How many security guards does Disney employ? Because hundreds sound like the entire security force.

That's a terrorist attack waiting to happen.

Literally thousands all over property. Without most of the resorts open and less need there that’s already close to the hundreds.

ESPN is next in the layoff list.

Of course, this will be fodder for the "ESPN is doomed" crowd, even though it isn't.

I'm sure that good people will lose their jobs, but there is so much fluff at ESPN that they should perpetually be getting rid of people. Virtually no one actually watches the channel(s) for the talking heads - the driver is and always will be live sports. As long as they keep good production personnel and announcers, they can do fine. Heck, they could probably just run an unpaid intern out there to host highlight/news shows and be okay.

Baggage Airline Guest Services laying off employees at Walt Disney World resort hotels

It's not clear to me but is the service totally going away or just cut back? With fewer resorts open, there's obviously less need for these positions and they could do stuff like lessen ours or cut the number of airlines they provide the service for. Or is this just the elimination of all bag handling (how about bags coming from the airport to the resorts)?

Unlike news, sports isn't on 24/7. You gotta have *something* to fill the non-sports timeslots. Why else do you think most sports radio programs are talk?

I noticed that come to think of it. The long line of guests were waiting to go to the kiosks near one rental counter to sign in/log in. It perhaps depends if one is lucky and no line then it's easy to get rental vehicle.
At least with Alamo at MCO, you do online check in at least 24 hours before arrival and print the slip at home. When you get to the airport you simply walk out to the garage pick a car in the class you paid for (keys are already in the car) and go to the exit gates. Show your license and credit card with your printed slip and you’re on your way. No kiosks, no desks.
I always rent a car in Orlando and I only use Alamo, simply for this reason.

There's going to be the need for a lot less security guards going thru bags with the new millimeter AI scanners.

Also, for every resort and water park closed, that's a few dozen less guards for each property.

And with half the guests elsewhere, there's probably half the need for security in the properties that are open.

I rented and stood in line last month sign docs, talk to rental staff member at rental counter Where is this so called self check out and what rental company?

We always Alamo now and checkin online. Go direct to the garage and the most we’ve waited is less than five minutes. Usually no wait.

Regarding the OPs news, I posted a few weeks ago this would have happened anyway. As severe? Probably not. But it was coming. 2020 gave them a reason to accelerate / smokescreen / increase numbers.

ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro is no stranger to implementing layoffs. Handpicked by Iger to replace the previous ESPN President who Iger instructed to resign, Jimmy was an exec in Disney that implemented layoffs in his division.

Uh, the one who had been threatened with extortion by his drug dealer?

Yes the new scanner hardware is going to have a huge impact. The huge army of security needed prior to the new system was huge in numbers. That can now come down to just a handful.
