5 Days at Disney World, 12 Days to Plan, 3 Resorts and 1 Broken Leg

When – Saturday November 17th- Thursday, November 22, 2012

Where – Animal Kingdom Lodge, Old Key West and Saratoga Springs

Who – Just the 4 of us this time! Myself, Stephen my hubby, Chase 17 and Ally 15. Since it was just the four of us, I somehow neglected to get a single photo of us together! I think there are only three of them with myself even in them! So here we are in parts.

Why – Well because we wanted to of course. :D But why Thanksgiving week, one of the most crowded weeks there is? Well there were several reasons. For one, it’s tough to find a time to go these days that works for all 4 of us. I can go anytime, of course, and I do! :) But the teenagers and hard working hubby are harder. We had rooms booked for President’s Day weekend, but the kids had a lot of conflicts. Also, we had nothing to do for Thanksgiving. About 12 days before we left, I got an airfare alert for $176 flights to Orlando.

So what do you do when you don’t have anything to do for Thanksgiving and you can fly to Orlando cheaply? You go visit the mouse of course!! We go enough that the crowds don’t bother us much, so it seemed like the perfect solution.

The kids were more than game, and Stephen cleared it with his work. We bought the tickets and set to work trying to find somewhere we could use our DVC points and use about the same amount of points as we had planned to use in February. As expected, we didn’t have a lot of options, but that was no biggie either. Just happy to be going!

We ended up with the first night at Kidani in a savannah view studio. The next two nights were, get this, in a grand villa (yes for four of us :p ) at Old Key West, then two nights in a studio at Saratoga Springs. This would be an adventure!

Of course that was just the beginning. About 9 days before we left Ally was at basketball tryouts and rolled her ankle. Her ankle was huge when I picked her up, but she’d done something similar at volleyball tryouts and it was just sprained then. I assumed that was the case here, but we went to the doc just in case. When he told us there was a fracture, I was shocked! My first thoughts were sadness that she probably wouldn’t make varsity since she only went to one day of tryouts, and my second thought was how sad her volleyball coach was going to be when we told her that Ally wouldn’t be at the last volleyball tournament of the season in two days. It didn’t hit me until we were in the car going home that we were going to Disney in 9 days.

I screamed – “Oh no!! We’re going to Disney World!!” That may have been the first time I’ve used “Oh no” and “we’re going to Disney” in the same sentence. Ally immediately started clamoring for an electric scooter which seemed like a bad idea for too many reasons to list here. :)

She had a walking cast, but there was no way she was up for the amount of walking that Disney entails, so we were looking at our first trip to Disney with a GAC card and a wheel chair! This should be an experience.

Oh, and if you were wondering, Ally did make varsity. All five foot zero of her. And she’s a freshman! She’s out for a few weeks, but thankfully basketball season is long. Go Ally, go Ally…go go go Ally…:D

Great TR so far. Your pictures of AKL are so pretty! They look great, especially without a tripod. If that was me, the pictures would be all blurry!

Oh and I love your iPhone case! I'm usually not crazy about cases with graphics on them, but that one is really cute!

I'm in! It will help my 9 days until I'm there go faster! I'm loving the Christmas decorations at AKL. We are planning on visiting the day we are at AK to see them first hand. Can't wait to read more.

9 days! Yay! Actually, I'm going to be there next week for the Fantasyland opening! Sounds like I'll just miss you.

Love your pictures! :)

It took me a while to pick out my phone case. I had about 4 I couldn't decide between. But I like it! :)

Thank you, Deb!
It was so weird when we got off the bus and there wasn't anyone there!!
The weather was great most of the time, but we had one very chilly day. The rest of the days were coolish in the mornings and evenings, but gorgeous during the day. Too cool to swim for me though!

Sunday – November 18th – Epcot

According to Touring Plans crowd calendars, this was our only somewhat quiet day of the entire week, and it was only at Epcot. Since Epcot is our favorite park, we didn’t want to waste it. But we didn’t get our usual early start. I slept until around 9. Stephen had already been up and running at that point. We got Ally up at 9:30 and Chase at 10:00. We brought some cereal with us, and Stephen got some milk and donuts from the store.

The breakfast of champions:

We relaxed on the balcony and watched the animals while the kids got ready. I love savanna view rooms so much.

Today we were going to buy my first ever :) annual passes!! I know, it’s surprising that I’ve never had them as much as I go. Disneyland yes, several annual passes there, but not Disney World! The truth is, between military tickets, training tickets, and what not, I haven’t ever needed one before! But DVC had a discount and this was finally my time!

So that was going to be our first destination, the Ticket and Transportation center. We were going there because we had a friend working! One of the sons of our friends who went on the Canada cruise with us recently, is working the (post) college program at Disney. He works in a ticket booth at the TTC, so we wanted to stop by and say hi, and get our annual passes from him.

We were almost ready to go and Chase had just poured a bowl of cereal when Stephen noticed we had a message. Jeff, who I had spoken to the night before, was on the phone apologizing for the difficulties in our room last night. He wanted us to go eat at Boma on Disney!

What? Awesome! Disney customer service at its finest. We were a little disgruntled the night before, but it was only one night and we were fine. So this was above and beyond.

Stephen wanted to go on to the parks since it was so late, but I was like no way!! We can’t pass this up!

So we went and dropped off our bags to be transferred and then caught the shuttle to Jambo!

We’ve had Boma for dinner before, but never breakfast. It was an awesome relaxing way to start the day.

We finally were on our way about 12:00!! Not exactly burning up the parks at this point. But we were on our way. Our very convoluted way. Getting to the TTC isn’t easy from most resorts!

We walked to the bus stop and caught a bus to Epcot since that came before Magic Kingdom. Then at Epcot we boarded the monorail to the TTC.

On the bus:

When the walking gets to be too much, that’s what a brother is there for:

There was a man and his daughter on our car with us and when we got off, he stopped us and asked if Ally was a gymnast. We said no, the leg break was from basketball and he confessed he thought she was McKayla from the women’s gymnastics team! Haha! Amusingly enough, Ally had just told me a couple of days before that that her friends say she looks like her too.

Maybe so!

I had Ally do her “not impressed face” later in the week for pictures.

We walked down to the TTC and found Preston’s booth. While we were waiting, a cast member stopped us and said we needed to go get a wheelchair and a card to get to the front of all the lines! They were watching out for us I guess.

Preston!!

ThanksgivingDisney1b09616.jpg

Preston did his job very well and I took pictures of him for his mother. Wasn’t tall enough to get the whole mouse cut out in the window!

ThanksgivingDisney1b09620.jpg

Ally told me to stop “awkwardly taking pictures of Preston” at this point.

Woo hoo! Annual pass!

Complimentary breakfast at Boma!! ZING!!! I'll take it!!

And Epcot looks super quiet in the pics from the monorail, especially for noontime!

Zing is right! When Stephen wanted to bypass, I tried to explain how crazy that was! He was glad we went, it was so delicious.

It was quiet in parts. Pretty busy once we got further in though!

I WANT THAT IPHONE CASE!

Haha! I know you like it Raven!

In this day and age of ipads and iphones, it's so much easier! You were always patient when I said I'd do it when I got back to the room! :)

I love your trip report. Your pictures are great! And the free breakfast at Boma was so nice of them. That is why I love Disney they go above and beyond my expectations. Once they sent milk and cookies to our room at BCV's to apologize after a taxi driver ripped off my SIL on a fare to the grocery store.
