, too?

What they should do is put a HOOTERS in there. Bodacious babes serving up spicy buffalo chicken wings and cold brew. Oh.. my mouth is watering now!!!

They've been playing with the menu some.

At Christmas it was Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken Strips, Turkey Clubs, caesar salads, a chicken sandwich (a different style from Aug. 2001), clam chowder (seasonal, different than chili the year before). They also had cookies, ice cream, root beer floats.

what i'm saying is that even though hamburgers and hotdogs (and chicken sandwhiches) are considered American "delicacies", there's so much more. Each country has a little "fast food" with quick meals but also has a cool table service restaurant with traditional plates made by chefs and served in appropriate surrounding and usually with entertainment (belly dancers, musicians, etc). America is the only country that doesn't have the table service. That and I can make my own hamburgers and hotdogs at home, why would i want that at Disney?? They can still have the burgers and stuff, but offer something a little more reflective of American "Cuisine", not just burger joints...

I understand what you are saying, but there are some problems with having that there.

1. There isn't anywhere to get a burger or hot dog in World Showcase other than Liberty Inn. You would need to have a quick service place there for kids and adults that may not want anything but a burger and fries.

2. The America pavillion would need to be much bigger than it is now (probally dwarfing the other pavillions) in order to include a sit down restaurant.

3. What would you serve? I know other countries have diverse tastes and dishes, but America has lots of different tastes and preferences. That would mean either a) having a massive menu to include all the regions and types of American cuisine or b) leaving out several areas (leading to why were certain foods selected and others not).

4. It's not just Americans that go there. I know you can get burgers and hot dogs at other restaurants, but I had people from other countries tell me that they wanted a hot dog from America.

i'm not sure of sit down meal but for food america has alot.

there is hamburgers, hotdogs, meatloaf, turky and stuffing, baked ham, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, macaroni salad, potato salad, biscutes and gravy, steak and eggs, oatmeal, hash browns, western omlets, grits, bagles, buffalo wings, hogies of all kinds, apple pie, fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, sausage and pepers, BBQ chicken and ribs, the eggcream (a little milk, chocolate and seltzer water, very popular in new york cony island)

thats all I can think of for now. but your right america is the only one that dosn't have a sit down place, is it a good idea or not I don't know but america has a ton of food that they can serve.

don't get rid of the hot dogs and such because i know that people DO like them, but there's already a hot dog/hamburger place in future world and a mcdonaldss by canada. They wouldn't have to have a massive menu, but just choices from different areas, it could even be seasonal...
As for the space...well, i said what i'd like to see, not what's possible (unfortunately) :(
Just kind of thinking outloud...
