AMC Theater finally getting a replacement at Downtown Disney

I agree, had they kept the wrought iron I think I’d be okay with the rest of the changes but it went from looking like a New Orleans style restaurant to a generic “could be anything” restaurant.

Honestly, I think management would appreciate the flexibility of being able to put any different restaurant in there.

I'm torn because I like the overall direction they're aiming in because some parts are giving me Disney Spring vibes but am not a fan of what's happening to the Jazz Kitchen. Even Disney Springs' more modern mall look is occasionally shaken up by something like T-REX, Rainforest Cafe', The Edision, etc.

I’m going to miss the cartoonish style of the jazz kitchen. The rendering of the new concept is so lifeless and sterile. Sad. Who is going to Disney to experience architecture what is already in every mall and shopping center in the country….?
It's obvious to me they are trying to normalize the designs of each building so they can easily swap out tenants at any point.

Horrible. Why have any theming when you can have it look like any recent strip mall in a well to do suburb.
I always wonder if there’s a silent majority that secretly love these buildings, it seems most of us “super fans” prefer the themes but it’s not just Disney who has opted for bland over themed, Vegas has been doing the same thing for over a decade now.

The strip has gone from building amazingly themed fantasy resorts to building generic glass office buildings you could see in any downtown in any major city, but they’re packed.

Makes me wonder if “boring” is what most people want and we’re the exception.

People at the Disneyland resort will go to anything even if it looks like thirty year old stip mall on Harbor.

At least this stuff looks better than the Anaheim GardenWalk.

I just remember being 10 years old during my first DTD visit in 2002 and being amazed, including the Neverland Pool at DLH.
So many unique buildings & activities that reminded that we on Disney property itself like LEGO, Build a Bear, Rainforest, ESPN, & more to catch one's eye. I just have a hard time imagining kids wanting to stop for anything at the current Downtown Disney. It's turned a rather unimpressive mall and all the generic design/restaurant changes are still not impressive enough for young adults to make the specific trip either.

Drinks and Mexican food outdoors at DTD sounds like heaven to me though so I don't mind the Uva Bar change.

More concept art from the Parks Blog...

This is the new entrance and security screening area that is not a security screening area, but it's going to be the security screening area. The mid century mod tower and the water feature from the earlier image already got cut, and they still haven't included all the metal detectors and grumpy Security CM's glaring at you in this art yet. This is roughly where the green security tents have been for years, with Rainforest Cafe gone on the left of the image and the AMC gone from the right of this image.

Here's the various parts of the massive AMC Theater property. Notice The Hatmosphere is returning to Anaheim, right next door to the House Of The Future. Also notice that the two confirmed bachelors in the blue shirt and the red shirt chatting on the left side of the security screening area in the image above have gotten married and adopted a child later that same day. And the gentleman in the wheelchair keeps getting pushed into palm trees.

The band is having a hard time drawing a crowd in this one... It's a tough gig.

The new look for Uva Bar. I love the Uva Bar, so I hope they know what they're doing with that key element when it comes to the menu, but this looks like a nice update for the 2020's. And more shade! But keep an eye on that creeper in the black trench coat.

And we already talked about Ralph Brennan's getting an update from its cheap 1999 New Orleans Square On A Budget look. But why am I suddenly craving Dunkin' Donuts?

It is looking a bit sparse and upscale generic in these recent images. It's also looking very one-story in the new west end buildings. Nothing goes past about 18 or 20 feet high, everything is one level.

Also, some of the eye candy they had in the first vague images have been cut out. Like the mid-mod towers and water features. At least the computer generated clip art people seem to be having fun.

I don't know TP, judging by how far away this is from the bandstand (which should be approximately where the AMC entrance was) this looks more like a re-imagining of the AMC/Rainforest Cafe DTD entrance with both building being unsurprisingly demolished for new stuff.

I'm of the firm belief that it's looking due east and shows the security screening structure, from right about where the existing green security tents are/have been for the past decade. With ESPNZone/Rainforest on the left side of the photo, and AMC Theater on the right side of the photo. With the new Multicultural Mid Century Modern Lifestyle Space where the band is working a really tough gig shown in the other photos off to the right of the photo.

Roughly where this area has been for the past decade, but perhaps a few dozen yards further east to open up the area between the Adventure Tower and this security screening area a bit more.

Wild that Caruso's figured out how to do Downtown Disney better than Disney has. I love popping into the Grove (and when I'm on the other side of town, the Americana) because they're just aggressively pleasant outdoor places. Modern Main Streets with trolleys, fountains, and parks to boot.
Yep. Both The Grove and The Americana feel and look like Disney-fied malls, if there were any. Very classy, pleasant, and charming. The fountains, light posts, and trolleys are the cherries on top.

DtD is unpleasing to the eye and overall stale. These updates won’t make much of a difference.

You know my friend, with this latest set of concept art I'm now even more sure, before was 90-95% sure but now 98-99.9% sure, that this isn't the new security screening area that you think it is:

11262863_112221-kabc-downtown-disney-rendering-img.jpeg

But rather its this stage area in the new concept art:

iul2yg4t7y82hlu4btjgyuhik5a.jpg

Heck in the distance of the new stage concept art (upper left of the image) you can even see this area from the original concept art:

11262863_112221-kabc-downtown-disney-rendering-img.jpeg

Now obviously things have changes and been more refined in the new concept art from the original concept art but the overall look is the same.

And yes it appears there will be a redesigned security screening area, but it was just never reflected in the original concept art as that wasn't what they were trying to focus on at the time. As the focus was trying to get across the overall concept, not mundane things like security screening.

Is Earl of Sandwich really that great? I kind of can't believe some people are celebrating the news of the pop up location. I must be missing something.

I remember the first time it opened in DTD, trying it and not being terribly impressed. But I never tried it again so maybe I missed something, too. I should probably give it another shot just to confirm I'm not crazy or something.

Side note; Earl of Sandwich keeps dying and finding mysterious ways to come back so now I just think of it as the Emperor Palpatine of DTD. "I've died before. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be.. unnatural."

I think it’s a combination of it being good and being a unique offering at Disney. I don’t think there’s anywhere else on property to get a sub style sandwich. It also has a pretty unique menu, we have a couple here in Vegas and a few times a year I’ll get a craving and drive the hour round trip to get a 1492.

I eat Capriotti’s much more frequently and think they’d have the same following if they came to DTD.

There is nothing about any of this concept art that says "Disney". If you saw these images randomly, out of context, would you know this is part of a Disney-themed resort? No, you wouldn't.

What is going on over there? Am I just old and out of touch? Is this just too cool for me to understand? All I see if "mall". The last thing I want to do on a family vacation is hang out in a mall with inflated prices and with less than what is available at the mall by my house.
