I think that's more "leave for the day"...if you plan it out correctly, I can see the advantage in that. I don't think it's ever "I'm so hungry...we have to leave"

There are a lot of variables at play here. Sometimes I'll be OK with QS or a snack in the parks, and other times I'll leave to eat and then go to another park. That's mostly UO -> Disney or Disney -> UO though. If it's close to the time to leave, maybe a snack in the park and then something along the route home.

Definitely agree that it's never "I'm so hungry...we have to leave" though.

If you don't have a reservation and you're starving, you're probably going to have a snack in the park, settle for QS, or hop to a resort with TS availability anyway so leaving to eat isn't that much different really.

For all the people who leave the park to eat off property.. do you ever think about the time spent while doing so?

I’m not being snarky at all.. genuinely curious. My time is valuable, convenience outweighs saving a few dollars sometimes. Especially when I have so many dining options within walking or monorail or boat distance.

If we’re staying off property, it’s convenient to grab something along the way, there or back.

That may include an afternoon park break.

There were times we would intentionally do that to justify a planned splurge meal another night on property.

Yay! Pass prices go up and they continue to give you less for your money! Way to go Disney!!

Technically it’s the same as it was before the promotion. And my spending on dining will also return to the pre-promotion level, which was very little. Hopefully a lot of APs follow suit and they’ll notice a dip in profits.

But that’s just wishful thinking.

I’m just glad the merchandise discount is still 20%. Using the app we don’t have to pay tax and that pretty much feeds my wife’s Donetsk and Burke addiction.

I always pick a resort where I know I’ll like the food..If I’m there for a few days or more. We ate a late dinner when arrived at All Star Sports in November, once in their QS was enough for me. I didn’t even get coffee in the morning bc I didn’t want to deal with the madness..waited until we got to AK to eat and get caffeine. The smart thing would have been to drive thru McDonalds for a quick sandwhich and coffee to tide us over on the way...especially the coffee to bring me into the land of living until I could get another at the park

The closest normal McDonald is probably the one right off the corner off sherberth/entry point road.

But if you go that way it is worth it to hit Chick-fil-a and have almost real food rather than McD's

Chuys on 192 has free food m-f happy hour 4-7. Chips, ground beef, refried beans, nacho cheese dip and salsa. You just have to sit in bar area and pay for drinks. We make a meal out of it at least once on our trips. Culvers on 192 is excellent inexpensive food- butterburgers and frozen custard-delicious! We usually drive there for lunch or dinner on our Animal Kingdom days- take Sherberth rd to 192- super quick

Cracker Barrel, IHOP, Chick-fil-a, even Dunkin. Yeah, there are a few ok options over there that are all better than McD.

Merchandise has MUCH higher margins than food and no capacity issues. No additional staffing is potentially needed to support the additional benefit. They lose a bit on margins unless the increase in sales from passholders is huge but as a "marketing cost" for pass sales, the extra 10% is much more palatable on merchandise than on food.

Looks like there is no longer an AP or DVC discount at the resorts for consumables, like groceries. We used to get that discount at all resorts, but it may have changed for 2018, as it's in the "Excludes" wording on the Passholder site now - 'pantry/prepared foods'. "Squeeze guests a little harder, there are still a few pennies to be wrung from them!"

Edit: I did find the wording in the 2017 'Excludes' list, but we were still getting the discount last year so maybe it's been gone longer?
