Adventurland Veranda Open!

I always passed by this cart on trips, and finally decided to try one back in 2006...of course as soon as I wanted to get one the cart was closed on my trips.

The good news is, I finally had one back in January. The CM told me that they are open when the park is busier, but this was in relatively slow January, and I've been there during peak season and seen it closed, so I don't know if there's a set schedule for it to be open. Oh, and it was delicious, and a nice snack that's different from the usual WDW offerings (not that there's anything wrong with Churros and Dole Whips :slurp:).

The same egg rolls are offered in China in Epcot

I wish they would bring back the samosas they had at that cart as well. I used to love those little things. :slurp:

Because it saves money. It never used to be like that.
That is so sad. It would be so great to see more restaurants in a park that sorely needs them. I mean, let's face it, they're building a new one with the Fantasyland Expansion, so obviously there's a need that somehow isn't being met. Wouldn't it be a good idea to open one you've already got shuttered rather than build something brand new? Oh, wait...they can't theme those restaurants to princesses...:lookaroun

I really would appreciate more, unique offerings in the park and think that if Disney would offer them, in these shuttered places, they may be surprised.

Hmm, interesting. I was there at Easter last year and New Years this past year and didn't notice it as being open. I'm sure it was, it's just I always seem to notice when the other two are open, just surprised that I never noticed this.

It was definately open during Christmas 2009. I saw the doors open and ran over there to look, I had never seen it before and only heard about it from reading posts on this site. Seems like the main item on the menu was a turkey sandwich. There were some decorations in there for Christmas too, I think some were leftovers from many areas, I appreciated that they bothered to decorate at all inside from the short times that it is open.

I really don't understand why Disney hasn't turned rumor into reality in regards to making the Veranda home to a Pirates-themed character meal. I think girls would be just as excited as the boys would, but the park could really benefit with just a tiny bit more testosterone in their new offerings.

Especially with a new Pirates film coming soon, it would be a great way to draw attention back to the parks with another Pirates tie-in AND bring a shuttered restaurant back to life.

My daughter, as girlie as she is, would LOVE a pirate-themed meal.

It is unfortunately that such a large (and potentially profitable) piece of real estate remains closed so much. Hopefully they will start using this as more of an option since it really can be a help and provide a nice change to the Magic Kingdom dining options. They are obviously keeping the place in good shape based on the photos, and the ability to open the kitchen that quickly.

Do you think the kitchen is even being used? These menu choices sound like prepackaged meals made elsewhere.

I'm with the others who would like to see this space open year-round, possibly as a sit-down Pirates meal.

Has WDW just completely given up on food provided/prepared by themselves? It would seem that unless a restaurant has a tie in with a famous person or outside company, they haven't refurbed or rebuilt any eatery in like forever. In fact, about the only thing we have seen with any WDW run food venues are the shortening of menu selections and the removal of characters. Where is the "plussing" that WDW is famous for?

When it comes to food at MK or AK, its embarrassing the world's #1 travel destination has almost no ability to feed people on anything but a tray. AK tried to fix the obvious shortage of eateries by providing "bag lunches" under the auspice that it would be a "picnic in the park". The fanbois on this site embarrassingly ate it up as great idea about as much so as the Apple sheep thinking a $500 magazine reader is a great idea! :ROFLOL: I just paid $70 to get into AK and they offer me a bag lunch?? REALLY???? This isn't 6 Flags, its DISNEY...right?? MK is just full of counter service and the best sit down they had, Liberty Tree, they TOOK AWAY the characters. The food is good, but its Stouffer's quality (they do sponsor it!) for $30/person!

Then they changed the stools and experimented with this seating thing where you can't grab a table and instead have to be directed to one at the counter service eateries. Once again, here is WDW readily acknowledging the fact they can't feed people in a timely fashion because they don't have enough places. Yeah, people come in and sit down to get out of the sun, but that is not the core of the problem, its just helping it. After all Cosmic Rays is the 2nd busiest restaurant on Earth, but there still isn't enough eating capacity at MK.

Its obvious to the ongoing changes to the DDP that they aren't making enough margin on food. Therefore, they certainly aren't going to sink money into the restaurants they have now. We will just continue to see these temporary cafeteria quality food joints open up during peak time and then go right back to over capacity, no ability to get an ADR, and needing to plan on a meal outside of MK/AK if you want anything decent. Although I will say the Yak/Yeti was a welcome addition to AK, but even that is ran by a non-Disney company and is $16 for a plate of lo mein you could get at any take out place for $4. Or you can feel free to be even more gouged by Rainforest where I distinctly remember getting 3 drinks and nachos for $45! I know you are paying resort prices and everything is higher, but the Rainforest and T-Rex (owned by same companies) are insane!!

From what I've heard, the concept was VERY close to being a reality, with Disney executives even attending test meals in a mock-up restaurant. But the concept was dropped because it was discovered that the kitchens weren't large enough to accommodate table-service cooking. They considered expanding the kitchens, but the failure of the Pirate & Princess Party and the cooling off the Pirates franchise as a whole didn't made them lose interest.

Kinda crazy, isn't it? In the past decade or so, Disney has definitely gotten into outsourcing (manufacturing, Imagineering, AAs production, bus service), but recently it's even come so far as their restaurants...

That place is the only thing that makes me want to visit during busy periods! Used to be the restaurant my family always ate at when I was a kid. Last year when I traveled to WDW with my parents for the first time in years I asked them why we always ate there (while eating a Dole whip of course!). They said it was a great location (close to the Hub) and they always liked the theming more than the two QS in Tomorrowland just off the Hub.
Amazed how great it looks despite being closed so much.

I agree that opening up this place and The Diamond Horseshoe permanently just makes sense. I have never been to Disney when all of the restaurants were not swamped and I can not beleive that with the prices they charge for food that they are not making a profit. It does not make sense that all of these restaurants used to be open and now when you attract more visitors and larger crowds you close them for much of the year? Sometimes I think they forget that it makes a bad "show" to have empty or closed buildings all over the place. Like the Odyssey. I don't care if they use it for conventions it is just bad show to have a place that centrally located not open all the time.

I was at MK today and it was closed. The park was packed too. I was actually sort of surprised too since I was at the very least looking forward to getting to walk through the place. I thought it was interesting though since Steve said it was open until the 10th. Either way, something should really be done to make this place open full time. Something should really be done to a lot of these restaurants that serve as crowd eaters to have them open more often. Either get rid of them or keep them open, but don't waste the space by having them sit there for the majority of the year with nothing.

I would have been so excited to have seen this open 2 weeks ago when we were at the MK for the day. Even though it was wicked crowded for us that day, I guess we weren't at the peak of the spring break crowds.

I was pretty happy to get to eat at El Pirata y El Perico though since we never seem to be able to catch it while it's open. The place was a zoo though...

I really wish AL would get a little love. We seemed to spend a lot of time there that day just meandering around and people watching at night. The atmosphere at night was really nice as the crowds started to thin out. Speaking of snack carts though, I never noticed the cart with cinnamon glazed almonds. Sooo good! They weren't able to make them fast enough for the line that kept forming, we ended up waiting around 15 minutes for them.
