Abbreviations, Initials and Acronyms

Well, I suppose that list hasn't been fully updated then. Still, it doesn't change one's ability to understand the acronyms within the forum, thread or post.....

I'm glad it's been updated... But how would an acronym not being on the list you provided not change one's ability to understand said acronym?

It's hard to know why exactly why people use acronyms, but ascribing it "status" doesn't really fit the bill.

I think that status does have something to do with it whether users realize it or not. Using those acronyms displays knowledge of the community's special language. It's just as much about status as convenience, if not more.

So when people discuss RBI or ERA for baseball, they're showing off some sort of status? Or when they use TGIF, RIP or OJ, or even MTV in other conversations?

Every forum type has it's own abbreviations or acronyms they use. it becomes part of the common language there, and sometimes even outside of the forum (mention WDW and vacations and most people will know where you're going).

It's not some status issue. it's just a common lexicon that people here (and on other Disney boards) use. It's not worthwhile to try and apply other motives to the way people write....

I mentioned the same thing in the past.

Two reasons it happens.

People here think it is somehow cool to know this type of thing.

SSE means Spaceship Earth.... What you are not a Real Disney World fan if you can not guess this.

And people are too lazy to type.

Yeah, I do think it's the same thing: displaying slang savvy. Like I said, it's not necessarily intentional, it's just normal social behavior.

I can't imagine actually uttering the letters WDW instead of just saying Walt Disney World. It's twice as many syllables. Not really a spoken abbreviation at all. I also wouldn't expect my friends and family, who are not big Disney fans, to know what it meant if I were to say it.

The word you are looking for is acronym (eg Scuba, Laser, etc) What gets tossed around her a lot are called initialisms. (eg PotC, ToT, etc)

i hate the overuse of acronyms on this site. i've been a member of at least a dozen message boards over the years with a broad range of subjects.. and none of them used them the way this board does.

earlier tonight i saw someone use "MMY" in a post... so I thought about it for a few minutes.. checked the Acronym Dictionary and heyyy... it's not on there. none of the responses to the post helped out in any way.. after a while it occurred to me that i've spent more time trying to figure out it's meaning than was really deserved and moved on. but it's posts like that which ruin my enjoyment of reading an interesting thread.

for weeks i kept seeing the letters DH, DS, DD, and DW. now i deciphered that people were referring to their family members... but could never just figure it out. i was almost in a stupid rage when i read that the definitions were DEAR HUSBAND, DEAR SON, DEAR DAUGHTER and DEAR WIFE.

who the hell says that when actually referring to their family members?!?!? i'd rather read my "Immature Son", "Annoying Daughter", "Nagging Wife" and "Idiot Husband" :hammer:

so there.. those are the new abbreviations! LOL :p

I was told it stands for Disney Husband, Disney Daughter, etc. which is even more sickening.

Honestly, after posting here for a while the initialism trumps the full words in my neural pathways. I so seldom see Walt Disney World typed out on this site that to me the word has become WDW. It's not laziness or even the coolness factor that drives the initialisms since it has become more or less our language.

As others have stated, very few would actually spell out "runs battered in", and although it's usage may not be as wide spread but when I am typing, Tower of Terrow will always be thought of as ToT(example). Of course I would never say BatB verbally but my online lexicon would differ.

I'm just amused that this thread was started by "WED" Purist.
rofl lolz :D

All groups have jargon. This eases communication for regular users, makes it more difficult to follow for outsiders. These, however, usually pick up real fast.

Who here is confused by Tron, a road sign saying I-4, or EPCOT? They are respectively an abbreviation, initial and acronym.

Also, I think DH, DW, DD and DS is cute!

That really is funny

I've never thought of WED as an acronym, even though I know it is. I would never think to say that I work for Walter Elias Disney Enterprises. Some acronyms have been around so long that they become the only reference.
