20,000 Leagues Under the Sea- Could it Return?

I doubt it would ever come back. Let's not forget it was a book (and a darn good one), before the movie :)

I hope they do bring it back but oh well. If they ever do build a MI for the Animal Kingdom they could put it there.

It was my favorite as a kid. Maybe not perfect, but very special. A refurb or two could have taken care of things like the silly sea monster. I would have kept it forever.

It definetly will not be a Nemo themed underwater adventure for the fact it is already at the Living Seas in Epcot. And to bring back 20k leagues would probably cost to much for the actual interest that would be involved. I am sure they would be able to fill that space where it was more wisely than to bring it back. But that is just my opinion.

Different ride, not clam-mobile sub-marine

The only rumors I've heard about 20k coming back have to do with DAK building mysterious island. Since I don't see that attraction coming anytime soon to DAK, I'm going to say we may see it, but not for something like 10 years.

I never got to ride this true classic, it pains me that it was removed for Pooh's playful spot. I'm looking forward to the DL version though - even though it's not the original, I'm sure the experience will be great.

Will it return? I doubt it - there will be too many people who see this as wasting money on old ideas.

Yeah, I miss 20k.
Mostly because I always had fun, but also because I was a huge fan of Harper Goff's Nautilus.
I have many fond childhood memories of standing for a long time, leaning on the fake lava rocks, watching the Nautilus' cruise through that beautiful lagoon. Fantasyland is sorely lacking without that.:(

Well it's obvious by my name that I would love a new "re-imagineered" 20K ride. It certainly wasn't the most sophisticated ride, but it was so unique that any poor show was made up for by the fact that it was the only ride like it in the world.

And the kinetics from the subs moving around the lagoon was second to none. It is sorely missed.

Unfortunately, the track record of building rides to coincide with movies is poor recently. Cars has been out for a while and they are only now making attractions to support the franchise.

I think it would take the movie being a modestly large success both financially and critically for management to consider building an attraction based on it. Plus, factor in the time between now and the movie being produced and distributed, and the time between the movie being released and the decision to build. Then the decision to build and the actual construction. Years and years and years is my best (although not my first) guess.

I just hope they don't butcher either the book or the classic film.

I have nothing but good memories about that ride. I agree with Lee, I remember waiting in line for quite some time but there was just something magical about the rocks, the waterfall, the lagoon, and seeing the subs moving throughout the lagoon. And yes, the underwater creatures were obviously not real, some almost cartoon-like, but it didn't take away from the experience for me. I was sad to see it closed but certainly understand the reasoning behind it. If the ride was resurrected in some form or shape, I'm sure the newer version would be much more grand and, from a management perspective, much more efficient & practical.

The underwater ride? In the MK? Never.

Dry for wet as used in Tokyo is much easier and cheaper all round without sacrificing show quality. If and when 20K was to appear in Orlando again it`d be in another park using that method.

When it appears...

It would be possible to rebuild the ride... Even on a possible new location and / or another park...

But it will never happen under this management...

Yeah, that is the caveat. Even if we ignore the remake, the original is becoming popular again in its own right, thanks to cable. The ride still has a following in other countries (technically not a ride in Paris); why did WDW management think Americans were too stupid to appreciate the story?

They didn't want to pay for the upkeep of the story. First of the "wonderful" new management moves after all the old folks got kicked or bought out.

But the submarines themselves were the coolest looking ride vehicles ever built! :king: I miss seeing them cruising the lagoon much, much more than anything else about the attraction.
That's my feeling too. Losing 20K (and the Skyway) sapped a lot of kinetic energy from the park.

I think one of the most important elements in a Magic Kingdom-style park is just a sense of motion or "busyness." Horse trolleys on Main Street, the TTA, the monorail (in DL anyway), the railroad...I think their value is more in adding a sense of activity to the place than as modes of transport. That's the biggest hole I think some of the recent changes, like removing the subs and the Skyway, has left.
