8 Planets

Well I'm happy. I didn't like having Pluto as a planet anyway. The crazy orbit, the size, its out of plane. Plus, since there are other larger "planets" in that belt, we'd have to keep adding.

Keep it at 8 now

What's this solar system coming to? It's hard to find good planets! Who's idea was it to count Pluto to begin with? Stupid micro-planet.

And don't get me started on Pluto the dog.... You don't see as much of him anymore? Has Mickey finally realized that if Goofey can walk and talk, he doesn't need the other dog? (Goofey is a dog isn't he?!? :veryconfu)

Actually guys, we don't have 8 planets... we now have 12... @_@ I KNOW! SO WIERD!

Anyway, I'll explain. Because technology in space has been expanding over the many years, scientists have been finding other objects in space further than Pluto, and also right in the middle of our REGULAR Solar System that we never noticed before. Allow me to show you a picture:

http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20060819/a7595_1602.jpg

In this picture, you will notice the addition of 3 planets (Charon, Ceres, and 2003 UB313, also known as Xena) They have decided that based on the facts that scientists have uncovered, they must now create "sub-categories" for planets. Pluto and Charon are very strange because they are actually a "double planet" because they travel together in that odd orbit that intersects with Neptune's orbit. Those two planets, as well as Xena, are known as "Icy Plutons" and Ceres (between Jupiter and Mars) is the current lone member of a group known as "dwarf planets"

So there's the scoop folks. Kids won't just be learning about our 8 Planets, they'll be learning about our 12 Planets, and the sub-categories of planets inside them. HOW CRAZY IS THAT! Now I know how old people feel when their grandson or granddaughter says something to them they don't know, and realize it was discovered AFTER they got out of school, and they had no idea, so it just makes them look old and stupid... @_@

You're a few days late Icicle, what you're describing was put forth about a week ago, but its been overturned AGAIN, with this new "Dwarf Planet" status. :hammer: Hard to say if this will actually stick or not this time!

Technically there are 12 planets, but legally there are 8.
Ceres, Pluto, Charon, and 2003 UB313 are called what was formerly known as "minor planets" .

I think a Broadway musical and/or film should be in the works pretty soon about this whole fiasco. Wow. And what a production it would be! Intrigue! Drama! Hullabaloo! Threats! Scams! Blackmail! One astronomer against the other. Rancor! Downgrading! Misery! Woe! And a witty joke thrown in here and there. Planetary humor, you know... :lookaroun
