Trip Report 2018-2019 A Year in the Land (Disneyland)...a multi-trip report

Hello and welcome to my trip report for my year as an annual passholder to Disneyland. Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) have been passholders of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World but this year we decided to be exclusive to just the Land. It was a little painful to give up going to WDW this year, we consider it our home park but we also enjoy Disneyland too. I think I have a little more fondness to it than Brad, but anyway.... So why are we passholders for DL exclusively this year instead of WDW or both parks. Well financially it didn't necessarily make sense. Brad is a big Star Wars fan and I'm a big Disney nerd so with Galaxy's Edge opening in the Land earlier than WDW that was a draw. And the D23 Expo is in Anaheim again this year so it checked boxes for both of us.

So I'm going to begin this report a little in the past, 2018, that's right so long ago! :) We traveled to Disneyland over Thanksgiving 2018 and bought our annual passes so that is where we will start the trip report.

Upcoming trips:
A. late March 2019
B. possibly (most likely) a solo trip for me over Easter 2019 (Why solo?...well Brad is a pastor and the congregation kind of expects him to be there over Easter. I'm a teacher and have a nice little break over Easter and the hubs is too busy over Holy week and Easter so he won't really notice I'm gone.)
C. Late June 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays all in June and in the same week. This trip will include Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs as well as Disneyland (and perhaps if rumors are true our first entrance into Galaxy's Edge)
D. our last trip late August for Disneyland and D23 Expo

By the way...if any of you are in Disneyland when our paths cross it would be cool to have any meet ups or say hi. I've met a few awesome WDWMagic members in Walt Disney World and it has been so cool. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see us walking around too!:)

So let's start the first leg of the trip report: November 20-25 2018

Tuesday November 20
Brad and I both had a full day at work. My day should have been full of students but since it is Deer Hunting week (or at least the big gun hunting week) in Wisconsin and Thanksgiving week, our district gives the kids the week off and teachers report for two days of inservice. So it wasn't a hectic day for me. However there was a little kerfuffle in the plan for today. It involved our beloved and spoiled minature schnauzer Kapono.
IMG_5529.JPG

My boss said that we could leave at 3pm instead of 3:30pm so hubby picked me up on the way to drop off Kapono at the kennel. Kapono has only spent 2 days ever in this kennel (good experience) usually she stays with my sister but she was unable to care for her this time. So it was the first time Kapono was going to be spending an extended time in a kennel. So we arrived at the kennel and no one is there, even though it is check-in time and the main building for the kennel is unlocked. So we go inside and wait thinking that maybe the owner is just busy at the house and will be out soon. After 5 minutes no one came even though dogs were barking in her house and in the kennel. So hubs gives her a call. And in the mean time I'm concerned that she left the kennel unlocked! Anyway, the lady was surprised we were calling and had lost track of time and was an hour away from the kennel. But more importantly she was surprised that we were there because she hadn't written down our reservation!!!! Hubs had the email confirmation though. Luckily she had one run left. She said it was luckily for us, but really it was lucky for her!!!! I don't know what we would have done if that run wouldn't have been available though. Although hubs said one of our church members would have pitched in for us. So I took Kapono out into the fenced in yard area and when I let her in she happily ran into the open caged run. I was glad she seemed happy to be there but a little concerned now at the professionalism of the kennel owner. Fast forward to the end of our trip when we picked her up...Kapono had been a good girl there and was safe (and clean). So it all worked out and this over-protective dog mom was happy, and the kennel owner apologized a few times.

So anyway, after we dropped Kapono off we drove up to Minneapolis to the airport for our flight. We ended up being pretty early for our flight but we'd rather wait safely at the airport than be stressed out in traffic. Check in and security took less than 15 minutes so we had a decent meal and drinks at the Minnesota Wild (our favorite hockey team) teamed restaurant). We hadn't planned on eating here but I guess it was fate since we were wearing our Disney Minnesota Wild themed shirts.

The seats we were in used to be 1st class but now the company is going more the Spirit route and these seats were $45 more to the base ticket price. So for that we thought it was a deal to have slightly bigger seats and more foot space for the flight.

Adios Minnesota!
IMG_5767.JPG

We flew into LAX and took an Uber to Anaheim. The traffic was a little heavy in the arrival/departure area so it took our Uber driver a little while about 10-15 minutes to get to us, but it didn't seem too bad. We made it to Anaheim in about 40 minutes (our driver was a speed demon) but that was okay with us. We checked into our hotel the Best Western Park Place Inn, literally across the street from the entrance as seen below. We went to the ticket booth and purchased/cashed in 4 day park hoppers for our annual passes with Max pass and gleefully entered Disneyland with about 40 minutes until park close!

That's right, especially if you jump into my Toy Story Mania car without warning! 😎 I'm glad you liked the pictures, anything for you.🙂
They need to put advice for single riders on the park maps! 1/ Don't slide over when you get in the ride vehicle to prevent randoms hopping in the vehicle with you. 2/ Unless a CM specifically tells you otherwise DONT hop into someone else's vehicle - that's just weird and uncomfortable for everyone 😂

On a trip to Tokyo Disney I attempted to ride Indiana Jones ride as a single rider.
The CM actually asked the family if it was ok for me to join them ( at least I think he did - a lot of gesturing , pointing and nodding of heads).
So I will not be jumping into a vehicle with Amy - I will ask for permission first!!!

I left DCA and headed into the Grand California. I decided to treat myself to a nice meal so I went to see if there was any space at the Napa Rose lounge. I have never eaten at Napa Rose but I heard it was great, to be honest the menu never tempted me in the past but I had looked at the recent menu and there were a couple things that were intriguing.

There was space in the lounge, and the full menu can be ordered in the lounge so that fit my needs well. I did feel a bit under dressed in my spirit jersey and shorts even though there were plenty of people in park going attire like me. Maybe it was because earlier in the day I had dropped a big gob of mac and cheese on my shirt so I was a little self conscious of the stain. Anyway, I had a nice table by the fireplace and ended up enjoying my meal.

At the beer tasting seminar I had an IPA that I really liked. I'm not normally an IPA beer drinker so I thought I'd give this one a whirl. Yeah, I ended up leaving a lot of this guy in the glass when I left. It wasn't good, it tasted really bitter.
View attachment 378555

And "free" bread! The wheat sour dough wasn't great so I only took one bite but the other two types of bread....so tasty. The roll was a garlic and something tasty (maybe sundried tomato) flavor, sorry I can't remember. And the flat bread was crispy and herby, so good. I totally paid for it later with some high blood sugar but I was worth it at the time.

The fire was going, but it doesn't look like it in the picture.

My appetizer...

"Carbonara" Handcrafted Chicken Agnolotti
with Spring Onion, Pancetta and Parmigiana Cloud

I had to look up what Agnolotti was before I ordered and found out it was like little ravioli, so I was sold. And it was really good. And I used some of my bread to sop up the sauce. It was either use the bread or lick the bowl!

Then I got the duck for my entree.

Maple Leaf Farms "Duck à l'Orange"
Duck Confit, Yukon Gold Potatoes, Braised Chard, Grilled Endive, and Tangelo Essence

The 4 little potatoes I got were under the duck. This was very good too. I ended up too stuffed for dessert, so now I guess I'll have to go back sometime!

And a couple shots looking into the lounge area as I left.

It was atmosphericly dim, enough to be calming but no the super great for pictures.

😳my reaction to your question as I didn't know there were different styles. I do remember him saying once that he doesn't dance the West Coast swing. 🙂
There are a lot....we did basic Jitterbug and a bit of Jive. (we being my brother and I) We wanted to move on to the next level, where we'd have learned Lindy, but there weren't enough people who signed up, so we couldn't. :( Lindy has a different timing and it's a lot faster feeling. Swing dancing is GREAT exercise. We had so much fun, and I lost weight when we did the classes, and it was only during the one summer. I'd love to do it again!

Hey all, I realize I need to get moving on this report and finish my solo trip because we will soon be back in California! Together this time.

So back to my solo trip....Easter Sunday 2019

As I got ready this morning I watched most of the Easter church service from home that Brad had live streamed on Facebook. Then after breakfast at the hotel I set out to spend the day in Disneyland. Once rope drop hit I walked swiftly to Alice and I to my enjoyment I ended up being the 3rd or 4th caterpillar of the day. I got into my caterpillar and once I entered the show building I noticed something was off. Alice wasn't telling me how she went down, down, down down the rabbit hole. There was no audio! Disappointing for sure but I knew a lot of the spiel and I recited some of it and made up my own. The audio did come back in as the Queen of Hearts was shouting "off with their heads!". When I got to the unload area the cast member asked me if I had ridden with or without audio and I told her it came on towards the end and she told me to stay in the caterpillar. So I got another ride! Yay me! I spent most of the morning on Fantasyland attractions including Casey Jr, teacups, Matterhorn, etc....

This is a hub picture from later in the morning, not rope drop.

Dumbo!
IMG_7589.JPG

I did go over to Big Thunder Mt and as I was in the queue I noticed that the bolts (or whatever, I'm not mechanical) on some of the wood poles said Big Thunder on them.

And another Dumbo sighting.

Sunday....Easter April 2019

More wandering around Disneyland. I rode Space Mountain one time with a fast pass and then I decided to try single rider immediately after and I was back on the ride in about 2-3 minutes (AWESOME!). I went into space with Buzz, had some Jungle Cruisin', rode the trolley, stalked the Dapper Dans, and enjoyed an orange whip at the Tropical Hideaway.

The entry into Adventureland was strange because they had recently removed the big arching sign that went over the walkway and replaced it with a small sign to the right had side. The archway sign is back but I guess the small sign was from the 1970's and once used in the Tahitian Terrace so that was a fun bit of history to see.

The Straw hatters band. After I took this picture I settled on a bench under the tree in full bloom. It smelled good under there and was a great place to listen to the band.

Easter Sunday April 2019

Here is a look at the beautiful blooms I was sitting under. And a quick shot of the Easter bunny. I was going to get my picture with the Easter bunny but every time I got over to the line when he was out they shut it down. Then out of the park and to Downtown Disney, I forgot to put those pictures in this post so I will in the next) and had lunch. When I returned to the park after lunch I saw people gathering in front of the train station and I figured that the band (yay!) would be performing soon. So I texted Brad to go on Facebook at home and I was going to stream the band for him. Well, we were both in for a treat, not only was it the Disneyland band, but characters and the Dapper Dans! Brad adores them! It was fun to watch.

Easter Sunday April 2019

Back to lunch. I decided to head over to Naples for lunch. I like their pizza (same as Via Napoli) and the patio seating is very nice and good for people watching. I thought about eating inside as it had recently been redone but I'm glad I didn't. As I was being led to my table on the patio the hostess took me through the main dining room and for some reason it smelled incredibly fishy and I hate that smell. The patio area was very nice and I enjoyed my pizza. The bread with olive oil and balsamic was good too. The plan was to eat half the pizza and take the rest back with me but I guess I was more hungry than I thought because I had 2 pieces of bread and ate the whole pizza (minus some of the crust that was left behind)

Easter Sunday April 2019

After purchasing Brad's popcorn bucket I decided to take in the Mickey and Magical Map show. Great show as always. And even though I wasn't hungry that popcorn had to go somewhere so I ended up eating most of it. I did put some in a ziploc bag and put it in the small area in the bucket that closed up. After they show I headed over to the train station quick before the show's crowds mobbed the station and soon got on a train headed for the front of the park. The dinosaurs were back so I took a couple of bad pictures of them, we had missed seeing them in March. Once back to Main Street I headed back to my hotel to maybe get in a little bit of pool time and a nap. I only ended up soaking my feet in the cold pool and chatting with Brad on the phone, but I did take a nice nap after some pool area time.

After my nap/pool time I headed over to DCA for a bit, I had a fast pass for Guardians, Indcredicoaster & Toy Story Mania. I ran into the Newsboys doing their show in Carthay Circle, it was strange without the Red Trolley. I had the chicken dinner at Flo's in Carsland and it was very tasty. It was a different style than the Plaza Inn. Once I had done my fast passes, had dinner, and done a few more attractions I headed over to Disneyland for the rest of the night.

I'm not quite sure what I did in the park but I do have a picture of the Haunted Mansion so I know I did that before getting a spot at it's a small world for the Mickey Mix Magic fireworks. The projections were really good in this area, it was a good spot to watch the show from and it wasn't crowded at all.

I saw on Disney Food Blog I think? that Disneyland is going to be using the original Soarin' over California video for a month. I don't know if you have any more trips planned, but I think it said June and I thought of you, since you are doing California this year. I know some people prefer the original over the new Soarin' around the world.

Another beautiful Disneyland day. I was still surprised that the crowds were pretty low, but no complaints about that! Once in Town Square Mickey came out and was wandering, but he wasn't stopping for pictures so I walked around with him (and others hoping for a good pictures) for a bit stalking for him but settled for some pictures on the fly. Then I roped dropped Alice and enjoyed Fantasyland and I got my back caboose seat on Casey Jr!

I had a nice cruise on small world before heading into Toontown. Toontown was fun to explore but I was hoping to get a picture with Mickey and Minnie at their houses but they weren't home so I went on Gadget's Go Coaster which is short but fun. I also did Roger Rabbit, and now I remember how much I don't care for it. I don't mind the spinning but I'm just not into the story line.
