Im in 2nd period now. We have just taken our Writing FCAT Test..It's a thing for the whole state, that kind of test. Well, we have to use #2 penicils, and since almost no one brings them, the school gets them, and gives them to us to use for the test. Well, every pencil they gave out had an advertisement on the side...An ADVERTISEMENT!!!...wanna guess what for?..."The Perfect Score"!!...The movie in which them folks try to steal the test results for the SAT's...Only Florida Schools....:hammer:

But you didn't have to pay for that pencil did you?

If I'm supplying the materials I'll put what I want on it. Free is Free & you don't get that too much anymore.

Kinda tacky though...have you seen the movie yet?

No, I didnt have to pay for it, but if you could hear how strict they are on these tests, You'd know that they are in no position to be advertising a movie, in which the whole point is not to take the test, but instead, steal the answers.

OK, obviously my attempt at humor flopped.

Do I know how strict these tests are...yes I do. I have kids in school & I was one myself too...a very long time ago.

We have Regents tests here in NY...very similar to FCATs...you have to pass these in order to qualify for graduation. The standards have been upped in the past few years and there are no exceptions...even special ed kids have to pass them. (and there is a fight about that right now)

When I was in HS...way back in the 70's...my junior year I was scheduled to take 7 Regents for finals. I ended up taking only one..typing... because all the rest had been stolen! If you didn't pass the course on your class average you failed. No make up test was offered. There were alot of very unhappy people in summer school that year.

I just remembered reading in the Miami Herald on Sunday about schools that are notoriously bad suddenly doing outstanding on the FCAT...weird? maybe not because someone walked in on a teacher after school let out and the teacher was changing the answers for her students and bubbling in the right answers and now there's this controversy of how much cheating is going on in the classes yet no one seems to care...cheating, stealing...the pencil makes more sense now huh

Ah yes, being a junior, I had to stay in my 2nd period class today for 2 hours so the sophmores could have a 2 hour period to take their FCATs. Stupid sophmores...(just kidding Patrick) I'm glad I didn't have to take it anymore. In two weeks is the whole thing and it's FCAT all week which is good for me because that means I'll be doing nothing in my classes (since they moved exams to the week before FCAT).

Lol...I have friends in higher grades, so I been hearing that same thing all day :hammer: ...

And yea, Im not a big fan of Fcat's either. It's sad that the school is so money hungry, alot of people dont have any electives, but instead, two or 3 FCAT classes a day, and have to make all there electives up over summer. I know, im my cousins elementary school, people were throwing up, cuz they were pushed so hard, and were so nervous. I think my school is a C though. And...they added science this year, and I am AWEFUL at science...We're Taking, Science, math, and reading later on in the year. :(

I think the FCATS are like New Yorks REGENTS. Im just praying for my 32 on my math, being thats all one needs to pass. You CANNOT graduate without passing the math.

Is that a 32%? People here in NY were having a fit because students could pass a Regents test with just a 55%. Of course that was the introductory score, now everyone has to get at least a 65.

By the way the pencil thing, I see the irony, but as a teacher, you take what you can. You wouldn't believe the number of students that show up for class or a major test without a writing instrument of any type.

Sorry kind of got away from me there.

Thats for the Math A...you have to get 32 out of 85 points & thats with the curve. Passing, if I'm not mistaken, has been dropped to 55% because of the mess last year.

What was the use of raising the standards if they lower the passing grade? :hammer:

Let me get this straight... it's graded on a curve, yet one only needs to get a 37% to pass? (32 out of 85).

Oh man. America needs to toughen up on math skills. No ownder so many companies are hiring computer jobs out to foreign countries. (A lot of people say its the price -- cheaper over seas -- but I can tell you from experience, it is TOUGH to find someone that can code scientific apps -- easy to find database programmers, tough to find anyone with strong math skills).

Kids, please study math so I don't have to hire out over seas.

I will check out the schools that I cover and see if we got those pencils in SWFla. Now I want one of these! I cover 12 school sites where I live and they are all FCAT crazy at the moment. I just stand back. I sometimes feel that all of the FCAT stuff actually takes away from the true education of the students. They prep for this test and seem to skip other aspects of what they are teaching.

ah, to remember one year ago, having to take FCAT but with special privalages. I could take the test all day. (I still hatted it)

I remember science, it was easy, now it is hard.

:drevil: :drevil: :drevil:

Back to normal.

I remember it being very hard!

 That's kind of funny. Patrylo was one name I wasn't expecting to read in this forum. A guy I know on livejournal goes to SAS now, and he's always complaining about Dr. Patrylo. Well, actually I haven't read the name in awhile, but still.

How very cool and weird at the same time. heh
