Adventureland Bridge

I was at the Magic Kingdom this past weekend and saw some construction going on at the bridge to Adventureland (right beside the Crystal Palace). I have not seen or heard anything about it lately on the forums and was wondering if someone could possibly elaborate on what they're doing?

It's completely walled off, and the water around/beneath it was somewhat drained. I saw a good view of it when I ate at the Crystal Palace with my folks and I have to say, it looked really nasty. :hurl:

They are making more handicap accesible. At least that's what I heard. Which makes sense it was built in '71 before all the rules on handicap stuff and it was kinda steep for wheelchairs. No idea when it will be completed though.

Yeah, the handicap accessibility was rumored, and probably true.

But it boils down to the Adventureland bridge being the last remaining 1971-era non-concrete bridge across the Hub waterways. All the others have been replaced in recent years (or are relatively new, in the case of the bridge behind the Christmas shop), and it was time for it to be done.

The bridge was one of the last remaining "non-flat" bridges. When the walls are removed it will be a flat structure. If I recall correctly the bridge next to it leading to crystal restaurant is still in the old style.

The Crystal Palace bridge was rebuilt last year.

Do you (or anyone else) know when this bridge was added? I'm pretty sure I remember using it in 2004 when the hub was flooding (quite an experience!) but I've never been sure when it was put in.

I'm sure someone (Martin?) can pin it down exactly, but I'm fairly sure it was sometime between 2000 and 2004.

Very nice!
And I will confirm the "handicap accessible" rumor. The new bridge is almost completely flat.

Yes! As a further confirmation:

No problem!!

I'll add also this photo, that shows some old torches that have been removed from the sides of the bridge, maybe for refurbishment:

The torches and gas lines are being removed. No word on whether they're being re-installed, which is doubtful.
