2022 Box Office Tracking

Oh I misread. So, in WB's brilliant wisdom, they moved Aquaman2 out of the way of Avatar2's destruction and moved a different movie into its path?

I guess in their mind it's better to move another water-based move away from Avatar2 and put in something else to fail?
It's almost like someone in management got confused when they were told Black Panther 2 was likely to get delays and Avatar 2 was likely to not move. I kid...

The Batman continues to dominate the box office charts as it has gathered $238M domestically and will pass $500M worldwide before next weekend. This is amazing for a three-hour film with new leads and a slightly edgier tone than recent superhero films. It shows that the new iteration of Batman is ready for another film, and I think audiences are as well. As for the second-weekend totals, The Batman fell an amazing 51%, translating to a total of $66M. This makes The Batman the highest-grossing film of the year so far. It will grow even bigger throughout this coming week as no major wide releases are coming this Friday. As for Turning Red, Deadline states the film could have made $20M-$30M if it were to be released in theaters. Not sure if those numbers are even that reliable, but it is something I guess. Other holds were quite outstanding with Uncharted, Dog, Death on the Nile, No Way Home, and Sing 2 all falling under 20%

As for this Friday, there are two wide releases. The first in Sony's Umma, and the other film is A24's X.

Notable Totals:
  • No films fell more than 50% this week.
  • Licorice Pizza, Belfast, Drive My Car, and The Automat all increased this week
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Marry Me (-373)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • Drive My Car and The Batman (NC)

The Batman continues to hold the #1 spot as it made $36.8M (-45%) in its third weekend. The Batman has now made $300.1M domestically and roughly $600M worldwide. The Batman was not the only winner, as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was able to gather $17.7M. A24's new horror flick X gathered $4.4M. That is not terrible for the hard-R film it is, but it could have been a bit more with it showing in just under 3k theaters. Smaller films like The Outfit, The Kashmir Files, and Umma all opened under $2M. Umma actually opened even less with a $915K opening. Not surprising when Sony dated this just last month with absolutely no promo.

As for this Friday, The Lost City opens wide. The film is probably going to be the film that ends The Batman's #1 streak. The film actually had early Fandango screenings last night. Deadline states that "two thirds of the screenings were sold out and near 83% capacity across all showtimes." I can verify that. How? Because I went last night! My theater was sold out and laughing non-stop. The movie was great, and I highly recommend checking it out this coming weekend.

Notable totals:
  • Cyrano, Marry Me, and The Cursed fell more than 50%
  • The Automat, Nightmare Alley, West Side Story, and Belfast increases this week.

  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Marry Me (-390)

No Way Home will reach $800 million domestic by next weekend or earlier. It will pass $1.9 billion soon.

The Batman may end up close to $400 million domestic. It has a shot at $1 billion WW.

The box office is back in business (albeit with superhero movies, but still).

"Tomorrow, on its 101st day of release, Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home will reach the rare domestic box office milestone of $800M, becoming one of only three movies to do so in Hollywood history after 2015’s Star Wars: Force Awakens ($936.6M) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M).

At the same time, Deadline hears that the Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch movie sold 2.1M+ units in the U.S. during its first week of digital release, the pic made available on March 15. We’re informed on good authority that’s a digital sales industry record for a movie in its first week, ahead of all previous rival titles. No Way Home debuted on digital platforms 88 days after its theatrical release — a rare pre-pandemic traditional window. Back of the napkin revenue for No Way Home‘s electronic sales is close to $42M, off a $19.99 price."

A new crowd is slowly returning to the movies, as The Lost City was able to bring a lot of women over 35. This helped the film open slightly above expectations with $31M. This opening is the third-best opening of the year, which is great for an original IP with two stars that haven't had a huge hit in some time. Even though it is not #1 anymore, The Batman is seeing the fourth weekend of $20.5M, which brings the domestic total to $331.9M and the worldwide total to $672.8M. Indian film RRR was able to open strong with $9.5M. It may not seem huge compared to other films, but this is a foreign film with a three-hour runtime. That is impressive. A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once is another success as it gathered a stellar $509.6K in ten theaters. It expands a bit more this Friday, and then nationwide on April 8. Oh, and as I posted yesterday, No Way Home has made $800M domestic.

As for this coming Friday, Morbius finally releases wide. With the director and Sony itself already spoiling the film on Twitter, it will curious to see how much this film will make.

Notable totals:
  • Five fell more than 50%
  • The Automat was the only film to increase this week.

  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Death on the Nile (-750)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:

Updated look at the 10 Best Picture nominees on Oscar Day:

Dune: $108.2 million
West Side Story: $38.5 million
Licorice Pizza: $17.2 million
King Richard: $15 million
Nightmare Alley: $11.3 million
Belfast: $9.2 million
Drive My Car: $2.2 million
CODA: n/a
Power of the Dog: n/a
Don't Look Up: n/a

Licorice Pizza looks to be the one to benefit the most from Oscar hype and an expanding theater count.

While it's unclear how well certain titles did on streaming, it's obvious that the business model of Oscar buzz for a box office bump isn't what it used to be.

Trust me, I have not forgotten about this thread! Just been busy and it does help that the holiday weekend is coming up. Anyway, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was able to produce a fantastic $71M. This is now the best opening for Jim Carrey and any video game adaptation. This helps prove that this is a worthy franchise that has loads of potential for future installments. Not everyone was a winner, as Michael Bay could not make Ambulance happen. The new film from Bay opened at just $8.7M. However, there is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which had a solid expansion. The A24 film brought in about $6M this past weekend. As for holdovers, Morbius flopped big time, as it fell 74% in its second weekend.

There are two new wide releases coming this week. Sony has Father Stu on Wednesday and Warner Bros has Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on Friday.

1.) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Par) 4,234 theaters, Fri $26.5M, Sat $26.8M, Sun $17.7M, 3-day $71M/Wk 1

2.) Morbius (Sony) 4,268 theaters, Fri $2.9M, Sat $4.4M, Sun $2.8M, 3-day $10.2M (-74%)/Total $57M/Wk 2

3.) The Lost City (Par) 3,797 (-486) theaters Fri. $2.56M, Sat $4M, Sun $2.55M,, 3-day $9.1M (-38%)/Total $68.8M/ Wk 3

4.) Ambulance (Uni) 3,412 theaters, Fri $3.2M, Sat, $3.3M, Sun $2.2M, 3-day $8.7M/Wk 1

5.) The Batman(WB) 3,254 (-478) theaters Fri $1.75M, Sat $2.9M, Sun $1.9M, 3-day: $6.5M (-41%) Total $358.8M/Wk 6

6.) Everything Everywhere All at Once (A24) 1,250 (+1,212) theaters, Fri $2.1M, Sat $2.1M, Sun $1.7M, 3-day $6.05M (+505%)/Total $8.4M/Wk 3

7.) Uncharted (Sony) 2,318 (-746) theaters, Fri $735K Sat $1.2M Sun $710K, 3-day $2.65M (-28%), Total $142.9M/Wk 8

8.) Jujutsu Kaisen (Crunch) 850 (-1,220) theaters, Fri $230K, Sat $345K, Sun $250K, 3-day $825K (-58%), Total $33.1M/Wk 4

9.) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) 1,009 (-696) theaters, Fri $170k, Sat $288K, Sun $167K, 3-day $625K, -57%, Total $803.8M/Wk 17

Again, I am still updating this thread haha. I was on vacation this past week, so I did not have a chance to update Fantastic Beasts OW (not that it was good news anyway). However, movies are showing some sign of life with the three new releases this week. The big winner of this weekend was The Bad Guys with a $24M opening, roughly $10M more than projected. The two other releases this week, The Northman and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, opened with mediocre totals. Both films could have opened bigger, but it is not terrible. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had a decent hold, but Fantastic Beasts 3 dropped a harsh 67%. That is better than 70%+ predicted earlier this week, but it is still not good.

As for this Friday, only Liam Neeson is going to try and make money for Doctor Strange 2 hits with his new film Memory.

Notable totals:
  • Eight films fell more than 50%
  • Sing 2 was the only film to increase this week.
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Ambulance (-1,446)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • Father Stu (n/c)

3.) Fantastic Beasts…Dumbledore(WB), 4,245 (+37) theaters, Fri $4.1M (-79%), Sat $6M, Sun $3.9M, 3-day $14M (-67%)/Total $67.1M/Wk 2

Nothing really to report besides a bunch of holdovers. With Doctor Strange 2 expected to gather $150M-$200M this coming weekend, it left all the remaining films to gather as much as they can before the new MCU flick hits. Just like last weekend, The Bad Guys took the #1 spot again, only falling 33% in its second weekend. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and The Northman had decent holds in the mid-40s, but remember that they did not open that big, to begin with. Everything Everywhere All at Once continues to dominate with a 2% increase. Lastly, Memory opened at #8, with a lackluster $3.1M opening weekend total.

1.) The Bad Guys (Uni) 4,042 (+34) Theaters, Fri $3.7M (-54%), Sat $7.5M, Sun $4.87M, 3-day $16.1M (-33%)/Total $44.4M/Wk 2

2.) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Par) 3,801 (-8) theaters, Fri $2.5M (-37%), Sat $5.37M/ Sun $3.48M, 3-day $11.35M (-27%)/Total $160.9M/Wk 4

3.) Fantastic Beasts…Dumbledore(WB), 3,962 (-283) theaters, Fri $2.1M (-47%), Sat $3.7M, Sun $2.4M, 3-day $8.3M (-41%)/Total $79.55M/Wk 3

4.) The Northman (Foc) 3,234 (+50) theaters, Fri $1.8M (-64%), Sat $2.7M, Sun $1.77M, 3-day $6.3M (-49%)/Total $22.8M/Wk 2

6.) Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (LG) 3,036 theaters, Fri $1.1M (-62%),Sat $1.7M, Sun $1.1M, 3-day $3.9M (-45%)/Total $13.5M/Wk 2

Summer movie season is in full swing, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has opened with an amazing $185M total. While that is what Disney is calling it, Deadline predicts that the final numbers tomorrow will be above $190M. Either way, it is a great opening for a long-delayed movie. To put that total into perspective, roughly 13.5M people went to go see the film in the states and Canada. That is slightly above The Batman's 10.1M and under No Way Home's 20.6M. DSMOM opened with a global total of roughly $450M. The only films to stand strong this weekend were The Lost City, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Bad Guys, with each falling in the 35%-40% range.

Notable totals:
  • 11 films fell more than 50%
  • Petite maman and Vortex was the only film to increase this week.
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Father Stu (-1,211)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Uncharted (n/c)
As one gigantic movie opens, none dare to follow it. This Friday has only wide release, Firestarter, and it will be available on Peacock the same day.

The box office was not that eventful this weekend, as some of the leftover titles and newcomers did not post any huge numbers. DSMOM fell a steep 67%. That is not amazing, but it was expected after the mixed audience reaction and front-loaded opening weekend. Firestarter did not have an amazing opening weekend either, as the film opened with $3.8M. This is below expectations, but the 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and the availability on Peacock only help predict the low total. The big winner of the weekend is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which fell just 6% in its 8th weekend. This sets it on course to become the highest domestic total for any A24 film.

Notable totals:
  • Three films fell more than 50%
  • Uncharted increased an astounding 500% after adding 1,000 theaters to help try and push to the $400M mark.
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • Memory (-1,648)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (n/c)
As for this coming Friday, Downton Abbey: A New Era and Men will be the only two new wide releases.

That Uncharted has made this much money despite mixed-to-negative reviews from audiences, critics and fans of the game is one of the more surprising success stories of the year.

I guess people really like Tom Holland.

Downton Abbey returns to the big screen with a $16M opening weekend. While this total is not the best, the film brought in a lot of older moviegoers. Plus, this total was in the projected range from earlier this week. Hopefully, the film will have legs down the road, but with Top Gun 2 coming out this Friday, it may be a better streaming option for some people. As for A24's Men, it did not have the best opening, as it seems people are still loving Everything Everywhere All at Once (which is now the highest-grossing A24 film ever). Another notable total is that The Lost City will cross the century mark next weekend, even though the film has been on streaming for many days now. As for Doctor Strange 2, it fell 51% in its third weekend. The film now has a $342M domestic total and $800M+ global total.

As for this Friday, Paramount is set to win the weekend with Top Gun Maverick. Disney is also participating in Memorial Day weekend with The Bob's Burgers Movie.

…feel the need, people…

Because there’s near universal praise for this one (other than the typical too serious grumps)…and the world needs rock stars in the sky right now.

Wow. It indeed is getting very good ratings from critics and near perfect acclaim from audience reviewers.
The gist seems to be it’s corny, but doesn’t try to take itself too serious

Which is basically the classic 1980’s blockbuster formula that Hollywood - as some of the better critics point out - has gotten away from unintentionally.

The only downside I’ve seen so far is that it seems the music is a bit of a mess…which was huge for the original.

Top gun was not a good script…but the whole package was perfect. Even trying to get kelly McGillis to not make cruise look short 😂

What I’m seeing here is the story/script is actually better this time…very ESB esque.
