AMC Theater finally getting a replacement at Downtown Disney

I'm a huge fan of Porto's, so why does its addition to Downtown Disney make me uncomfortable? Perhaps I'm unexcited about them having to adopt Disney pricing.

I'm curious about the Din Tai Fung choice. We've got a few here and demand far outstrips the ability of their staff to handle orders quickly. Or sometimes correctly. I mean, it's not bad food (maybe a little bland and single-flavored) but with to-go orders averaging 30+ minutes at two of the locations here (table service on a Saturday can be the same), I'm not sure how well that'll translate with park guests schedules.

Always a looooong wait to get a table.

Always a looooong wait to get a table.

A few years ago I stumbled across the one at South Coast Plaza. It was a complete mob scene in front with crowds of college kids milling about waiting for the hostess to summon them. I didn't get it.

I'm thinking this is like Earl of Sandwich, where prior to its Anaheim arrival everyone freaked out about it being the BEST SANDWICH ON THE PLANET and then I went there for the first time and it was... a nice sandwich.

I mean honestly, how much can you elevate a nice sandwich, a bag of chips, and a Coke?

Din Tai Fung is probably nice Chinese food, tempered to American audiences and palates. But somehow it becomes this weird and manic experience that never lives up to the hype.

It's probably just some good Chinese food. And a Coke. 🧐

I've had Earl of Sandwich. It was an okay expensive sandwich. It was better than what they serve in the park. Compared to other retail sandwiches though, it was a little better than Subway but not WhichWich or Firehouse sub level.

Remember when everyone went crazy of P.F. Chang's? It's the same thing with Din Tai Fung. It is not real Chinese food.

Din Tai Fung is Taiwanese and is authentic food from what I know. It's probably no different from dumplings at any decent restaurant I'd imagine.

I'd choose a Schlotsky's sandwich any day of the week over Earl's.

Oh, man. The only Schlotsky's close to me closed during the pandemic. There was one around the corner from my house growing up so I have a soft spot for that restaurant. This was back when they sold one sandwich only, the original Schlotsky's.

Din Tai Fung specializes in xiao long bao aka soup dumplings. It's a whole thing. Personally I am not a huge fan of Din Tai Fung... they take pride in having thin wrappers, but I like mine a bit thicker. There's a lot of other places I can walk into and sit down to get XLB vs. waiting for a table at Din Tai Fung.

I foresee very long waits and pricey prices... I wonder of they'll have a viewing window to the outside to watch the dumpling making.

Plus it’s awful. Like eating meat between a couple of sponges.

Yassss, they should build one in Downtown Disney, I might eat there.

Oh man. I’ve slept on this news. Din Tai Fung AND Porto’s? Love both but the lines will be outrageous. Maybe this will mean shorter waits at Ralph Brennan’s.

I've been pondering this recent Downtown Disney permit for Building DD, which is the Star Wars Trading Post/old Rainforest Café:

Description: Dtd - Bldg Dd - Change Of Use: 2,500 Sq Ft Portion Of Existing First Floor Retail To Be Used As New Cast Member Rooms. Install Fencing Around Storage Areas. New Roof Mounted Boiler. With Mechanical, Electrical And Plumbing.

So Disney is taking a hefty chunk of the retail space and converting it for CM use? The valuation for the project is $487,500.00, which made my eyes pop a bit. And no mention of converting available space upstairs.

What the heck is going on with that building?
It's the new cast member lounge complete with hot tub, boiler for brewery and multiple TVs. Disney takes care of their cast members.

Schlotsky's is a strange restaurant to defend based on my experiences with the place. I remember dirty restaurants with questionable food, with the kicker being the stank of those questionable Cinnabon "cinnamon rolls" absolutely smothering the air. They've seemingly rebranded somewhat over the past few years, but I doubt I'll ever give them another chance to win me over.

I know there's a vocal contingent of 'EOS is the most overrated quick service on the planet' on here and maybe it is, but for me Earl wins that battle each and every time. Granted, it's hard for me to think of many restaurants I would choose Schlotsky's over.
