African Elephant Dies Following Pregnancy

Tragic! I spoke with one of the trainers at AK on May 10 about the loss of the baby elephant. I asked if they knew why the baby had died, as was told that the mother had not yet expelled the baby, and it could be reabsorbed, but at any rate, they were trying to let nature take it's course. If the mother passed the fetus, then it would be examined. The trainer did say that the baby that died was very large. The trainer also said that the mother elephant was very depressed and spent most of her time with the other 2 babies. So sad

OMG this is so sad. Do any of you know how many elephants they have there?
I think 10 before the babies. So there should be 12 then. With the loss of this one there should be 11. However another elephant is due to give birth later this year.

The loss of the first fetus is not uncommon for African Elephants. In fact, many elephants in the wild lose their first baby. The loss of the baby was sad, but not completely unexpected I'd imagine. However, it is tragic to hear the mother elephant has also died from the pregnancy. Given their past success, I know the AK staff is top-notch and this must be very difficult for all involved. Its quite sad.

I went on kilamijaro today and there were two baby elephants, maybe the other one was born recently.

No, there have already been two baby elephants born. These are Kianga and Tufani, which you saw. Another is due in late summer. Successful births of African elephants are very rare. Ak's first attempt was unsuccessful like this last one. However that mother was fine. The second and third pregnancies gave us Kianga and Tufani. The fourth was the one that died recently, and now a fifth is on it’s was for later this year.
