Things have started to slow down at the box office as the marketplace gets ready for the movie palazzo that is October. What was released this week wasn't that great. However, let's start with the positive which is that Shang-Chi is still #1 three weeks out. The Marvel flick made $21.7M (-37%) in its third weekend. Shang-Chi currently sits at $176.9M domestically and $320.6M globally. Shang-Chi should beat Black Widow's totals very soon. As for Free Guy, it continues to have a strong grip on audiences as it stayed at #2 with a weekend total of $5.2M (-10%). This strong hold will help the film pass Jungle Cruise's domestic total in the coming weeks. Free Guy currently sits at $108.6M domestically and $298.3M worldwide, with the latter total crossing the $300 million mark sometime this week.

As for newcomer The Eyes of Tammy Faye, it didn't have the brightest number in its limited release. In just 450 theaters, the pic grossed $675K making for a $1.5K theater average. The average isn't terrible, but it won't help its award chances all that much. The Jessica Chastain-led film was at #9 this weekend.

As for Disney's other movies in the marketplace, Jungle Cruise is at #7 this week with an 8th weekend total of $2.09M (-11%). The film has just crossed the $200 million mark worldwide. Black Widow made $181k in its 11th weekend in 325 theaters. The Night House made $78k in its 5th weekend in 210 theaters. After 16 weekends, Cruella has finished its run with a domestic total of $86.1M and a global total of $233.2M.

As for this Friday, Dear Evan Hansen is the only wide release. With the film having a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and some discontent with Ben Platt taking on the lead role, Shang-Chi could hold on to the #1 spot for one more weekend before October starts.

A mixed bag could be a term used to describe this weekend's box office as there were winners and losers. The winners of course are Shang-Chi and Free Guy which had small drops and major accomplishments. Let's start with Shang-Chi, which had a weekend total of $13.3M (-39%). Shang-Chi marks the 3rd MCU film that has been able to hold the #1 spot for 4 weeks in a row. Yes, there has been very little competition this month, but it is still an accomplishment! The Marvel flick currently sits at $196.5M domestically and $363.4M worldwide. The film should be the first movie to hit $200 million this year by next weekend. As for Dear Evan Hansen, it looks like the terrible reviews hurt the film greatly as it only opened with $7.5M. However, the audience that did go and see loved the film with it having a solid CinemaScore and high RT Audience Score. Free Guy took spot #3 with a weekend total of $4.1M (-20%). The film sits at $114.1M domestically and $317.4M globally. Free Guy is now the 5th American film to cross the $300 million mark in global totals.

Let's now look at Disney's other films in the marketplace. Jungle Cruise was at #6 this weekend with a weekend total of $1.72M (-17%). The film is barely latching on the #5 spot on the domestic charts as Free Guy will most likely top it sometime this week. The Disneyland-inspired flick sits at $114.9M domestically with global numbers standing around $206 million. Another loss of the weekend went to The Eyes of Tammy Faye which had a weekend total of $633K (-3%). While that percentage may seem absolutely amazing, the film actually expanded over 900 theaters this weekend showing that this film has a very limited audience. Black Widow and The Night House numbers are not out yet.

As for this Friday, we begin October, which has 9 WIDE releases this month. To kick off the month we have Venom: Let There Be Carnage being a theatrical only release. Then we have the two smaller releases that are both day and date. First is The Addams Family 2 which will be in theaters and on PVOD. Lastly, Warner Brothers has The Many Saints of Newark hitting theaters and HBOMax (which is having a killer deal that ends tonight if anyone doesn't have the service yet). Venom 2 will definitely take the top spot with the two other releases will battle it out with each other and older movies.

1.) Shang-Chi (Dis) 3,952 theaters (-118)/ Fri $3.6M (-38%)/Sat $6M/Sun $3.7M/3-day $13.3M (-39%), Total: $196.5M/Wk 4

October has started with a bang! Venom: Let There Be Carnage has easily topped Black Widow's earlier opening weekend of $80.8M as the Marvel sequel has made an estimated $90.1M in its opening weekend. The film had not only topped Black Widow's opening, but also the original Venom! Venom opened with $80.2M, making the sequel's opening 12% higher (and during a pandemic!) than its predecessor. With this opening, I highly doubt any more blockbusters will shift their release dates due to the pandemic. The Addams Family 2 opened with a stellar $18M opening weekend. While this is more than $10 million lower than its original, it is still impressive that the sequel made that much with a digital day and date release. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings took spot #3 and fell 54% in its 5th weekend. While the hold isn't that great, it is understandable as there was plenty of new releases this weekend. The Many Saints of Newark sizzled as it came below expectations, and the only hope left for the movie is HBOMax.

Turning to Disney's 5 other movies playing in theaters, they all suffered some large drops. Free Guy fell about 45% with a weekend total of $2.2M. The film lost 630 theaters due to the new releases. Jungle Cruise came in 8th, falling 61%. The film made $680k this weekend. The Eyes of Tammy Faye fell a harsh 62% in its 3rd weekend with a weekend total of $236k. Black Widow fell 77% on its 13th weekend after losing 150 theaters. The Night House made $20k this weekend falling 69%.

As for next week, we have the second major blockbuster of the month with No Time to Die. It is one of the titles that was supposed to release back in the early days of the pandemic, so it had been sitting around for a long time. It will be interesting to see if American audiences will be as interested in it as other countries as the film has already made $119.1M overseas.

1.) Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Sony) 4,225 Theaters Fri $37.2M/St $31.6M/Sun $21.2/3-day $90.1M/Wk 1

2.) The Addams Family 2 (UAR) 4,207 theaters Fri $5.6M/Sat $7M/Sun $5.4M/3-day $18M/Wk 1

3.) Shang-Chi (Dis) 3,455 (-497) theaters Fri $1.62M / Sat $2.77M/Sun $1.63M/3-day $6M (-54%), Total: $206.1M/Wk 5

4.) The Many Saints of Newark (NL) 3,181 theaters Fri $2.1M, Sat $1.67M/Sun $1.25M/3-day $5M/Wk 1

5.) Dear Evan Hansen (Uni) 3,364 theaters Fri $740K/ Sat $1.05M/Sun $660K/ 3-day $2.45M (-67%), Total: $11.8M/Wk 2

6.) Free Guy (20th/Dis) 2,545 (-630) theaters Fri $611K / Sat $1.07M/Sun $599K/3-day $2.27M (-45%), Total: $117.6M/Wk 8

It will be interesting to see what legs it has. My coworker went and said it was not great.
Shang-Chi's Cinemascore was A.

Carnage's was B+.

That's a two step difference (A- is in between).

Higher Cinemascores often translate into better word or mouth and re-watchability, which often leads to a final Box Office take at a higher multiplier than the first weekend.

Which means Shang-Chi should have better 'legs' and more people seeing it multiple times. Not to mention if those of Asian descent embrace the movie as much as the Black community embraced Black Panther and sent its box office soaring.

Carnage is a one and done will mixed reviews. So, it would indeed be surprising if Carnage can outpace Shang-Chi.

Not that there's too much competition. After it's Pay 1 window at Netflix, Carnage's Pay 2 will be D+/Hulu/Star.

It's no epic, mind-blowing, superhero movie of the ages for sure. If you go in expecting something like Shang-Chi, Avengers, or even a Spidey film, you'll be letdown. If you go in to just enjoy a fun popcorn action flick, you should enjoy it. I liked it. Didn't love it. We really need these two characters in a Spider film fighting the webslinger himself. Sony, MCU, whomever needs to figure that out.

Could you imagine if DC/Warner Bros went decades of Batman movies and reboots without him ever meeting the Joker?

This is more like a Joker v. Riddler movie without Batman. ;)

After Venom shattered some box office records last weekend, No Time to Die was up next. While the final Craig film did not open to the highest standards, it was not a fizzle either. No Time to Die opened at #1 with an estimated $56M. While this is in the range the industry had it at, it still shows that older audiences are just not willing to come to the theaters to see this movie. The blockbuster is behind other blockbusters that are targeted to a younger audience. With the film sitting at $313.28M worldwide, the film still needs roughly another $400-500M to most likely break even. Venom: Let There Be Carnage took spot #2 with a 64% fall ($32M weekend total). This drop is not too bad for a film that opened at $90M. Yes, it is more than Venom's 2nd-weekend drop, but that film opened $10 million less than this new film. Shang-Chi took spot #4 falling -31% in its 6th weekend. The film has now crossed the $400 million mark ($401.6M to be exact) worldwide and sits at $212M domestic.

As for Disney's other movies in the marketplace, they all just helped Disney cross the $2B mark worldwide. Yes, that is WAY lower than previous years, but a huge accomplishment in pandemic times. If you want to see all the updated totals for each film, check the second post on the first page of this thread.

Moving into the movies, Free Guy and Jungle Cruise are both still in the top 12 at #6 and #11, respectively. Both films have crossed the $100M mark domestically, with Jungle Cruise being at around $200M worldwide and Free Guy at $300M worldwide. Searchlight's two films were right next to each other this weekend at #15 (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and $16 (The Night House). Although, The Night House is doing much better than Tammy Faye as the Jessica Chastain film fell 83% after losing more than 800 theaters. Black Widow most likely has 2 weekends to go before finishing its theatrical run. This weekend, it fell 50% and lost 45 theaters due to limited space and it being free on Disney+.

As for this weekend, we go to blockbuster #3: Halloween Kills. Although, do not expect the horror flick to do that well as you can watch it on Peacock for less than $10. However, a new Disney-owned movie enters the ring with The Last Duel. Predictions should be out Wednesday and I will definitely post them.

1.) No Time to Die (UAR) 4,407 theaters Fri $23.3M/Sat $18.1M/Sun $14.6M/3-day $56M/Wk 1

2.) Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Sony) 4,225 theaters, $9M (-75%)/$13.1M Sat/Sun $9.9M/3-day $32M (-64%)/Total $141.66M/Wk 2

3.) Addams Family 2 (UAR) 4,207 theaters Fri $2.77M (-51%)/Sat $4.2M/Sun $3M/ 3-day $10M (-42%), Total: $31.1M/Wk 2

4.) Shang-Chi (Dis) 2,800 (-655) theaters Fri $1.17M (-28%)/Sat $1.8M/Sun $1.23M/3-day $4.2M (-31%), Total: $212.5M/Wk 6

5.) The Many Saints of Newark (NL) 3,181 theaters Fri $450K/Sat $570K/Sun $430K, 3-day $1.45M (-69%), Total: $7.4M/Wk 2

6.) Free Guy (Dis) 1,495 (-1,050) theaters Fri $350K/Sat $540K/Sun $410K/3-day $1.3M (-42%)/Total $119.7M/Wk 9

7.) Dear Evan Hansen (Uni) 1,927 (-1,437) theaters, Fri $290K/Sat $420K/Sun $290K/3-day $1M (-60%)/Total $13.7M/Wk 3

7.) Lamb (A24) 583 theaters, Fri $415K/Sat $325K/Sun $260K/3-day $1M/Wk 1

9.) Candyman (Uni) 1,153 (-592) theaters, Fri $210K/Sat $310K/Sun $180K/3-day $700K (-45%)/Total $60M/Wk 7

It was another weekend at the box office with both positives and negatives. Halloween Kills was the winner this weekend with a $50.3M opening weekend. This is stellar as the film has been getting very poor reviews and it available on Peacock for less than $10. This gives hope for Dune and The Matrix 4 as they are the only blockbusters with day and date releases still in play. With a great amount of people picking to go to theaters, the two movies should hope that audiences do the same for them. While Michael Myers won the box office, Ridley Scott and his 120-minute historical drama did not. The Last Duel could not even crack $5M as it only opened with $4.8M. According to Variety, the film cost around $100M to make, showing that Disney is surely to lose a lot of money with this film. As for the other non-Disney films, Venom 2, The Addams Family 2, and No Time to Die all had stable holds.

As for Disney's other movies in the marketplace, some have ended their theatrical runs. Black Widow has been pulled from theaters after 14 weekends. Black Widow has finished its run with a domestic total of $183.6M and a worldwide total of $379.3M. The Night House was also pulled from theaters after 8 weekends. The film is available to purchase for $15 on PVOD. The Night House ended its run with a domestic total of $7.1M and a worldwide total of $15.1M. Searchlight acquired the film for $12M, so it is likely the the film was a financial loss. Free Guy and Jungle Cruise both had drops of 45% with weekend totals of $680k and $119k, respectively. The Eyes of Tammy Faye made $24k this weekend, and is most likely going to follow the same route The Night House did considering how it completely sizzled.

As for next week, we have blockbuster #4: Dune. The film will be in theaters and HBO Max on Friday. There is also 20th Century's Ron's Gone Wrong. Box Office Pro predicts that the film will open around $7-12M, but I will also post Deadline's projections when they are out.

1.) Halloween Kills (Uni/Blum/Miramax) 3,705 theaters, Fri $22.8M/Sat $17.2M/Sun $10.3M/ 3-day $50.4M/Wk 1

Ron’s Gone Wrong is projected to make $10M in its opening weekend according to Deadline.

I forgot to mention this on Sunday’s post, but The French Dispatch also hits theaters this Friday in limited release.

It is hard to say if Dune did well at the box office this weekend due to many different things caused by the pandemic. While the film did turn out a solid opening weekend of $40.1M, it is hard to say that it did not sizzle when Halloween Kills was a day and date release and did more. Before I jump to conclusions with that statement, let me point out some facts. Dune is available on HBO Max for free with the $15 subscription. Halloween Kills was available on Peacock with the $5 subscription. HBO Max has about 10 million less subscribers than Peacock's 50 million. (These numbers are from August keep in mind) Lastly, both are linked to an older existing movie. With that information, Halloween Kills seemingly had a bigger audience. (Yes, Halloween Kills fell 71% in its 2nd weekend, but that is normal for a horror flick). While the Halloween franchise has been around longer than Dune, the sci-fi flick has a star-studded cast that the Halloween franchise does not. Does Dune just not have an audience? Did the 150 minute duration set people back from going? Well, these claims may seem reasonable, but Deadline is claiming this:

If Dune clocks a similar U.S. household viewership draw in Samba TV terrestrial homes as the first weekend of New Line/HBO Max Mortal Kombat (3.8M), and we use the average price for Dune tickets from box office firm Market EntTelligence ($14.41), back-of-the-napkin calculations could indicate that some $55M was left on the table at the domestic B.O. with Dune (meaning a possible domestic opening of $95M). However, the only questions with that calculation is a.) how many people who watched Dune at home were going to skip theater anyway, and b.) that calculation is based on one person per household watching this all-star ensemble of Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothee Chalamet at home.

So to be fully honest, it is really hard to tell if Dune was hurt by the HBO Max model or just there not being an audience for it. I saw the film last night and I absolutely loved it! We will just have to see how it does further down the line. Although, I am sure that The Matrix: Resurrections is looking a slight box office letdown with these Dune numbers.

I know, this is a Disney-centered forum. I just wanted to get that out of the way as Dune will definitely come up again in the following weeks. So with that out of the way, let's get into Disney numbers. Disney has 2 new releases this weekend. One did very strong and one did not. To get the bad news out of the way, Ron's Gone Wrong sizzled with a $7.3M opening weekend. This is below the opening weekend of many other recent animated movies. Although, those were all movies based on existing IP. It looks like Ron's Gone Wrong could have been a better Disney+ release as the streamer is still desperate for new content. As for the good news, Wes Anderson was able to score Searchlight and Disney a new pandemic record. The French Dispatch opened in limited release with an opening weekend of $1.3M at 52 theaters. Its per theater average, $25K, is the best of the pandemic so far. The film has beat out Venom 2 ($21.3K per theater) and Black Widow ($19.4K per theater). The French Dispatch expands to 600 theaters in 60 markets next weekend.

As for Disney's other movies in the marketplace, the 5 non-new releases continue to crank out some cash...well some of them. Shang-Chi was able to rack up $2M in its 8th weekend. With only 3 more weeks to go till the film hits Disney+ for free, the film will most likely end its run near $450M worldwide. The Last Duel continues to flop as it fell 56% in its 2nd weekend. The film has a domestic total gross of $8.5M. Of that, Disney will most likely get $4M-5M of that back. Free Guy struggled a bit as it lost 535 thearters due to Dune and Ron's Gone Wrong. The film made $258k in its 11th weekend. Jungle Cruise nears the end of its run with only 145 theaters playing the film still. Of those theaters, the adventure flick made $55k. Lastly, The Eyes of Tammy Faye continues to do microscopic numbers by making $5k in its 6th weekend.

As for this coming weekend, there are two new wide releases. The first is Focus Features' Last Night is Soho. The second is Searchlight's Antlers. Expect Last Night is Soho to blow Antlers out of the water as Disney has put no effort into promoting Antlers.

Before I paste the chart below, Deadline placed an interesting tidbit in the middle of their article.
...as October winds down and we hand off to Disney/Marvel’s Eternals, which we’re hearing is expected to open to around $80M.
It is interesting to see that Eternals is predicted to open just a little bit higher than Shang-Chi's 3-day opening and few million less than Doctor Strange's $85M due to all three movies being debut movies for new Marvel characters. The review embargo lifts at 11AM PST today!! After some mixed Twitter reactions, it will be nice to see a solid RT score.

Yeesh. I was really wrong with this week's box office predictions lol. Looks like I overestimated Last Night in Soho, but underestimated Antlers as they both got the same total! That's right, Last Night in Soho and Antlers had an estimated total of $4.2M. It is not the best total for both films as they could not even crack $5M. I also highly doubt it will find an audience next weekend due to the release of Eternals. It sucks because Last Night in Soho is a phenomenal movie. I have not seen Antlers, but it seems like a great movie. If you have time this week and feel comfortable going to the theaters, go check them out! As for the top 5, four of the five are old releases as they continued making some cash before we begin the next wave of blockbusters.

As for Disney's other movies, there are still seven films making some money. Ron’s Gone Wrong had a 48% second weekend drop, but it still has very low totals. The French Dispatch continues to do amazing as it went up 105% due to adding 736 theaters. This film is doing much better than The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which only made $5k this week. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings slipped out of the top 10 barely making $1M this weekend. Expect the drop to be larger than usual next weekend as Eternals hits theaters. Although, it could stay steady if drive-ins do a double feature like they did with Shang-Chi and Black Widow. The Last Duel continues to sizzle with a $588k weekend total. Free Guy and Jungle Cruise made $77k and $34k, respectively, this weekend.

This Friday we have Eternals! It will be a very interesting weekend as we will see if that nearly rotten Rotten Tomatoes score effects the projected $80M opening in a negative or positive way.

Last Night in soho deserved better… but apparently people don’t want originality… they would rather watch a cookie cutter marvel movie

Not at all expecting that kind of drop from Dune, considering the positive WOM and the fact that the sequel was officially announced.

I predict Dune, like Mad Max: Fury Road, will be the one genre film to get lots of Academy attention this year and for that to keep the film playing for some time and maybe give it a boost later this winter.
