News Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Peter Pan's Flight and Ariel's Undersea Adventure closing for refurbishment in June 2023

All other remakes I have been deliberately avoiding like the plague, including "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Lady and the Tramp", "Mulan", "Cruella" (which, like "Maleficent", looks like an attempt to turn a classic Disney villain into a nicer person)
Cruella's one of the better ones in my opinion. It's up there with the 2016 Jungle Book & Pete's Dragon. It's not a rehash of Dalmatians & actually gets pretty edgy for a family friendly PG-13 Disney film. It has a very Martin Scorsese-lite aesthetic. Cruella's portrayed more like an antihero in the film but she's certainly not a hero like they did in the Maleficent film. Worth a view in my opinion but your mileage may vary.

I actually didn't mind Maleficient, though the only reason that movie works is that Angelina Jolie is giving her all.

But BATB (the only one I've ever seen) was so wretched that it destroyed any appetite that might have existed for any of the others.

The Disney sequel comparison is apt, but I suspect they're fueled in part by people who have enough nostalgia to be intrigued by the existence of the remakes, but not enough nostalgia to actually sit down and watch an animated movie of all things! OR they're interested in the remakes because they take as gospel every Buzzfeed-esque article ever written about how "problematic" the original features all apparently are.

Here's what the Orange County Register reported today about the refurbishments.

"Disneyland will temporarily close Peter Pan’s Flight, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and Alice in Wonderland on June 5 for standard refurbishments, according to Disneyland officials.

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and Alice in Wonderland will reopen about two weeks later on June 16. A reopening date has not yet been set for Peter Pan’s Flight, but the popular Fantasyland dark ride aboard an enchanted pirate ship soaring over London will be closed at least through June 21, according to the Disneyland website.

The refurbishments of the three Fantasyland rides that share a common building next to Sleeping Beauty Castle are part of Disneyland’s standard operations for general maintenance and upkeep. Walt Disney Imagineering is not expected to make any notable show changes to the attractions."

If Alice and Mr. Toad reopen on June 16 while Peter Pan still remains closed, then I'm not sure it's an issue of them sharing a building. Otherwise, I'm sure they would have all reopened together, just as they are all closing together.

Incidentally, I just took another look at the rehab calendar, and as of June 25, the latest date available, Peter Pan is still closed. So again, I don't think the rehab timetable has to do with them sharing a building necessarily.

I don't think the later reopening date of Pan disqualifies this from being a building issue; it just might be an instance of whatever issue affecting the building is *just a little worse (or possibly a lot worse)* in Pan than it is in the other attractions.

OR they really are going to take this opportunity to swap out the Indian scene. I mean, if the ride already has to be closed anyway, why not, right? Ultimately, one longer closure is less disruptive to most guests than two shorter closures.

If that's the case, then it would not be just a "standard refurbishment", as the OC Register claims. The article also claims that Imagineering is not expected to make any significant changes to the rides themselves. So chances are, when the ride reopens, the Indians will be retained, at least for the moment. It is probably a matter of routine maintenance and upkeep, though it doesn't explain why Peter Pan is closed longer than Alice or Mr. Toad. Maybe it has to do with the unique ride system, I don't know.

While I'd like to believe we can always take huge corporations at their word, it'd hardly be the first time Disney lied to the press if they didn't tell the OC Register exactly what they're doing.

Definitely could be the ride system needing some extra TLC.

If it's true, then, that they are indeed removing the Indians (and not telling anyone about it beforehand), then I would think that it would take more than a few weeks to reopen. As it is, the ride is now closed for roughly three weeks and counting.

Not necessarily. Where the Indians are in the Disneyland version, the newer Shanghai version simply has some (flat) bushes.

While they could build something more elaborate in that space, there's precedent for something much simpler being there instead.

But don't forget, there's also the scene in Skull Rock. In Disneyland, it shows Tiger Lily trapped in the water. In Shanghai, Skull Rock has Tinker Bell is shown trapped in a lantern, while Peter Pan reclines on a rock, imitating Captain Hook, while the real Hook (seen in shadow) sneaks up behind him.

They could easily add the Tinker Bell in the lantern where Tiger Lily is and call it a day IMO.

You're reading too much into this. Whether a normal refurb or something to do with the building itself specific to Peter's section the older attractions sometimes take longer to come back from refurb, its that simple.

So has it been confirmed yet that Peter Pan's Flight will become Wendy's Magical Journey and will focus on Wendy and Tiger Lilly trying to teach manners to the lost persons while Hook & Peter become best friends?

Didnt Disney say Roger Rabbit was supposed to he renamed to Roger and Jessica Rabbit's Crime Stoppers? Wonder what happened with that.

It was announced that these are routine refurbs and nothing will change.

Cruella is a pretty good movie. More of a backstory or prequel than remake of 101 Dalmatian’s.
Wouldn't call it a prequel or backstory as this Cruella isn't mean-spirited and looking to steal and slaughter puppies. She's just "edgy" and shows up her more Cruella-like antagonist.

On one hand, I praise it for being something other than just a live action remake. On the other hand, it took an interesting character and made her bland and thought that a billion needle drops could substitute in place of writing and direction.

I’m not sure how you can call it anything but a backstory? It is literally a movie about how Cruella came to be and finishes off before the animated movie begins.
