Abbreviations, Initials and Acronyms

i hate the overuse of acronyms on this site. i've been a member of at least a dozen message boards over the years with a broad range of subjects.. and none of them used them the way this board does.

earlier tonight i saw someone use "MMY" in a post... so I thought about it for a few minutes.. checked the Acronym Dictionary and heyyy... it's not on there. none of the responses to the post helped out in any way.. after a while it occurred to me that i've spent more time trying to figure out it's meaning than was really deserved and moved on. but it's posts like that which ruin my enjoyment of reading an interesting thread.

for weeks i kept seeing the letters DH, DS, DD, and DW. now i deciphered that people were referring to their family members... but could never just figure it out. i was almost in a stupid rage when i read that the definitions were DEAR HUSBAND, DEAR SON, DEAR DAUGHTER and DEAR WIFE.

who the hell says that when actually referring to their family members?!?!? i'd rather read my "Immature Son", "Annoying Daughter", "Nagging Wife" and "Idiot Husband" :hammer:

so there.. those are the new abbreviations!
LOL :p

These are a carry over from another site, and I wish posters had left them behind. But that's why they are not listed on "our" site acronym dictionary, along with others. People make up their own abbreviations all of the time, or bring them here from other places. The fact that people use so many here could be a sign that we might be the "melting pot" of WDW fansites. ;)

I see those Dear Acronyms on some other non-Disney message boards communities too. I don't like them either. It's especially funny when people are complaining about their spouses and children but still use the DH, etc., monikers. I like to read those as "Damn Husband."

Those initialisms actually date all the back all the way to early BBS chat rooms (as does BBS. It means Bulletin Board System for those under the age of 40). They fall into the same ilk as IMHO, FAQ, LOL, etc. Annoying to a point, but they have become commonplace in internet conversations.

What do you suggest we do to eliminate/minimize acronyms? Ban any poster who uses them? Delete their posts? Edit their posts? Seriously, what would be the solution?

As I've already mentioned, people bring them with them, or just create their own. I would like to see some suggestions from those who are complaining about them.

I had never encountered DH, DD, & DS until I joined a few different Disney planning forums a couple of years ago, so silly me naturally assumed they stood for Disney Husband, Disney Daughter.... I actually thought it was cute.

nah.. no penalties. people should be able to post how they want.. but at least there was a thread like this that give the newcomers a place to vent about it and express our frustrations. my way of combating it will be to just type everything out the way i normally do in every day life.

typing out Carousel of Progress or Disney Hollywood Studio doesn't take me more than a couple of seconds and it keeps my brain working. "LOL" is all i'll really use. i'm on this board for my own enjoyment. so why rush through it??

i love reading the board... the GIRLFRIEND and i have been Disney enthusiasts for the past few years and getting all the backstage news and gossip has been fun for me.

it's just that coming across posts that read more like eye exams, to ME..kinda make the poster look a little silly and usually get skipped right over.

Or perhaps it's just easier for them to use common abbreviations that everyone know and accept?

really? how much easier?

how much time was saved? really.

i sincerely think there's more to it than just somebody trying to save time or make it easier. it feels a little more like a status thing.

:goodnevil <--hahah. i just noticed this little guy.

It's hard to know why exactly why people use acronyms, but ascribing it "status" doesn't really fit the bill. Perhaps they're typing a long post and acronyms help make it a little less burdensome. Or perhaps they know that within the forum/thread that using one will not make their message any less well understood. Or perhaps, yes, it is just easier for them. But considering how widely used acronyms are across the board in any number of discussions (and discussion boards), saying they're a "status" issue doesn't really hit the mark.....

400%. You save by 900% typing KS vs. Kilimanjaro Safaris.:drevil:

I do have to do a little "mental readjust" when an acronym used is one that I use frequently in real life (IRL) for something completely different.

My first thought when reading FL is Florida, not Future Land, for example, since it is part of my address.
