I've been doing some searches on the internet and the year of 2011 keeps coming up for Disney both its movie division and its parks. What is so special about that year. Is there any truth to it?

Hawaii, Japan, 5th Gate, year of movie sequels... the list goes on.

Any other things happening?

beastly Kingdom(kingdomme?), and the fifth gate while confirmed to being made is still being spitballed on the actual theme, as far as I'm concerned "night kingdom" is a development name like Blue Harvest(star wars dev name)

Disney Unveils Nature Film Unit After Success Of 'Penguins'
By RYAN NAKASHIMA
AP Business Writer

BURBANK, Calif. -- Following the box office success of "March of the Penguins," The Walt Disney Co. said Monday it launched a new film production unit called Disneynature to produce and distribute documentary films through at least 2012.

The 2005 documentary about penguin families surviving in Antarctica grossed $127 million at the global box office but cost just $3 million to make, said Jean-Francois Camilleri, who helped Disney co-produce the film and will head the new unit as executive vice president.

"First of all it was a great film," Camilleri said. "The fact that it worked shows that people had an appetite for it."

The first film to be released in the U.S. will be "Earth" on Earth Day, April 22, 2009. A separate version of the BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media production was previously released in France, Japan and Germany and earned a total of $70 million.

"Earth" focuses on a yearlong journey of three mothers -- a polar bear, elephant and humpback whale -- with their offspring.\

The first film released with the Disneynature brand will be "The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos." It will premier in France in December, with other release dates yet to be announced.

Disney chief executive Robert Iger said the unit marks a return to the Disney tradition. Among other things, the company made the film series "True-Life Adventures" from 1948 to 1960.

He expects the movies to receive wide release in theaters and create spinoff products that could appear in Disney enterprises on the Internet and in bookstores and theme parks.

The films are expected to create new product lines without straining animation or other studio resources, he said.

"When you create high-quality family entertainment, you can have both success and create shareholder value," he said.

Disney shares rose 13 cents, or 0.4 percent, to close at $31.46.

Well 2011 is the year before the Mayan calendar ends (on 12/21/2012) when some speculate the earth will come to an end. Maybe the powers that be are giving us one last year of a million dreams before we bite the big one! :hammer::ROFLOL:

Iger took power at the end of 2005. So 2011 is five to six years after Iger became CEO. So three years to build, and a couple years to plan puts the timetable right at 2011.

One of the new cruise ships should be finished & ready for sailing in 2011. The other one's supposed to be done in 2012.

Some of the people on the boards who have connections have said that the 40th will definitely be celebrated. Since 2011 is the year of the 40th, my assumption would be to expect new rides and attractions as well as a few refurbishments for the 40th. That is just a guess though.

2011 looks great for the company worldwide.

But they better have something in Florida in 2009. That's what He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named said anyway.

Don't count on much in 2009. AI and TSM will be promoted as the new attractions in 2009 and I believe Space Mountain will be the BIG "new" attraction for 2010. It appears to me that everything is being geared up for the 40th Anniversary. That will be an awesome year IMO!

HP at IOA really won't be THAT big of a deal. (don't kill me HP lovers).

What I mean by that is-
Will some people go to IOA that haven't before? Yes.
Some will plan a day or two out of their Disney trip.
Some will go just to IOA and not Disney that never go to WDW anyway.
Some will do both.
Some will do just one or the other.

However, IMHO, no one is going to now plan to never go to WDW again (if they already were going there) just because they are now going to spend their Orlando vacation entirely at IOA.

Is HP a draw for IOA? Yes. Will it in any way effect the numbers at WDW? No. (in any meaningful, noticeable way)
Will it effect the numbers at IOA? Yep. USF? Probably.

Let's hope all of the Orlando tourist attractions keep up this growth for the future!

Disney is definitely playing a wait and see approach as they decide how best to respond to Universal and Sea World additions. And in the end we (theme park fans) will be the big winners. HP going to Universal Orlando is one of the BEST things to happen to WDW............ever!!!!!!!

I have been thinking about the whole HP thing. I believe the best thing for Disney to do is to ride out the first couple of years when HP opens. I mean think about it, most people are going to visit IOA no matter what Disney does. Disney will experience a certain dip in attendance as people use one of there Disney days to visit IOA. (I will be one of them b/c I am a Harry Potthead) That said, in 2011 HP will not be the hot new thing in Orlando. Disney could announce a lot of big projects for 2011 and gain back the market share they will undoubtedly loose to IOA in 2009 and 2010. Just my 2 cents worth.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
They haven't announced the names yet. I'm hoping for either Fantasy, Dreams, Imagination, or Celebration.

I don't mean to be rude, but :hurl:. If the mouse shoves those words (or wishes, magic, or wonder) down my throat anymore, I'm liable to start wearing all black and listening to Fallout Boy just to balance it all out. I know those are the reasons we came to WDW, but do we need to be reminded so freaking often?!?
