A Mug Question?

My DD is getting married in May and will be using our DVC points to stay at the WLV for their honeymoon.:sohappy: The last time we stayed there as a family was in January of ‘07’. We always buy a set of refillable mugs when we stay at a new resort in WDW, and then we keep them in the bar in our family room as a memento. We’ve never stayed at any one resort twice to date and I’m curious about something:

1. How often does Disney change the pattern on the mugs at the resorts?

2. What would be wrong with the kids throwing a couple of mugs in their suitcases for the trip?

3. If they look the same as when we were there the last time, who would know right?

I remember what life was like when we first got married, every penny counted...and still does! Right now my DD lives at home until their wedding day, but come May 30th they’ll have college loans, a home mortgage, utility bills etc…

I’m just curious…thanks for your replies.

From what I've seen recently, Disney just introduced a new mug for the new theme.

As far as packing some old mugs for the trip to use while down there, it is against the official rules. Many people choose to bring their old ones down anyway. Does that make them horrible people? According to some here, yes. Knowing it is against the rules, I personally wouldn't do it. But if you choose to do it, that's none of my business, and Disney doesn't seem too worried about it. I don't really know of them making much of an attempt to enforce the rule. I've even had CMs tell me it's okay to reuse old mugs and others have been told the same thing. But as far as "who would know", since your old mugs wouldn't match the current mugs, then anyone with a good eye would know. LOL But again, I've never known of the the staff to be overly concerned with cracking down on mug offenders, so I doubt anyone would say anything.

If you feel funny about sending them down with two mugs, or if you think they would feel funny...then perhaps you could send them a gift basket from the Disney Florist and include two mugs as souvineers from their honeymoon. I don't know the link to the Disney Florist, although I have used them a few times.

When we were on our honeymoon...way back in '95 my parents had a basket sent to us. It had 2 mugs, 2 mickey wine flutes, a bottle of champaigne, cheese, crackers, and a variety of chocolates. A package like this would probably set you back $50-$75 depending on what you put in it.

Just a thought! As sbkline pointed out, they don't really have "soda police" monitoring the stations, although they do have CM's keeping it clean and stocked. Our last trip we saw people refilling a whole variety of cups and mugs...ones from inside the parks, esp. those big bottles from AK, and from other parks!

Disney now changes the mugs once a year because they are the same throughout each resort. What you are basically talking about here is a question of ethics that has been debated over and over again on this website. The mugs are supposed to be used for the length of your stay only. Once that stay is over, they are not supposed to be used again. However, this does not mean that you can't use an old mug from a previous visit. If the mug looks the same (which they won't at this point because the new mugs were just released) then obviously no one would be able to tell. If the mugs look different or are from a different resort, then a cast member might notice. I have never seen a cast member care though when someone is filling up an old mug or one from another resort.

So the question here isn't what can you do...it is what you personally think you should do. Like I said, everyone on this forum will give you a different answer (and that is why I won't even say what my feeling on it is).

Just entirely out of curiosity, does anyone know if there is a button on the registers for "refill" or something...for those who bring an old mug and want to pay for their drink? Or would it just be the price of whatever size drink would fit in the mug? I know when I was working at McDonald's, there was a button on the register for a 25 cent refill for people who brought a McDonalds mug in, rather than charging a full 52 cents for a small coffee. I've often wondered if Disney has something similar to that for people who bring their own mugs.

We'll be getting the new mugs as well. But I am not as thrilled with them. I wish they were a bit more "Walt Disney World" vs. just the characters. I really miss the resort specific mugs.

Disney actually does care that people use old mugs, thus this new UPC program which will prevent people from using old mugs. Does any one know when that is supposed to start?

I'm fine with the UPC system. In fact, I think they should allow you to buy "renewable" UPCs for future trips. For instance, since they still had YOAMD mugs last week, it would have been nice to pay say $10.99 to renew a UPC on our YOAMD mugs from last year than to have to buy the same mugs over at $12.99.

The rumor of the UPC system has been around since I think I have joined the forums. In all honesty, I don't think I see it happening for quite some time (if it ever happens).

It is my understanding that they only use the UPC system at the water parks.

I don't even know how well it works at the water parks. Last summer we were at WDW for 2 full weeks in July/August. We did several days at the water parks. We saw several groups of people sharing one mug. Some people brought in hotel paper/plastic cups and then would scan their cup, fill it up, dump the soda into other cups, rescan and refill. Which was a big pain in the neck for those of us just wanting to fill our mug and go. If I remember right we paid $5 for a new UPC sticker at the water parks.

Seriously? Sheesh - why would anyone do that?? I know Disney will allow you to bring your own food/ drink into the regular parks - can you bring your own drinks into the water parks? If so, why would you "cheat" the system that way? If you think the price is too high - just bring your own!

oldshovelhead - The answer to #3 is this: You would know. Your daughter would know. Your soon to be son in law would know.

As for question #2 - As a parent there are a few things I want to teach my children, one of those being integrity and honor. I can only speak for myself here, but I wouldn't want to send my child off on a trip and ask them to check their conscience at the door over what amounts to less than $30.

I think I'd do what Dwarful suggested and send them a nice gift basket with new mugs or a gift card to cover the costs. (It's got to be a whole lot cheaper than what the cake is costing you!!!!)

PS - What a great Honeymoon to give them!

I know people like to collect the mugs (I did when they were resort specific), but I have 9 YOMDs mugs. I think it would be great if Disney could make these so they could recycle them for new mugs. This way repeat visitors (or people who don't want the clutter) could "recycle" our old mugs and get a discount on a new one.

I know I can toss it into my local recycling bin, but who knows whether it'll actually be recycled into something? (I also admit to rarely throwing anything Disney away....)

Disney's "public" policy is that the mugs can be used during the entirety of your stay. The official policy enforced by CMs is that guests can use whatever mugs they have and are not to be approached if using a different mug. There is no UPC scanning at any of the resorts. So bring your previous mugs if you want. Disney neither encourages or discourages their use.
