Just a bit of trivial news

Yesterday, I posted one of my favorite 'old-time' TV theme songs was RAWHIDE.

Coincidentally, American Idol played that song last night during their opening scenes from their San Antonio auditions. But even more coincidental, Frankie Laine, the guy who recorded this theme song, died last night in San Diego @ the age of 93.

I gotta play the lottery today. :lookaroun

PS: If you ever get to see a re-run of Rawhide, make sure you check out a very young Clint Eastwood who played a featured role in that series.

I noticed that too last night, then the news this morning was just really freaky....

BTW, Clint Eastwood's character's name was Rowdy Yates I believe.

Slight thread drift...sorry.

I had forgotten the name...thanks for that. Clint must have been in his early 20s when he got that role.

I was watching a re-run of the "Rifleman" with Chuck Conners the other night and it jogged my memory of the Rifleman toy rifle I got one Christmas. It even had that large hooped trip mechanism for rapid fire. Here's a photo of it that I got from the internet. This was a very, very cool rifle.

I wanted one of those so-o-o-o-o bad. A kid on our street got one of the Mattel sub-machine guns one year, and he was hot stuff for a long time! He was always picked as a team leader when we played war.

Anyway, songs...at first I was going to pick Green Acres (it's my main phone ring), but after thoughtful consideration, I've gotta go with Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The Jeffersons.

Well we're movin' on up...to the east side...to a deluxe apartment in the sky..
Yeah movin' on up...to the east side...we finally got out piece of the pie.

EDIT: Has anybody said "Family Matters?"

I think this one had two different theme songs...originally I think it was "What a Beautiful World" by Louis Armstrong but then I think it changed...

:ROFLOL: One of my friends had the Mattel sub-machine gun along with a slew of other cool guns. He use to supply everyone with a weapon when we played 'war.' The sub-machine gun was the best because of the automatic rapid fire. LOL...

What's interesting is that most of the memorable theme songs are from shows 30 or 40 years old.

I recently read a story about the trend away from theme songs, because they "waste time."

Many of the shows cited here depended upon the theme song to set the premise of the show. In the first 60 seconds, we know all about the relationships in the "Brady Bunch". Because of the theme song, they didn't have to mention frequently who these kids were and that they were not blood relatives.

Same with "Gilligan's Island." Not only do we know how they got there, but we have a mini character profile of each person.

(stupid camp trick--you can sing "Amazing Grace" to the theme from "Gilligan's Island." awww....come on.....you know you want to try it!)

No one has mentioned an obscure one:
The Gary Shandling Show
the tune was infectious

Artist: Theme by Joey Carbone, Garry Shandling, and Alan Zweibel Lyrics
Song: It's Garry Shandling's Show Lyrics
This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The theme to Garry's show.
Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song.
I'm almost halfway finished,
How do you like it so far,
How do you like the theme to Garry's Show.

This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The opening theme to Garry's show.
This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits.
We're almost to the part of where I start to whistle.
Then we'll watch "It's Garry Shandling's Show".

This was the theme to Garry Shandling's show.

Great observation...The Beverly Hillbillies is another example of this. :sohappy:

When "The Nanny" premiered, they decided to go with the "vintage" style show theme song so that it would always be clear why she was in that household.

For some reason, I started thinking about the theme song for "Love, American Style" and game shows like "The Dating Game." Not that they're great theme songs, but they are memorable, for better or worse.

I can't believe it took until Page Five to see "The Brady Bunch" mentioned! (Thanks, Yellow Shoes!)

Who over 30 cannot tell "the story of a man named Brady"?!

And I also agree with Yellow Shoes that theme songs are great to set the premise for the show! That was true for so many, but it was especially true for the most memorable ones:

The Brady Bunch
Gilligan's Island
The Jeffersons
The Nanny
Fresh Prince of Bel Air

And to a lesser extent, but still setting the stage of the show:

Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley
Love Boat
Major Dad
A Different World
(And lest we forget...) The Wonderful World of Disney!

I love good theme songs that set the stage. They are NOT a waste of time, because they get you psyched and ready to settle in for the show (as opposed to grazing to another channel).
