That tweet above was so great that I had to share lol. For those who don't get it, Scream and No Way Home were neck and neck throughout the entire week while awards contenders, like House of Gucci, increased significantly due to adding hundreds of theaters as awards season goes full throttle. In the end, No Way Home won the battle by edging out Scream by a little under $2M. However, Scream held strong with a 59% decrease. That fall may seem steep, but it is normal for horror flicks to fall this high. 59% is actually on the better side. Plus, Scream's domestic total has already outsold the entire domestic run of Scream 4. As for No Way Home, it continues to dominate. It is currently the 6th highest-grossing film worldwide and the 4th highest-grossing film domestically. As for the new releases, they did almost nothing. The King's Daughter made $750K, and Redeeming Love made $3.7M in its OW. The rest of the top 10 held quite strongly, with dips no bigger than 30% (excluding Scream).

Notable Totals:
  • Scream, Belle, and Venom: Let There be Carnage were the only films to fall more than 50%
  • Flee and Drive My Carwere the only films to increase this week
    • Flee added 35 theaters and increased 2,664%!
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • The Matrix Resurrections (-716)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • Licorice Pizza (none)
Don't expect much for this coming weekend as there are no new wide releases scheduled. As Deadline points out, it won't be till March 25 when we start having at least one major release a week. It will start with The Lost City on March 25, and end with Doctor Strange 2 on May 6. After that, there is just one week of a break before the summer movie season brings on the blockbusters.

After two weeks of no large new releases, the movie business came back with two. However, audiences only seemed to be interested in one of the two. Jackass Forever opened at #1 with a $23.5M total. While that is lower than other entries in the franchise, it is most likely already close to breaking even with the budget being $10M (not including advertising). This is a huge win and shows that there are still people willing to go see these types of movies. Of course, Jackass is a large franchise. However, the last installment was 12 years ago, showing that the 67% 18-35 demo is stellar for this franchise. Now for the bad news. Moonfall, which cost more than $150M to make, only made $10M this weekend. With a C+ Cinemascore and a 40% RT score, there probably is not much of an audience to gain from here. As for the rest of the top 5, they all fell under 35%. BTW, Spidey is about $11M off from beating Avatar in the top 10 domestic totals.

Notable Totals:
  • Nightmare Alley and Belle were the only films to fall more than 50%
  • Drive My Car, Belfast, and Sundown were the only films to increase this week
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • American Underdog (-643)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • No Way Home (-75)

As for this coming weekend, it is the Super Bowl AND Valentines Day! There are three new wide releases: Death on the Nile, Blacklight, and Marry Me (which will be on Peacock the same day).

1.) Jackass Forever (Par) 3,604 theaters, Fri $9.6M/Sat $8.4M/Sun $5.5M/3-day $23.5M/Wk 1

2.) Moonfall (LG) 3,446 theaters Fri $3.4M/Sat $4M/Sun $2.5M/3-day $10M/Wk 1

3.) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) 3,600 (-75) theaters, Fri $2.08M (-24%)/Sat $4.65M/Sun $2.87M/ 3-day $9.6M (-13%)/Total $748.95M/Wk 8
Spidey is now $11.55M from becoming the No. 3 highest grossing movie at the domestic box office, beating Avatar.

4.) Scream (Par) 3,227 (-360) theaters Fri $1.2M (-42%)/Sat $2.28M/Sun $1.22M/3-day $4.7M (-35%), Total: $68.9M/Wk 4

Shang-Chi has 1 (Best Visual Effects)

Encanto has made $94 million domestically to date.

If it were to crack $100 million it would be the only movie besides Dune to do so and get 3 or more nominations.

It is Super Bowl and Valentine's Day weekend! Crazy isn't it? Yet, the box office didn't go crazy with its three new releases. Death on the Nile easily won the weekend with an opening weekend of $12.8M. While that is better than other older-targeted movies, it is not great. With the film costing $90M in production alone, Disney will probably lose a hefty amount. The second new release did better even though Marry Me only brought in $8M. The rom-com only cost $23M to make and will probably get closer to breaking even than Death on the Nile. Liam Neeson's new action movie, Blacklight, opened with $3.6M. The film cost $43M to make.

As for holdovers, they were mediocre. Despite great word of mouth, Jackass Forever fell 65% in its second weekend. Moonfall is even worse with a 71% drop. However, there is some interesting news as No Way Home is just ONE MILLION away from beating Avatar's domestic total. It will beat it in the next few days.

Notable Totals:
  • A whole slew of films fell more than 50% this week. They are listed in the BoxOfficePro article listed below.
  • Multiple Best Picture nominations increased this week. They include Licorice Pizza, Drive My Car, Belfast, and Dune.
Theater Count:
  • Highest Theater Count Loss:
    • The 355 (-1,147)
  • Lowest Theater Count Loss:
    • Moonfall (NC)

I loathe the Branagh versions of the Poirot movies. I read both books when I was younger, loved the original movie of Murder On The Orient Express' and really liked 'Death On the Nile', but, these new versions don't even resemble the source material.

This is now the third Fox/Searchlight title in a row to loose money for Disney following West Side Story and Nightmare Alley, and it looks like those two will not get any kind of awards season bump (especially with WSS coming to Disney+ March 2).

Spider-Man would now have to make another $98 million domestically to move up past Avengers: Endgame to the #2 spot.

Won't happen, but we'll see how close it gets. :)

Deadline has posted the projections for this coming weekend (and hints on The Batman):
  • Uncharted is set to gain $70M+ globally this weekend (not including the $22M total of this past weekend)
  • Uncharted is set to open around $27M for the three-day and $30M for the 4-day, per Sony.
    • Deadline said that the comp for this film, numbers-wise, would be Disney's Jungle Cruise, as it opened with $35M in 3 days. Although, JC was better received by critics, and one can argue that JC is a bigger brand than the Uncharted games.
  • Dog is set to open with $12M over the 4-day weekend.
  • Encanto is expanding with about 1k theaters due to the Oscars. The film is roughly $6M away from crossing $100M domestically, but it being on Disney+ for free might hurt that final push.
  • Deadline dropped a small tidbit that people in the industry are saying The Batman will open north of $100M. I doubt that. I think $80M-$90M would be a more reasonable opening.

As the weekend begins, we already have some great numbers. Uncharted and Dog made $3.7M and $1.2M in Thursday night previews, respectively. Those totals are great for both films. Uncharted’s total is higher than other films released at this time and will likely have a $30M+ opening weekend. As for Dog, the total is not crazy huge, but it a great total for a somewhat smaller film like this.

Uncharted continues to perform quite great, with a Friday total of $15.4M (including Thursday night previews). Projections have now been raised to $40M over the three-day and $45M-$50M over the four-day frame. Dog is still coming in line with projections of totals in the low-to-mid teens for both the three-day and four-day frame.

I didn't notice anything in the article but do we know yet if Dog's total includes the V-Day previews that were held? My guess is that it did, and the weekend totals may end up shy of the projections.
