Airfare bust

Hi all!

So of course i've been stalking the air fare since we booked our trip. And I was trying to avoid putting the air fare on a cc. So I was going to book it tomorrow. But it went up! Like by $100! UGH! Why did I wait? :brick: I had a fare for under $200 round trip per person which isn't amazing but its pretty good. Now i'm trying to decide, do I wait for it to go down or just book it anyway?

I booked yesterday for our August trip and paid over $300 pp round trip. $200 sounds "good" these days! My preference is SWA, but their less expensive ---- relatively speaking ----- fares are on flights that include connections and plane changes and that makes a long day out of a trip that normally takes a bit over 2 hours. We opted for USAirways because the fare was just nominally more expensive and we can fly non-stop and arrive at a reasonable time. We will do carry-ons, so the baggage fee was not a consideration. I was getting nervous about booking with our trip 3 months out. I pretty much figured our fares this year would be high and we budgeted for it.....

Also be sure to clear your cookies/ cache when you are going to go back on and do a search for flights. If you go in and search, then leave the page, sometimes companies will see that you are shopping around and not offer the cheapest options. I Read that in a business magazine.

This ^........This is absolutely true, the website remembers your IP address. Sometimes the cheapest will be the first time you search....Also again ALWAYS book your flight on Tuesday afternoon, the airlines have learned that most people are home on the weekends therefore with lots of time are planning thier vacations. Less people are booking on tuesdays therefore they lower the fares to entice more booking. Supply and demand. This secret has been out for sometime now, I suppose the airlines soon will change thier methods accordingly.

With airfare, playing the waiting game is rarely a good idea, piticularly this time of year where fuel prices change radically.

Geez all of these prices sound wonderful to me...even the higher ones. We have just been avoiding air travel altogether since no matter when we want to go or where we want to go...we can't seem to find anything that isn't right around $400 pp. In fact, my parents are flying here from Ft. Lauderdale over the summer and we're being flexible with dates and times b/c the best available fares are around $400 and by just modifying it a tad for convenience raises it to more like $600 pp. Seriously- we're just talking Florida to Texas! I also don't have the luxury of last minute booking since I have to be squared away on our work calendar pretty far in advance to have any shot at the dates I want. We're at the point where we're just going to embrace the great American road trip b/c $1600-2400 on air is just not happening.

We booked flights last night for the first week in Sept. thru AirTran from Columbus. $222 per person round trip. Not too bad, but by the time we paid for seat selection (that really chaps my hiney) it was a total of $700 for the 3 of us. We crunched the driving numbers and decided we could justify the cost difference to save ourselves 30 hours on the road. Air Tran did confirm that they will credit us the difference if I find it cheaper between now and then.
102 days!
