I went to the movies yesterday. I didn't realize it till just a few minutes ago, but in the change I got for the ticket was a 5 dollar bill from 1950.

I know there are people out there who collect coins. Is there anyone out there that collects dollar bills too? I'm wondering if it is worth more than 5 dollars?

Anyone?

If it's in relatively reasonable condition, you might be able to get a small premium on it. But if it isn't, well then, maybe not. But I'm not very good with bank notes. ;)

I'd say check with a local coin store. I'm guessing it to be worth no more than $5.25 or so, who knows. My girlfriend (Ditzeechick02) works at a bank and she showed me the new $50 bill that just came out and it's awesome. It's going to be really hard to counterfit this one. It's got a lot of red, white and blue colors in it and is more American than what we've got now. I can't wait to have one in my wallet. (checked everything I had today and it was all of the old 100's and 50.) It's rare that we even see the 20's from 5 or so years ago, before the redid all of the bills.

It may be worth more than $5 if it's a "Silver Certificate" as opposed to a "Federal Reserve Note." Check to see what's written on the top.

1950? Ancient, huh? :)

I have a few Silver Certificates...are they worth anything?

(My grandfather always says, "DON'T SPEND THEM!" )

I don't have any of my old money handy (I'm at work), but if you look at your Silver Certificates, and if you have any bills pre-1960 or so, you'll notice that the "statement" (from the US treasury is different than what has been put on there after 1965: "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private" as opposed to pre-1960: "This note is redeemable ... (I can't remember the statement)"

Why you ask?

That is when the United States went off the gold standard. The gold standard would be where each bill of any denomination is backed up by gold. IE: You could go into a bank (back then), and turn in your silver certificate or $10 bill, and receive the same amount back in actual silver.

Back then, and even before that, that was the real reason for Fort Knox, and keeping the US's precious metals. Fort Knox is the country's "safety deposit box." (For gold and silver anyway)

And that is your history lesson for today.
