A funny thing happened to me on the DVC tour...

"I would be nice if you would stop telling people how they have wasted their money (paraphrased). Because it does not work for you and you like the value resorts, is no reason to imply we are tossing our money out the window. We are not and we like it there, besides we get a tiny write off each year."

I NEVER said that it was a wste. I simply said DVC would not make sense for ME and for others. For some, it does make sense. I wasn't pointing the finger at anyone in particular, I was just saying that there are some DVC members who basically say that anyone who takes more than 1 trip to Disney in a year and is not a DVC member, is a fool. Personally, I resent that.

OK, as a DVC member since 2000 - NO, it is not for everyone.

Yes, it has saved me money and allowed me to take vacations I could never have taken without it.

Yes, it reverts back to Disney, but the way I use it, I will get all of my money's worth and then some.

The rooms - well, you obviously have never stayed in the 3-bedroom at SSR or in the Beach cottage at Vero. I slept to the sound of the waves. And HHI is a magnificent resort.

"Another disadvantage of DVC to me was the fact that it was a constant finanacial liability. Without it, if I can't afford to stay at Disney I can just not go. With DVC, you still have to pay that monthly "mortgage" and maintenance dues. Selling it would just be an added headache if I had financial problems."

VERY good point indeed.

I would resent that also. I, however, don't like my DVC being bashed as an unsound investment.

Besides, Corrus has WDWmagic protection. From what I've seen, he's in the WDI Protection Program for Disney Forum Users. You can't go against him... it's just not right. :) LOL
HUH???

I haven't got any protection from WDWMAGIC... I'm nothing more than you guys... I only hate people who treat people disparaging...

Greetz! :D

Jeez, I would be careful how I spoke to Corrus. People have been known to disappear for less.

I'll stick up for our new member here. I think he has shown in this thread that he is here to add constructive comments and isn't making argument for its own sake. Strong opinions from a new poster aren't a sin. I think the trend of labeling people right out of the gate has gotten a little wacky around here of late.

Many of the salespeople there are DVC owners themselves. We had to move our tour up a day because our DVC tour guide was going on a vacation that just came in through her points on the day we were going to take the tour. I never heard any BS from anyone while on tour. It was the best decision we made. We're using our points to go to Disneyland this year to be part of theri 50th anniversary.

Agreed. Personally, I wouldn't do that.

With many things regardings Disney World, I have strong opinions. I love the place and everything (for the most part) about it.

DVC is just something else that I like to discuss.

Good analogy - My boss is a DVC member. Stays at the Boardwalk whenever he goes. For him, for the money he makes and the way he likes to spend his vacations, GREAT investment. For me, for the money I make, and the way I like to spend my vacations, it would be a bad investment. Now, maybe in 5 years, if I'm making more money and grow tired of the Value Resorts, I may reconsider.

Please understand - When it comes ro DVC, I have a VERY open mind. I've ordered the videos, gone to the presentations, and talked to reps MANY times. I always feel as though maybe there is a something that I am not fully grasping. But as I take the info I receive each time, sit down and carefully how it would work (FOR ME AND MY FAMILY) it just hasn't made sense - Yet.

For the record - Considering I like to go to Disney as much as I possibly can, I wish it did and someday hope that it does.

I know I'm coming in late here but I was just wondering how the DVC is considered an invesment? At the end of your "time" aren't you left with nothing? Just asking. I looked into the DVC and I personally didn't like the commitment. I also enjoy taking other vacations each year besides Disney vacations. I know, how could I. Plus, the last few trips down, we've opted for renting a house, which in MY situation has been a no brainer. We've discussed purchasing one of these rental homes. To me owning a rental home would be an investment.

Disclaimer: The above statement in no way passes judgement on the DVC or it's members or non-members. :D

Wow... I'm a big gun?

Sweet.

In regards to the DVC, I don't know much about it. However, I HAVE enjoyed reading this thread and the information that it has provided. I currently have plans or desires to join (My home is 45 minutes from Disney, so there is no reason to stay on property), but if the future makes it a feasible route I might consider it. This thread has allowed me to gain some information that I wouldn't have thought to look for otherwise.

As far as the bickering goes, I think people are getting a little too trigger happy. I know that we have been having a rash of trolls, but that does not mean that somebody who has a little bit of a bite to their posts, or disagrees is here to cause trouble. We have to remember that Disney is something that the boardmembers feel VERY passionately about. That passion can sometimes be misconstrued because of the emotional limits placed by the internet. We need to remember that. We need to give new posters (especially passionate ones) a change to PROVE themselves without the threat of them being labeled "trolls" at the drop of a hat. I think EVERYBODY needs to cool down with this whole troll thing. We need to stop condemning new members who have something to say.

We have a reputation of being one of the friendliest boards on the internet... let's keep it that way. Please.

I've been a regular visitor to WDW since the late 1970's. I normally go down for 3 or 4 trips a year and stay for a week or two on each trip. I've looked at the DVC since it first started in October, 1991 in the hope it might save me some money. Unfortunately, for a long term regular visitor such as myself, a DVC membership would end up costing me more money than just taking advantage of the regular and ubiquitous resort discounts.

The DVC can not be considered a good financial investment. An investment in the family, yes. A "forced" vacation account, yes.

Corrus you haven't actually added anything to this conversation and your behavior has been over the top. Lets try to show some respect to new members and get to know them before we start yelling.

joviacdan I appreicate your trying to understand DVC, it can really be a lot to swallow. DVC has allowed us to make many more trips then would have with out it. (and now the new AP discount even more!! :p ) I think many people who feel it is for them are families with young and growing children (or grandchildren.) But then again many single and couples love it too! DVC gives you the comfort of a house, but convenience of being on prop in a Deluxe resort.

As I already said on this thread pages back that DVC is more like investing in a car then a house. As you get use out of it, it will deprericate in value some. (even though it hasn't so far, it keeps going up really.) There is some upkeep invovled. I feel it is an investment in myself, my family and our time and vacations together. Do you think you will still have the same car you have now in 40 years? Will you continue to get use out of it for a full 40 years? Most new cars cost more then DVC and cost more then dues to keep up. (Yes I know you need a car to work, don't NEED DVC.) At the end of 40 years, what do I have? 40 Years of unforgetable vactions? Worth it to me.

For anyone who has only stayed at a studio at OKW, that isn't the best example of DVC. I wasn't as impressed with a studio at OKW as the other resorts (the 1 and 2 bedrooms are different stories.)

The car analogy is a good one. When you buy a new car and drive it off the lot, the value of the car depreciates by at least 20%. With a DVC membership, if you attempted to sell it a day after you bought it, you'd get back less than 50% on the dollar and it continues to go down in value because there is no fee simple title.

Exactly. It's not a monetary investment. It's an investment in your family!:sohappy:

PHD,
Would you mind telling me how many points it is for an Ocean View studio at Vero?

I could go find the book they sent me when I requested the video, but I don't know where it is.

It ranges from 10 to 13 points per night Sun-Thurs and 23 to 33 per night Fri-Sat. We stayed there in May from Sunday to Friday for a total of 50 points (equivalent to about $250). Points well spent and very relaxing.

Hmm, yeah, see for that, itd be worth it, since I paid $290 a night for a weekend Ocean Studio rate at Vero

I have not labled anyone and I just told him to be careful, no harm in that.
Also, you are right, strong opinions are not a sin. I have no problem with that.
