Airfare changing anyone else's plans?

Our trip is booked and all paid for, except for return airfare. I'm seriously considering canceling this summer though. Airfare is through the roof. We live near Boston and have 3 airports to fly from. Flight down cost $1,000 for the 5 of us. Flight back is gonna run us even more.

I just can't stomach what the oil companies are doing to the economy. Literally, choking it to death. I'm feeling like part of the problem if I contribute to this insanity. The government tells us we need to put money into the economy to get it back on track. How can we do that when it costs $3.60 for a gallon of gas, or it costs a family of 5 over $2,000 to fly to Orlando? To think, just 3 years ago, we could all fly to Orlando for about $600 round trip.

No. 5 people, 1,300 miles. I'd go nuts.:hammer:

Changing resorts is an option, but a limited one. There's 5 of us, so Wilderness and AKL are out. The mods are out, except for Riverside, and squeezing 5 into that room would be uncomfortable as hell. We could do 2 rooms.....

The thing is, I'm very stubborn. And I have my limits. This situation with the gas prices REALLY gets under my skin. Disney at least has options for us. Getting there, there are very few to get us around this oil price issue.

I've felt strongly on this issue for many years. Oil/gas is the blood of this country, if not the world. The government sees fit to stick it's nose into other issues where we don't need them. The one area we really need them to do something about, and they REFUSE to get involved. It just drives me crazy.
I am a chicken when it comes to posting my political opinions on this board however, I must tell you that I am 100% in you arena on this issue. Not much us average people can do about it.

If you think about two rooms at a value, connecting, it is a good option. We are vacationing again this year ar WDW, not like I am being forced to do it, but because the value for our money is so great there. We enjoy it, we got a great discount on the room, we don't over buy on tickets (we don't hop and we don't go to a park every day) and we don't do "signature" dining. We looked into going to the southwest, running around Arizona and western CO, but by the time we booked a flight, rented a car and hotels, food etc...it is cheaper for us in WDW.
5 In a car is no fun, I know. We took many a vacation when the kids were young and we are a family of 5. We just never had the extra money to fly and driving was our only option. We did two cross country trips that would have scared sane people but we made it with all the kids alive and well after three weeks in the car. This was before TV's and dvd players...way before, heck, we had a "bag" cell phone with a 30 minute talk time and thought we had it made!
Hnag in there, something will come up!

I have to book two sets of tickets for this summer.

Two R/T from Atlanta to NYC, and Three R/T Newark to Orlando

Most of the time they are cheaper on Tuesdays. I am booking this Tuesday before it gets any worse.

Driving is not really an option.

How about a cabin at Ft. Wilderness? They seem pretty big. I will let you know next week since I will be staying in one with five people.

That's more of my stubbornness. FW transportation is terrible. Add into that having to rent a golf cart at $50 a day, it isn't worth it.

Do the family suites at the value resort (forget which All Star it is) sleep 5? We've done 2 connecting value rooms a couple times just to put our 2 boys in a room other than us and have the extra bathroom. It wasn't so horrible. I know how you feel, tho. We've gotten spoiled to staying in mods or deluxes, too. I think if it came down to go/not go I'd prob'ly make the best of the values. Or at least do a split stay. I hope you can work it out.

I'm pretty nervous about the whole gas hike, too. My hubby works in the oil industry (engineering). These increases create more work and higher pay rates in his line of work but there's always a point where the bubble will burst. Last spring he was out of work for 2 months when the job openings in his line of work totally tanked. We had friends who were out of work for a year. My brother-in-law went 6 months. Thank God we had the opportunity to prepare for that and we made it thru just fine. His income decreased substantially from what he was making before being out of work but we're still okay. We haven't had a chance to put our savings back where we like it to be yet. That takes time. If there's another bubble burst we might not be as fortunate as we were the first time around. We currently have a big vacation planned/reserved for September but we remain cautious. We put our deposits down to hold everything but we have no intention of allowing another nickel out of our bank accounts towards the balance on the reservations until that balance is due just in case. In the past we would've just paid the balance in full at the time of booking. I guess one could say our cautiousness is a side-effect of the gas increases.

I think I may have suggested this before, but have you checked into flying out of Hartford? I know it's further out of the way, but sometimes you can get a better deal there.

I recently bought airfare to WDW for September. Thought the price $300 (RT w/ taxes) was a bit high. Now I'm looking at airfares for October and they are $335 before taxes - and for some really crappy flight times. The good flight times are over $650! I have one low fare airline to choose from but it only flies a couple days a week and also somewhat crappy times. Makes it tough to use them on a regular basis.

What's really bad is it isn't just the oil prices that are spiking the fares, it's the demand! Somehow people are still buying airline tickets even though gas, food, etc. are all going up at the same time. They'd go down if the demand wasn't there.
Say it with me folks - INFLATION.

Going to be a tough year figuring out the air travel, I'd say!
Glad I only have to buy airfare for myself. 4 or 5 family members would put it out of reach, I'm afraid.

Another option in New England is DirectAir out of Worcester. They fly non-stop to Sanfod for about $100. Might be worth a shot....

Changed my plans. We were going Monday-Monday in May but switched to Tuesday because of a cheaper flight. Not a big change but one nonetheless.

This is the first year we didn't purchase round trip tickets. We purchased one way on Southwest for $79. Still waiting for a better deal for the way home June 1st. Maybe I'll just stay there and not come home. :)

The prices are ridiculous and only getting worse. We have a trip in Sept. I booked maybe 2 weeks ago at $119 one way from Providence to Orlando on Southwest and figured if it went down, I'd get a credit. Since then the price has gone up to $210, and that is just one way!! I can't book for the trip back yet since the date hasn't been released yet but I'm almost afraid to find out what they will be asking for it. No advice for you, I just share your pain.

I did the same thing for July. Problem is, they're not coming down.

Which is too bad since we live about 10 minutes from there. Problem is, they only fly certain days, and it's 1 flight per day (if that). There baggage fees are outrageous as well. Add in the cost of transportation from Sanford, and you're not much better off.
