Trip Report Adventures in Disney-ing..The "it's on, off, and then on again" saga.

Howdy, folks. Hopefully, most of you know us. You've got: me, Dave, a late 30's father of 2 (for now). Then there's Amy, my wife of almost 15 years. You know her here as @Runmyhorse. Next, we have Ashley, our soon to be 16 year old daughter. Finally, there's Justin, our soon to be 15 year old son. This trip was basically planned as a birthday trip, as Amy and Ashley share February 25th as their birthday, and Justins birthday is March 6th.

Originally, we planned on a two week trip followed by attending the Dallas Walker Stalker on March 6th. That part was what Justin wanted as his birthday trip. However, the guest list didn't look that appealing and our budget had other plans. We had a room at Pop booked for this trip, as Amy insists on using Magic Hours, but that too took a hit.

So, we booked a room along 192 and had the rental car set to go. Well, some money that we had planned into the budget hit a snag and we knew we'd be tight on money. We went to pick up the rental via Alamo at the Memphis airport, and that's when feces hit the fan. On Thursday I had noticed that the confirmation email said that drivers with a TN, MS, or AR license were subject to a $150 deposit. We've always used Alamo because of their lack of a deposit hold. So I called their customer service to get confirmation of whether there was a hold or not.

They told me that there wouldn't be so I didn't plan that into the equation. So, come Friday we went to pick it up and the lady at the counter says there's a 150 dollar deposit. I tell her that the customer service says there's not supposed to be but she says it's their new policy. Well, I wasn't pleased, to say the least, but after a call to my bank and CC company, I had the funds available right there on the spot.

Let me just say that for some reason, the Alamo counter people at the Memphis airport location seem upset and have a bad attitude. Anyways, I went to get the car and we got upgraded from a standard SUV (Huyndai Santa Fe or similar) to a fully loaded Durango that was so new that they didn't even have the plates for it yet. That thing was BOSS. So, I get to the house and my wife tells me that the money that we had coming in wasn't in yet. So, our dilemma is as such: go and hope it's in by Monday or stay and just don't go.

Well, after some deliberation, we decided to be smart and not tempt fate. I called Alamo to tell then I was returning the car. They said they weren't going to charge me, as I didn't have it long and because they had mislead me about the deposit. So, back to the house it is. So, I hit the sack around 930 or so and I'm snoozing like Rip Van Winkle, when all of the sudden Amy wakes me up around 1am. The money is in.

So, I get up and get to cracking on securing another rental for a rate that isn't borderline robbery. Did I mention that the original rental was only 310 for 8 days? Not bad for a full size SUV. Well, after our little issue with Alamo, I decided that I will no longer use them or National, or Enterprise (their main brand). The cheapest I could find on 5 hours notice was a standard SUV with Avis for 384. So, I lock it in and made sure to ask about their hold policies.

We showed up at 530, their opening time, and got a Santa Fe. Unfortunately, we couldn't leave until after 12 noon, because my wife had already sold a treadmill to someone and they couldn't get there any sooner. So after rushing the preparation phase and eating and all of that jazz, we hit the road around 3pm central. Now, as some of you know(maybe, did I mention it?), Amy is pregnant again. So, the usual 12 hour drive turned into 14 or so, due to the stops.

We pulled into the hotel around 6am and I dragged my behind into the check in office. Our original booking was for Saturday and Sunday, but technically it was now Sunday so they only charged me for Sunday and no cash deposit. Sweet! We hit the beds and got a few hours of rest before heading to the parks.

First up, we went to Hollywood Studios. My main mission on this day was to meet Kylo Ren. So we headed directly to the new Launch Bay and made a bee line for Ren. It was only a 20 minute wait, but probably only took 15. Here's me and the kids with Kyle

I was pretty stoked, as I don't normally do photos with characters, but this was a must. Next, we headed to see Chewy:

Pretty darn cool. We checked out the offerings around the Launch Bay, and the kids decided they wanted a few of the custom costumes. Do you hear that, Powerball officials? By that time, it was time for us to hit Toy Story for our FPs. Well, I guess it had been down that day because the FP return line was about halfway to the restrooms. After about a 15 minutes wait, we were playing. I managed to get the best of the hour, with 271k, but I'm sure it didn't last long.

After that, we headed to the GMR, since Amy can't ride thrill rides and Ashley doesn't like riding them without her mom/ride partner. I don't know about you guys, but the new narration, opening movie scenes in the queue line, and the ending movie are just terrible. Plus, our tour guide was not good. She was very monotone and she didn't pause during any of her lines. She sounded like a grade school kid reading their book report in a hurry to be done.

Oh well, it sill beats being back home or at work. Ater that we decided to head off site for some lunch and then to the MK. I think it was around 530 or so when we got to the MK and they closed at 10. Let me just say that we should have been listening all of this time when people said to avoid the parks with EMH. It was so nice at the MK. I think we only had one wait over 20 minutes, and that was for Pirates.

While we're on the subject of that, they have taken a big #2 on that attraction. No mermaid projections(jumping water instead), the ship vs fort room SUCKS now. No cannonball air or splashes and they moved Jack's hands on the dress. I did like the addition of the burning smell through the town. After that it was time for our HM fps. I'm glad I had picked those, because the standby was 50 minutes. I still love this ride, but it's time for a nice lengthy refurbishment, especially in the graveyard scene, where you can clearly see the netting.

Next, we went to the Speedway, which was an absolute blast. After that it was time for the Peoplemover, but it was down. So, we jumped on Buzz Lightyear for some galactic action. When that was done, the wife and kids headed to Astro Orbiter while I spent some time with the CoP family. I absolutely love the Carousel of Progress, and if they ever get rid of it I will be using bereavement time at my job...

After that we headed to Dumbo to watch Wishes while flying, but it was down so we headed to the Jungle Cruise. We almost had a boat to ourselves, but they waited for more passengers. Not a bad trip, but the crowd wasn't really into the corny jokes. After that we headed to the Little Mermaid, followed by another round of Haunted Mansion. When we exited that, it was 10:07, so we figured why not catch the second parade, right? Man, it was so empty that our favorite spot was wide open. Here's where it gets hilarious and weird. As the parade is coming across the bridge from the Hub to Liberty Square, some older lady pushing her grandbaby in a stroller ran into my foot. She says sorry and then excuse me as if she's trying to go past me. Let me inform you that our spot is right along the railing at the corner by the flags. So, there's a rope on our left side and the railing on the right. So I'm thinking, where in the heck do you plan on going, lady? She tells her party that they're blocked in....ok....

They stay a few minutes and then leave, at which point we're just like, ? It was so nice to watch the parade with low crowds. I sure do love me some MSEP!

We headed out and I don't think it took hut maybe 20 minutes to be in the car and on the way off property. We stopped at Walmart for some stuff and then grabbed some food at Steak and Shake to take back to the room. That's about all for yesterday. I'll try to post today's adventure when we get in, but no promises. I'll post a majority of pictures when we get home, but now I've figured out how to post them here without going through a photo site, so I'll make sure to add some here and there. Thanks for following along, folks!

Following along,can't wait for more!
I will be there soon. Our favorite spot is across from where yours is because if someone tall is in front of me then I can just stand on the brick seat and not block anyone else! Kinda in front of HOP.
Have Fun!

So glad that you and your family managed to pull together a WDW vacation, despite some budget setbacks. From your past TRs, your family always seems to have a happy experience whenever you go to WDW (I always love the Halloween party pix that you've shared in the past, by the way! ) Looking forward to reading more trip highlights! :)

Yesterday we started with the Animal Kingdom. First up was our Fastpasses for the Festival of the Lion King. Man, we forgot just how good this show is! After that we headed to the Safari, which only had a 20 minute wait. I don't think there was a single animal that wasn't out, including those lazy lions.

Up next was Dinosaur, while Amy waited for us in the gift shop. I feel bad leaving her out of some rides, but the babies come first! After Dinosaur we hit the spinner ride before heading to the T&TC. We parked there and hopped on a monorail to Epcot. First up was Spaceship Earth, love that ride! Next, we headed to Japan so the teens could check out the anime selection. I love the Japanese people and their attitude and respect and happiness.

After that we trekked over to Mexico for a cruise with the Three Caballeros. The new animatronics look great! Next up was a Journey Into Our Imaginations. It's always hilarious to see the first time riders and their reaction to the "blast" at the end. We topped that off with a slow ride through the Land. I absolutely love Living with the Land.

It was time to head over to the Magic Kingdom. A short monorail ride later and we're there. Man, was it crowded! I grabbed some FPs for Pirates and we went looking for the Minute Maid Lemonade in a bottle for Amy, but they were nowhere to be found. So, we hopped on the Peoplemover and enjoyed the relaxing ride. Next we decided to take a cruise around the world, so IASW it was.

After that we headed to Pirates. Have I mentioned how much I dislike the changes they made? Next up was a Jungle Cruise. Our skipper on this voyage was pretty funny. We disembarked and grabbed some popcorn and took up a bench in front of the Tiki Room. After gobbling that up, we fought the crowds to make it over to Buzz.

The plan was to ride Buzz and head out before Wishes was over, in an effort to beat the crowds (we had to hurry to check in before they released our room). Well, I'm happy to say that we jussssst made it. Literally, had we been 2 minutes later we would have been stuck waiting at the bottom of the monorail ramp instead of 3 feet back from the chain.

We headed to our hotel and got booked in. Next, we shot over to Domino's and grabbed some delicious pizza. After we got back to the room we hit the sack.

I think we're going to start with the Magic Kingdom today and go from there. Again, thanks for reading and following along!

Enjoying the report. Those Powerball officials don't listen to me either.

Regarding Pirates: Are you saying that they permanently changed the Fort attack - no longer any cannonball and water splashes? Or was it just not on when you went?

Low crowds sounds great.

We've only been on it twice in two days, but the splashes and the air seem to be gone from the shots. Real bummer.

Yesterday was strictly Magic Kingdom for us. I might have neglected to tell you guys that we've been taking it easy these last couple of years. With the exception of a breakfast ADR at Crystal Palace in September, we've become accustomed to sleeping in. So, we got to the park around noon or so. Here comes my rant, so be warned.

The new and "improved" security check with metal detector. I hate it. What I really want to say about it would get me banned from this site that I love, so I'll leave it at "I hate it". Well, the first day I got "randomly" selected. I told my family, "that's one". The security lady asked me if I was keeping count and I said yep. Surprisingly, none of us got selected on the second day. However, yesterday, it was Amy that got selected.

She told the lady that she was pregnant and she didn't want to go through the detector. The lady told her, "it shouldn't hurt the baby". Hey look, we're not saying it's akin to standing next to an atomic bomb drop zone, but you're a security guard at a theme park, not Dr. Quinn medicine woman. So, after they wanded her I made sure to tell the 5 guards standing around that I felt much safer now that the pregnant woman had been screened. Their method is garbage, their process is garbage. I don't care what kind of argument anyone has, this is purely for show. Anyways.......

We headed to grab some new Fastpasses, as ours had expired. Have I ever mentioned that I hate the kiosks? Can we get an English only/know what you want kiosk please? No offense to my foreign tourist, we have plenty of Americans that hold up the line, but this process is junk. Or at least drop another billion and give us the option of picking a new one from our phones.

We headed to the Laugh Floor, and my oh my was it a great show. When Buddy Boyle picked this lady for the "guess the number" bit, hilarity ensued. She didn't understand anything he was saying so it was something directly out of a comedy skit. I think everyone in the audience was in tears from laughing so hard.

I think we went to Buzz next. I know the recent refurbished wasn't long, but to see 5-6 cars with tarps over them is sad. We also found out that the bottom targets on the volcanos no longer give 25k per hit. Of course, Justin maxed out and I barely did with my last shot on Zurg in the photo room. Next up was the Peoplemover. A nice relaxing ride on this is always what the doctor ordered. Did they refurbished or touch up the Progress City diorama, because it looks freshened up. Too bad they didn't fix the plane projection on it.

I believe our Fastpasses for Pirates were up next. Perhaps @marni1971 or one of the others can verify, but it seems that the removal of the cannonball air shots and splashes are indeed permanent in the ship scene. Bummer, that was my favorite part. But like I said before, I like the burning smell in the town scenes.
20160223_152450.jpg

After that, we headed to the Haunted Mansion. It's one of my personal favorites, with the exception of the funnel into the doom buggies. I never realized until this trip that the old lady in the rocking chair in the ballroom scene is from CoP. How about that...

Next was the railroad, something we missed on our last trip. So relaxing, and it felt good with the slight breeze flowing through. While waiting for the train at the Fantasyland depot, we saw a deer down the tracks. It's funny to me how people get excited about normal animals while at Disney World. Deer, squirrels and dogs....makes me chuckle. Any how, I think we went to the Little Mermaid after that. We really enjoy this ride.
20160221_214409.jpg

We checked out Tom Sawyer Island for a bit. It's been a couple of years, so we really enjoyed it. I always have a great time jumping on the barrel bridge. Plus, for the first time, I got to enjoy the single rocking chair behind the fort. Very relaxing.

We made our way back to the mainland and headed over to the Jungle Cruise. Had a pretty good skipper this time as well as a crowd that was into it.

Right around the time for the parade, we headed to Peter Pan. We were hoping that the parade would lower the wait time. Nope, not so much. After a good 45 minute wait, we finally took to the skies of London. At least we made friends with the couple behind us. They had such an energetic and cute little son.
20160223_194358.jpg

By the time we exited the ride it was almost 8:30. So, with our last 30 minutes we took a ride on the Peoplemover and a galactic trip to defeat the evil Zurg. Now it's 8:57 and time to head out. The monorail line...wow. It ran almost all the way back to the train overpass. So, we headed to the ferry, which was just pulling up. We get on, load up and....wait. The water pageant has to pass. Oh well, I would bet money that we still would have been waiting for a monorail.

We headed out and grabbed a bite at the golden arches. Is it just me or is the McDonald's across from Old Town the slowest place EVER? Seriously, there was nobody inside and only one car behind us in the drive thru and it still took 15 minutes. Anyways, back to the room we went and I bet I was asleep within 15 minutes. Thanks for continuing to follow along!

Just wait, I have another episode of the Security Games coming tonight.....

Oh goodie! Can't wait! :p By the way, I was surprised that they expected your pregnant wife to go through the metal detector screening. That was a bit too much, I thought. At least they backed off and just used the wands to scan, but they really need to reassess their criteria for metal detector screening.

Ok, so yesterday. As you know, we get late starts on the day. So after we grabbed a bite to eat for lunch, we headed to Disney Springs to get our Christmas ornament that we get each trip. This time we picked the little light up Cinderella Castle. We also struck up a conversation with Beverly, in the little shop that sells Precious Moments dolls across from the pin store. She said she's coming up on 25 years with Disney, so that was pretty cool. She also made us promise to come back in September and let her see our baby. She was really nice!
20160224_131650.jpg

After leaving Disney Springs we made our way to the T&TC to park. We hopped on a monorail to Epcot to spend some time there for a while before coming back to the Magic Kingdom.

After we departed the monorail and approached the no bag entry, I saw three security guards standing there and I was the first one to approach. I told the family, "I guarantee that I will be randomly selected". You guessed it, I was. He asked me how I was doing and I said yeah, fine. The second guy on the other end of the detector made me laugh. After emptying my pockets he told to to step back to the white line on the ground and walk through at a medium pace. So, you're telling me that your fantastic device meant to keep us all safe only works if I start from a certain starting point and walk at a certain speed? Awesome....

I decided to have a little fun with it and I told them that they made me feel safer. I then told the next 4 families and a handful of CMs that they should feel safer now because I had been searched. I promise you guys that I'm not a jerk or grumpy or anything, I just really, REALLY hate illogical things like this. So, in 4 days I've been selected twice and Amy once. That's 3 selections in 4 days. To me, random would be winning 1k bucks on a scratch off ticket, not a 75% selection rate at a place that sees millions of visitors a year.

Anyways, we're at my favorite park so I had to "let it go". Of course we headed to Spaceship Earth first, and it was enjoyable as always. Unfortunately, it couldn't locate our pictures for the postcard, but it happens sometimes. Next up was Nemo. I know they can't do anything with the first half of the queue, but is there not switchbacks on the second half? Seriously, it takes 5 minutes just to traverse the empty line.

When we disembarked, it was almost time for the dolphin feeding, so we stuck around for that. It was pretty cool. I took this photo because I couldn't help but laugh at the irony, given the buildings that are sitting around:
20160224_161021.jpg

Next up, we headed to Living with the Land. I could literally ride this thing non stop if they would let me. The opening chords as the ride begins give me chills. Anyways, it sure is strange seeing the Land pavilion so empty with Soarin being down.

We headed over to Imagination for some Figment fun. It's always enjoyable to see first timer's reactions to the ending. Next up we headed over to Mexico. Like I said before, I really like the animatronics on the Gran Fiesta Tour. After that it was time to head over to the Magic Kingdom, so away we went.

We couldn't believe how empty the parking lots were. The first sections on both sides weren't even halfway filled. We departed our Epcot monorail and jumped on a resort monorail, as the Express was down. Luckily, most people hadn't caught on and they headed to the ferry boats.

I think the first ride we did was Buzz. They really need to take this down for a while and give it the love that it needs. Next up was the Peoplemover. Another ride that I could ride nonstop if they'd let me. After that we hopped on the Speedway.

After that we jumped between the Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Mermaid and the Haunted Mansion. We are really enjoying this new style of relaxed vacationing.
