If anyone on these forums knows my posts, I am typically a positive poster regarding WDW. I have no nostalgia coloring my impression of today's WDW as I only started visiting in 2009.

Well, this won't be that kind of post. We went to the MK today after the rain stopped and it was crowded, and it was filthy. It looked like a huge dumpster tipped over and trash just blew everywhere. The FP line for Buzz had trash and garbage all through the line. Tomorrowland was a mess in general to the point it was shameful. I would have been embarrassed if I had brought someone there for there first visit and saw this. Also, you could smell the bathrooms in Tommorowland from about 50 feet away. We were sitting at the Launching Pad having a drink and there was litter everywhere. The cast members with the dust pans that walk around were there but they were barely trying. You could also see guests just placing garbage on the ground - when there was a trash can 20 feet away,

Then we went to Frontierland and got on the FP line for BTMRR...

How's that look for the most magical place on Earth?

Oh, let us not forget what I found on the monorail for the trip back to the Poly...

Disgusting is all I can say.

It is a shame that the cleanest, most enjoyable part of our trip thus far has been our resort (Poly), and our time spent in DS. You can tell the parks are not staffed or managed appropriately for crowds. I hope that Chappie is serious about having this resort run better. This is supposed to be Disney's flagship resort, and the MK was appalling today. They need to get their act together in Orlando. We throw a lot of money around in the swamps, and we are also DVC members. But I will tell you this; I won't continue to if this is the state that the parks are in when I am visiting. It is a shame too, because as I said above, the deluxe resorts are still very nice. And what they have done in DS is tremendous. We spend so much time there now, and it is clean and the restaurants are excellent. I am also looking forward to the expansions and new lands and rides that are coming to all of the parks. But why should we keep coming if the parks end up looking like the MK did today? What a disappointment.

You know, I went to DLR for the first time for Memorial day and had the same experience you did in WDW ... it was incredibly filthy, so it's definitely not an Orlando thing...

Unfortuantly I would say more blame rests with guests than cast for this. The overflowing trash can should have been emptied earlier, but leaving your rubbish on the monorail is a guest issue. People should always be taking waste with them until they find a bin to put it in.

It's a combination of poor Guest behavior and not enough staffing due to budget cuts. The cast members are tired of getting shafted so they start to not care. Then the ones that do care are left to literally clean up the mess left behind and a handful of people can't keep up with thousands of people. All queues on property are owned by the attractions themselves. So if they are dirty, it isn't custodial.

Yes, part of the problem is the guests themselves that leave their crap behind- but why are there not attendants checking the monorail before people board, to make sure that the trash is picked up (or, they could pick up) and no children were left behind, etc.

It seems like Disney has reduced staffing to the point of "DGAF" attitude- the remaining staff are overwhelmed and therefore, shut down. It happens in offices regularly- one worker is now doing the job of three, none of them very well, and eventually, shuts down.

I'm not saying you're wrong- you are absolutely right, in fact, guests need to be held accountable for their belongings and trash- but when the behavior is not corrected right away, and one guest sees trash, notes the trash in their hand, then shrugs and thinks "well, if that's trash, why should I hold mine" and dumps it. Thus, the pile grows. It's a snowball affect, for sure.

Slightly unrelated from your post (which is eye opening) but- how are the crowds? How is the Polynesian- are there a lot of people about? Folks on the beach? Crowd levels at the MK--long waits for refreshments/quick service?

I posted about this in the crowd levels thread. Short answer - the crowd level in the MK on the day I took those photos was ridiculous. Wait times through the roof for just about every ride except for tea cups and the carousel. And the mob for Wishes was simply the worst I had ever witnessed. The entire hub was full - inner and outer rings. The crowd went all the way back to the the train station (and I am not exaggerating that).

And oh yes, there was also this...
image.jpeg

Either 1) this guy loves pink backpacks, 2) this is the in-park theft of the century, or 3) the tour groups are back. And the correct answer would be 3, and they were everywhere. No singing or chanting, though, which was good.

As far as the Poly, it is beautiful; probably my favorite resort to walk around now that the construction is at an absolute minimum (they are working on long house supports on a few buildings so it is not visually intrusive. I only stayed there once with the fountain so I had zero attachment to it. I think the lobby with the new lighting is beautiful. And the entrance with the two water features on either side is the best entrance to any resort on property. The grounds are just lush with greenery and the tiki torches all lit up at night. I don't find the bungalows to be the abominations that others do either. In fact, the hill that rises above them has some benches, new trees, and offers a great view of the fireworks and to me is a beautiful little area. Also, the completely revamped pool area that used to be the quiet pool is wonderful.
image.jpeg

There are three gazebos that you can sit under on couches, chairs - a very relaxing spot.

The beach from the GF to the Poly is now almost completely transformed into a rocky shoreline in between the fence and the water. There was hardly anyone there. My wife and I watched the fireworks there alone on a swing.
image.jpeg

I don't find that the fencing detracts from anything, and I actually think that the rocks make it look nicer.

This was one of the points I was making with the original post. The Poly is gorgeous, the staff nice and acommodating, and it feels appropriately staffed. The MK just gave off a vibe yesterday that was completely the opposite - dirty, packed and with a staff that in no way was organized to maintain this type of crowd level. It was a bad experience at their flagship resort. I hope they figure out this mess.

The 'Broken Windows' effect, And yes the Staff has been cut to DGAF levels which leads to the lovely situation we see today, As to the trash barrels there are now fewer of them further apart, Remember Disney did studies on how far guests would carry trash but because of purely financial drivers Disney is ignoring their own studies so fewer custodial CM's are needed to empty the trash receptacles.

WDW is at the point where senior leadership simply needs to be fired enmasse and replaced.

If they paused the monorail at every station to clean it then it would cause delays and queuing as they couldn't run the trains as frequently. I don't think this is something that was ever really done by Disney. I guess maybe at off-peak times during the day they could have a cleaner board the monorail and clean but most of the time they would wait for the train to come back out of service.

I agree that once one family leave trash it encourages more to do it, but I was taught by my parents to put my litter in a bin, its a shame no everyone is raised as well. If everyone needs someone to follow them round and pick up their litter then something has gone wrong with the world.

My favorite is Animal Kingdom Lodge. So far the only Deluxe I've stayed in.

As much as people are gross and have no manners about picking up their trash, I put the blame solely on Disney. It is THEIR park, and its a problem that can be fixed, but they choose not to fix it. They are aware of the problem. Its blatently obvious that they are not concerned with their guests having a premium experience, even though they paid a premium price.. And yes, enjoying a clean park should be part of that experience.

If you have friends/family coming over for a party, do you not clean up your house if its a bit messy? You want your guests to have a good time. And when the parties over, you have to pickup the cups and clean the dishes. Do you blame your friends and get upset about it? More than likely, if youve ever thrown a party or had a big gathering at your home, your aware that there will be some clean up involved and your not upset about doing it. Regardless of how disrepectful guests are, Disney knows that they will throw their trash wherever, yet they choose to let it be an eyesore rather than be preventitive. Just another clear cut case of how they dont care about your experience overall , as long as your paying and there are a few E tickets operating, thats what they feel you deserve for your money.

The world is a crazy, scary place. So are it's people.

Maybe an easy solution would be to put litter bins on the monorails. Not an option that I'm crazy about, but if it's down to that, or having the trash on the ground (creating a potentially dangerous situation- what if Grandma is en route to Epcot via monorail, doesn't realize a plastic bottle is underfoot, steps on it and falls... then what? Are they waiting for lawsuits to fix an otherwise easy problem?) I'd rather see a discrete bin than garbage. IMHO.

For what it's worth, the stops at the resorts should already be enough time to give a quick glance in each cabin. Of course, an extra body or two would certainly expedite this and it would be quicker and more efficient- but we know they are not staffing to the numbers they should be.

Not sure if its ever been discussed but does all the new Government regulations on taxes and employess with healthcare play a role in the cutbacks of CM's? Is Disney saving a few bucks on taxes or what not by cutting back staff?

Im sure the recent management layoffs in Anaheim, which are almost sure to come to Orlando, are a result of the Presidential clarification on what the Overtime exemption floor should be. Going up to near $50k or you have to pay OT. Today, they work the GSMs like dogs for $30k. That will be a huge hit to ops.

The requirements for non-exempt status have changed as well. It isn't just salary level, but certain "types" of jobs are no longer exempt anymore, even if they reach the (I think) $47,000 salary threshold. While this wouldn't necessarily effect management, as they would have the job description if they made the salary requirement, but it will probably effect some other types of jobs (specialized maintenance, engineer, trade job types that make decent money).

Sorry....meant to say that I think most of the status changes go into effect in December.

Disgusting is right. I'm off to bed now (maybe I'll post more about this later), but my thoughts are that there may be more trips to the swamps by people that stay on $DIS property that may not include any park time, including non-DVCers. Why spend a week in filthy parks when you can just do a long weekend at AKL and just enjoy that resort. Save money as well as time (time may be more valuable to some in the business world).

I know I've done that a couple of times being DVC just a couple relaxing days at the resort.

In times past they used to run a broom and/or swiffer quickly through the cars before they opened the doors for loading it took perhaps 20 sec per car and there was a CM in each car doing it but there were more CM's on the platform in those days as I recall
