23 F&W Booths, 6 Visits to Epcot, 4 Star Tours, & an Engagement Oct 2011 Trip Report

Cast from L to R: Lauren, me (Glenn), my boyfriend (Michael), and Kirk. At this point, Michael and I are in between newbie & veteran status while the other 2 are almost all newbie, so we took the lead on showing them around.

Day 1: Wednesday, October 26, 2011

On our last trip, we took an early 7am flight which means, getting up at 4am, spending arrival day in the parks, and ready to pass out by dinner time. So this time, we bumped it back a few hours. Left BWI airport at 9:20am and arrived at MCO at 11:35. Kirk & Lauren had to figure out their route to the Downtown Disney Hilton and Mike & I were off to DME at the Boardwalk.

We immediately boarded a DME bus motorcoach and were on our way. Upon arrival, we were quickly greeted by Martha who was extremely helpful and took care of us right away. She told us to have a seat on the couch in the Boardwalk lobby and gathered our packet of information. Within minutes we were headed to our room (Villas #2052). Our room overlooked the Luna Park Pool.

P10002751024x768.jpg

I turned on the TV to say “hi” to Stacy, but then around 1 pm, we headed on a 15-minute stroll over to Hollywood Studios. Lauren & Kirk were still getting settled, so we toured without them. Right away the park seemed busier than I had anticipated, but the wait times didn’t really reflect that. We walked on Tower of Terror immediately.

P10002851024x768.jpg

We needed a quick bite and thanks to some fan sites out there, we were both excited to check out the “gourmet” hot dogs at Fairfax Fare. Mike opted for the Truffle Mac & Cheese dog, while I went for the BBQ Pork & Cole Slaw dog. However, we had a little Cast Member issue during this. The CM seemed bored while resting on the counter, didn’t greet us at all, mixed up our drink order, and almost began to argue with me over the drink. After resolving the issue, we took our dogs and “pigged” out. They were amazing!

P10002871024x768.jpg

We were still waiting for Lauren & Kirk to arrive, so we wandered over to Animation Courtyard and watched the “Magic of Animation” movie (first time for us to see this) and then proceeded to get pictures with Winnie the Pooh and determine which characters we are most like.

P10002901024x768.jpg

Then it was time for an afternoon cocktail, so we went on over to High Octane Refreshments while we still waited for our friends. Once they said they were finally on their way, we headed toward the main entrance to meet time.

After meeting up, we stopped for a group picture and made it to the 4pm Beauty & the Beast show. Then it was off to our first Star Tours adventure with no wait – and I was the Rebel Spy!! Woohoo! Somehow I was looking down in my picture…oh well. We encountered the Stormtroopers, traveled to Hoth, received a transmission from Yoda, and finally ended up in Naboo (oh silly Jar Jar). Then it was quickly over to the 5pm show of the American Idol Experience.

Then it was off to Epcot. We had just missed a Friendship boat, but there was a bus waiting to take us to the main entrance of Epcot, so we took that. After a quick ride on SSE, we grabbed some F&W Festival Passports and made our way to France for a Grand Marnier slush….yummmmmm. No one in the group could make a decision on any other kiosks until we stopped there.

P10003181024x768.jpg

We continued our way around picking up some snacks in Morocco (kefta pocket) and Japan (pork kakuni) before discovering the Singapore Sling at the Singapore kiosk. Kirk named it the best value in Epcot, because it’s $7.25 and almost all alcohol. Boyz II Men were about to start their final performance at the Eat to the Beat Concert Series so we grabbed Linda Bean’s Lobster Roll & a pumpkin mousse with Craisins and a beer (Hops & Barley) and stood in the back of the America Pavilion to just relax and enjoy the music. The Kefta pocket was okay; however, the Pork Kakuni from Japan was very delicious. The Lobster roll and pumpkin mousse were also both very good -- nice size portions to just let you try a little and keep going for something else.

P10003221024x768.jpg

After the show, we continued to walk around World Showcase, had some beef filet (South Africa), went for a spin on Maelstrom, and stopped for some potstickers, barbecue chicken stick (a very delicious choice) and a Happy Lychee (China) before watching Illuminations. Then it was time for the Gran Fiesta Tour in Mexico (even the Happy Lychee couldn’t help that one).

P10003341024x768.jpg

By this point, Lauren & Kirk (and almost everyone else in the park) went to their hotel, but Mike & I stayed. It’s amazing how quickly World Showcase went from being incredibly crowded to almost empty. We tried the tacos from the Mexico F&W booth. I thought I could take a quick ride on Test Track using the Single Rider line but that was insanely long – even longer than the Stand-by line, so I just gave up on that.

We took a slow walk back to the Boardwalk and called it a night.

Coming up…more Epcot, a wine seminar, and more…

Day 3 Continued

It was onto the Epcot (day 3 of 3!) via the monorail for some Friday night F&W Festival entertainment. We had a little time to kill and it’s been a while since I’ve seen Ellen’s Energy Adventure, so we gave that a try. What a long 45 minutes!?!?! The video part in the beginning was okay, but the ride-through portions seem to drag. There were a few dark moments where I could have dozed off.

P1000463768x1024.jpg

Time for a pick me up! We were on our way to the Festival Center for the 6pm Mixology Seminar. Tonight’s sponsor was Cointreau.

P10004641024x768.jpg
P10004651024x768.jpg

Again, Dianne and her team were there to greet everybody. The atmosphere at the seminar was very different from yesterday’s wine seminar. This was definitely more crowded, slightly younger average-age, and a little livelier (some people were too lively). Our host was Michael “Bumby” Bombard, Beverage and Cocktail Innovator. Bumby was a great presenter, gave us some great mixology tips, and demonstrated the 3 featured drinks – the “Original” Margarita, the Cosmopolitan, and Fall Festive Sangria. All 3 were delicious. Lauren, who likes Cosmos and not tequila or wine, enjoyed the margarita and the sangria over the cosmo. The Fall Festive Sangria was definitely my favorite of the 3. The seminar was supposed to run 45 minutes and did run over, because there were a few people who appeared to have made some trips around the F&W Festival already that day. The good people at Cointreau gave everyone a very nice goody bag containing some drink mixing devices (lime squeezer, a cocktail shaker, and a shot measuring device). For $12, this was definitely a great value!

P10004691024x768.jpg
P10004701024x768.jpg

Okay, we just had a little bit of time to get out of the Festival Center and make it to the Gin Blossoms concert (probably what Lauren and Kirk were most excited about). We grabbed a few snacks along the way. I tried the Chiptole Chicken Sausage from Canada first. The sausage was spicy, but the corn polenta that was served with it was a great sweet compliment. Mike stopped at New Zealand for the seared sea scallop. Next it was off to Singapore for another Sling (best value in Epcot) and the coconut-braised beef. Wow! The beef was delicious. The Gin Blossoms was a great time. They sounded great and the crowd was into it.

P10004711024x768.jpg
P10004721024x768.jpg
P1000478768x1024.jpg

After the show, we continued snacking. First up was the Boolgogi BBQ Beef in South Korea. The wonderful aromas coming from the SK kiosk were wonderful and the beef and kimchi weren’t that bad either. Lauren got more potstickers in China, while I tried the frozen Caipirinha in Brazil (not my favorite). We continued back around for a stop for some warm, comfort-food in Ireland – the Fisherman’s Pie in (always a winner) and ended in France with a Cosmo Slush to watch Illuminations from the bridge between France and the UK.

After the 10pm show, Mike & I walked back to the Boardwalk and made a stop in the Belle Vue Lounge before calling it a day.

Coming up…a quick Tour of the Stars, Mexico Tequila Lunch, and Morocco…

Day 4: Saturday, October, 29, 2011

We decided to sleep in a bit today (gasp!). But the inner-child in me, couldn’t sleep as late as we wanted. So, I made a quick walk over to HS at 11am to go for another ride on Star Tours. This time Darth Vader greeted us first, sent us to the land of the Wookies, followed by a message from Princess Leia, and then finally off to Naboo. For those of you keeping score at home, here’s my Star Tours update after 2 rides:
  • Scene 1: Stormtroopers 1, Darth Vader 1
  • Scene 2: Hoth 1, Wookies 1
  • Scene 3: Yoda 1, Leia 1
  • Scene 4: Naboo 2

P10004991024x768.jpg

Okay, that was my quick stop at HS. Because there was a Friendship boat waiting at HS, I hopped on that, got off at the Swalphin, and walked to meet Mike on the Boardwalk. We were on our way to Epcot (yes Epcot trip #4 in 4 days). I made a stop in Norway to purchase the Geir men’s cologne, because it has been on my mind since our 2009 trip.

We then arrived at 12:45 for our F&W Festival Mexico Tequila Lunch at La Hacienda de San Angel. As we walked in the door, we were greeted with a rosarita margarita. Now this is my kind of event. We were seated at a 4-top where 2 other people were already seated (Hi to Joy & Don from Charlotte, NC if you’re out there!). Each place-setting included 4 shots of tequila and a bottle of water. The table also shared a plate of aromatics and crackers.

P10005091024x768.jpg

Christina, the manager of La Hacienda, welcomed everyone and introduced Hilda, the tequila ambassador, and Alfonso, chef at La Hacienda. Hilda began explaining the first tequila, the importance of the age, how to sniff/taste (she demonstrated first of course – great job!!), and then brought out Alfonso, who explained the course to be paired with the tequila.

P1000511768x1024.jpg
P1000518768x1024.jpg

Overall, the event lasted about 90 minutes (earlier reports I read online said they were rushed along under the 60 minute-mark because of other events going on). Christina, Hilda, and Alfonso were just great!! The food was amazing!!! I can’t wait to go back just to try more items on the dinner menu.

Day 4 Continued

After lunch, we went to Innoventions West to check out the Chase Disney Visa Character Greeting Spot. We weren’t sure what (or who) to expect. After waiting in line for less than 5 minutes, we walked in and were greeted by Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy. Then we went to pick up our photo immediately at the photo center near Spaceship Earth. Definitely a nice touch for the Chase Visa cardholders.

disney2011_pp1.jpg

Even though we were gorged ourselves at the Tequila lunch, we wanted some dessert, so we went to the Desserts & Champagne booth to get the Dessert Trio. All 3 were very good, but I think the White Chocolate Macadamia Mousse was our favorite.

P1000520768x1024.jpg

We took a little time to explore the Morocco pavilion after that (I wanted to check it out more after reading an in-depth review over at AllEars.net). The attention to detail is just amazing. By this point, it was going about 4pm and we had to get over to the MK to meet up with Lauren & Kirk.

Day 4 Continued

We walked to the front of Epcot and boarded the monorail for the MK. Upon arrival, we were quickly greeted with an extremely busy Main Street. Lauren & Kirk were in the Tiki Room, so we stopped to buy the 40th Anniversary tumblers that I saw online over the summer and added to my must-buy list.

P1000553768x1024.jpg
sae304888LARGE.jpg

P10005641024x768.jpg

In case you can't tell, that's my sad face about SWSA going away, even though I'm very excited for all of the FLE.

Then on our way to Adventureland, a text from Lauren said they were on the Jungle Cruise, so Mike & I went to the Tiki Room. I have only seen the Tiki Room once and that was the UNM-edition in 2009, so I was excited to see the “original” version. We were seated next to people who were fans of the Tiki Room so I think that just added to the excitement of being there and experiencing it. Good job TDO!

P10005671024x768.jpg

Lauren wanted to go on Splash Mountain, so we tried to squeeze that in. The dilemma was we had a ADR for Tony’s Town Square at 7:10 and the return time for FP was 6:45pm. Lauren & Mike used the FP at exactly 6:45 while Kirk & I took a slow walk up to Tony’s. We waited until exactly 7:10 to check-in (I requested a table on the terrace to watch the MSEP) and hoped that Lauren & Mike would soon join us.

P10005721024x768.jpg

Well, then the text came from Lauren that they were stuck on Splash Mountain right before the big drop. Ugh! Luckily, Tony’s was behind schedule, so that helped out. After 25 minutes, our table was ready – and it was on the terrace so we could watch the parade while we ate!!! Thanks to David for working that out for us. And right after we were seated, we saw Mike & Lauren walk-up…perfect timing!!

Our server was Kristin, and she was extremely nice. She gave Mike & me a “congratulations” on our engagement – Mike thought it was very magical how they knew already. We started out with the zucchini fries and some bread (both yum!!). Mike had the seafood diavolo, Kirk had the lasagna, Lauren had the NY strip steak, and I had the chicken parm. Mike & Kirk both loved their dishes, while Lauren & I thought ours were just okay.

P10005731024x768.jpg
P10005801024x768.jpg

It was just wonderful to be able to sit down, enjoy dinner, and watch the MSEP from the table. I loved how they guarded the door, so anyone who wasn’t seated on the terrace was asked to return to their table inside. Made me feel kinda VIP-ish.

P10005881024x768.jpg
P10005871024x768.jpg

After dinner, we walked up Main Street toward Cindy’s as the first Magic, Memories, and You show was playing. Main Street was incredibly crowded. As we came to the end of it by the Plaza, Cast Members were doing everything they could to keep the traffic flowing, including directing guests to the secondary exit behind Main Street. Right before Wishes began, the place was complete chaos – including a couple stand-offs between strollers and ECVs. Neither of them wanted to back down – I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I really wish I would have taken a picture of this!!!

As soon as Wishes began, the traffic seemed to clear and we made a quick break to the mob in the center (inside the taped-lines of course) and enjoyed Wishes. After the show, Lauren & Kirk were tired and went back to their hotel (I said to be at HS before 9am tomorrow to get FPs for TSM). Mike & I stayed around for the second MM&Y show, since I didn’t get to see all of it the 1st time around.

We decided to head back to the hotel and relax. The line for the Boardwalk bus was incredibly long so we hopped on a Yacht/Beach Club bus instead. Unfortunately we had to listen to a girl who just got engaged in front of the Castle call each family and friend she knows to tell them the news. I don’t think the crowded bus really needs to hear your conversations over and over again.

Anyway, we got off at the Yacht Club, and made a stop at the Big River Grille for a beer and then finally to Belle Vue Lounge before calling it a night.

Coming Up…Will Kirk & Lauren finally make it to a park opening on time to get to TSM?, food …

Our arrival day was October 29, sounds like it's a good thing we avoided MK that day. We had dinner at Ohana at 8:00 and the Poly was nuts enough!

Day 5: Sunday, October 30, 2011

Ohhhh nothing like waking up to seeing the Magical Express information under your door *tear*. Yes it’s the last full day in the World, and I’m not happy.

But what does make me happy is getting to the park at opening time. Today it’s time to go back to HS and rush for everyone’s favorite – Toy Story Mania. Mike & I made our 12-minute walk from the Boardwalk and were in the park before 9am. And surprisingly, Lauren & Kirk were in front of us in the mob waiting for the rope drop (well done!!). We followed the mob over to TSM and grabbed FPs. Then it was off to Rock and Roller Coaster – no wait at all.

P10005891024x768.jpg

After the RnRC, we stopped at Starring Rolls for a little snack, where I found this beauty…

P10004911024x768-1.jpg

…the banana split cupcake…mmmmm….food . ***See EDIT note below...wrong cupcake.***

Then it was off to the Great Movie Ride, where Lauren compared her shoe size to Donald Duck. We had a little time to kill before our TSM FP return time, so we wandered through One Man’s Dream. We took our ride on TSM, where I let the old-times ride together and the 2 younger (more competitive ones – Lauren and I) battled it out. Everyone enjoyed it so much that we grabbed FPs to come back later on in the evening.

P10005991024x768.jpg

While the old-timers relaxed, Lauren and I found the not-so-secret secret hiding place for Monsters Inc. so we stopped for a quick picture with them.

P10006031024x768.jpg

Then it was off to the 50s Prime-Time Café for our lunch ADR. I’ve eaten here once before, but our server didn’t really get into it, but it can still be fun to watch the other tables. This time our server was Richard, and he was having some fun with us. And I was willing to play along. Of course everyone got yelled at for putting their elbows on the table – poor Mike and Kirk…they just kept doing it.

I ordered the Blue Plate Fish Special (blackened catfish, tomatoes, and polenta….sooooo good). Mike and Kirk both got the potpie and Lauren had the meatloaf. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We did start with a cocktail from Dad’s Liquor Cabinet. Grandma’s Picnic Punch was probably everyone’s favorite. I cleaned my plate, so I put a little smiley face made of ketchup on it, and Richard said ketchup is a vegetable here and tried to feed it to me. Oops.

P1000608768x1024.jpg

After lunch, we checked out the Muppet-Vision 3D. It’s always a hoot and I’m excited for the upcoming movie, but it would be nice if the attraction could get an update. After that, we were all feeling a little tired (stupid daytime drinking!), so Mike & I grabbed a FP for Star Tours for later use and we all went back to our hotels for a little rest.

Day 5 Continued

After a little rest at the hotel, I made a quick walk back to HS for 2 rides on Star Tours (using my FP and Mike’s – he stayed in the room). Here’s the latest Star Tours count:
ST2 Score
  • Scene 1: Stormtroopers 3, Darth Vader 1
  • Scene 2: Hoth 2, Wookies 1, pod race 1
  • Scene 3: Yoda 1, Leia 2, Akbar 1
  • Scene 4: Naboo 4…seriously??
Overall, not too bad. I got to see most of the scene options. But Naboo…4 times? Really?

Okay, back to the Boardwalk, meet up with Mike, and off to (surprise! surprise!) Epcot….5 days in a row…hooray!!! You never would have guessed that, right? We did have a ADR for Yachtsman Steakhouse, but Mike wasn’t feeling a full steak dinner tonight.

Lauren and Kirk had already arrived in Epcot and were wandering (I think potstickers were on the agenda). I immediately stopped at the France kiosk for some Coq au Vin. It was absolutely delicious. I loved the macaroni gratin that was served with it. Next, Mike hit up the Belgium booth for one item that had been calling him since we arrived…the steamed mussels in garlic cream sauce. He said it was only okay. And a stop in New Zealand...for a scallop I think.

P1000614768x1024.jpg
P10006161024x768.jpg

Then off to Singapore for another Sling (yikes!) and to share the shrimp cake. The shrimp cake was awesome. So I do declare (in my best Blanche Devareaux voice) the Singapore kiosk the winner of the F&W Festival. With the flavorful coconut braised beef, the delicious shrimp cake, and the Sling (best value in Epcot), this booth was our absolute favorite.

P10006171024x768.jpg

We continued our dinner snacking (as we listened to Sister Hazel from a distance) over to Poland for the Strawberry Beleveder Balsamic Chiller and the Golabki (pork-stuffed cabbage). I wanted to like the Chiller, but it just seemed like an almost-creamy, not-quite-frozen enough slush. However, the Golabki was very good.

P10006211024x768.jpg

At this point, we met up with Lauren & Kirk, and continued wandering. We ended up at the Greece kiosk for the Griddle Greek Cheese with pistachios and honey and a stop at the Craft Beers booth.

Lauren wanted to go back to the hotel, so Kirk stayed with us as we enjoyed our final evening in the World. We went back over toward Mexico. Mike got the shrimp taco from the kiosk, and I went inside the Mexico Pavilion to try the jalapeño margarita from La Cava de Tequila. It was good -- a great tasting margarita with a little bit of heat.

P10006251024x768.jpg

By this point, Illuminations was ready to begin, but we decided to go to the Boardwalk and check out Jellyrolls. This was our first time in Jellyrolls (but it won’t be the last). Because it was a Sunday night and still relatively early, it was not crowded at all. We were able to get a table close to the stage, snacked on popcorn, and enjoyed the 32oz big red cup special. The musicians at Jellyrolls are extremely talented and kept the audience entertained. It was a great way to spend our last night.
