I’m not sure how you can call it anything but a backstory? It is literally a movie about how Cruella came to be and finishes off before the animated movie begins.
But its not. Cruella loves dogs in the movie and is friends with Rodger and Anita. She is nice to Horace and Jasper. She learns to not give in to her dark side which wasn't really all that dark.

The Cruella in the movie Cruella doesn't line up at all with the animated film, nor do the other characters and relationships. Its as cannon as The Descendants or Monster High. It was a cute watered down version of Devil Wears Prada with Disney Easter eggs.

To me the animated film took place after, like the Cruella movie really isn’t the 101 Dalmatian’s story, and it all matches up story wise having Cruella act as a backstory, Cruella clearly knows Roger and Anita in the animated movie, but each to their own you can think of it how you please.

I just don't see how you can have Emma Stone's character suddenly steal puppies from around town to skin them and make them into a coat. It doesn't fit the character they created. Critics agreed.

"It never answers the burning question posed by its own existence, though: what new information could possibly make us sympathize with the original movie's nuclear family-loathing, wannabe-dog-killing monster? The further away from "Cruella" that you get, the more its connection to "101 Dalmatians" seems a cynical attempt to leash an existing Disney intellectual property to a story that has no organic connection with it."

I went to buy my ticket for September 9-10, and while I tried to resist, I gave in and checked the rehab schedule. As of June 27, the Peter Pan ride is still closed. Admittedly, the rehab schedule has only extended two days since I last checked, but I'm beginning to think that there is more to this routine rehab than meets the eye. What, though, I don't know.

Female villains are misunderstood. Male villains are always bad because they are male.
A Christmas Carol is the OG sympathy for the Devil story. Well, Paradise Lost is literally about understanding the Devil.

The point is; its not a new concept and its not gender specific.

A Christmas Carol is a story of a man turning from evil to good, not from good to evil. It is a redemption story, not a villain arc. Paradise Lost I suppose you could make more of the case that it's about the dealings of the Devil and his continual self destruction, but unlike movies such as Cruella, Venom, or Maleficent, we're not rooting for Satan's victory in Paradise Lost. He is, very clearly, the villain of the story and we want him to lose.

Anyway, I don't care if it's Cruella, Maleficent, Venom, Morbius, Joker, or any other villain - I don't like the glorification and justification of evil in movies. Film, as well as all forms of art, should point us to higher ideals, to a beauty which we strive for. I want to elevate goodness and truth, not villainy and deceit.

They are books about why "evil" characters behaved a way. It justifies their actions by giving context to them and showing the trauma that created negative thought processes.

And many of those movies don't glorify evil, they feature flawed characters combating a villain or antagonist and usually realizing by the end that they are not like their evil foil and choosing not to fall into the same murky moral standing. I wouldn't even call Cruella or Venom an anti-hero in the films, much less a villain or evil. Joker is an Anti-Hero in the film, but even so he is shown attacking a society which is far worse than who is as an individual. Its almost a Frankenstein story with us sympathizing with, but still horrified by, the monster that they created through their own callousness.

Beginning June 30, 2023, Peter Pan's Flight is no longer on the refurbishment list and has hours listed on the Disneyland website (as always, this could change).

By the way, what do we know about the Little Mermaid ride? It's closing down at the same time as the others, but do we know when that is reopening?

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride will close a second time for refurbishment on July 24 - The Orange County Register reports the attraction will be closed through August 10.

Alice in Wonderland is scheduled to reopen July 21.

"The standard refurbishment work in Fantasyland is part of Disneyland’s general maintenance and upkeep process, according to Disneyland officials.

Disneyland occasionally staggers refurbishment projects to keep attractions available to visitors for longer periods. Without staggering the refurbishment projects, Peter Pan’s Flight, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and Alice in Wonderland would have all been down at the same time for four weeks straight."
