Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

OK, that was the first post of this whole thing. Now here comes the table of contents. Separate trip reports will be listed in bold. Regular stuff won't.

When are you there in Oct?

We're trying to nail that down now. Brian works at a major sports arena and it can be tricky to plan in advance. Even though we can look at team schedules for home vs. away games, things can change, there are pop-up events that get added at the last minute, etc., and the company is not forgiving about missing a day. That's why we typically end up going relatively last minute for something like 2 nights at a time during season.

But we're sitting down with a calendar hopefully today to get an idea because the day Disney announces their fall specials, I want to be ready to book for best availability/pricing. (I don't think I can get my AP discount yet because we haven't activated our AP's yet, but we can get the FL resident discounts and those are typically almost identical.)

B says we would be leaning early October based on the team schedules. (Hope so - shorter wait! LOL.)

Then we can still use our TiW card which is good until Halloween - and we can hit F&W.

That will probably have to hold us over until around May 2017, and then the big event that September. It all depends on how many points we amass in advance. Wild card: we get a ton of points around Christmas and end up doing our traditional mid-January visit as well.

Ah I'm there 10/24-11/2 was gonna say if we were there at the same time we'd have to say hi!

OK where were we?

2 AP's + $311.48

+ June points - a little low - $87.87

= 2 AP's + (omg, it couldn't just be $400? LOL) $399.35

re: the whole October thing - Brian is really well-healed already, has been back to work and everything is fine. So that should not be a concern!

His work schedule is pretty packed, though - it seems there will be a game or event at the Stadium every weekend in October (which means a lot of hours during the week to prep as well.) I hate to whisk him away to WDW during those times, because he doesn't get to rest at all. (But he'll do it if I make the reservations LOL.)

And again, we can't break in our tickets until after at least 9/12 or so, so that they'll still be good for a few days next year around 9/8.

So that leaves either late September (when we can still use our TiW card) or early November (when we can't.) Traditionally, early November has been a good little trip time for me, because it signals my burial into retail hell when we return, not to be seen again until Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve LOL. Looks like it will be another fairly last-minute plan, which is fine.

And I know Tuvalu warned me, but I'm sure we'll use some of those points on this trip. It's been a pretty rough summer, money-wise with Brian out of work for about 2 months, plus the extra medical bills. Not complaining - if that was going to happen, it was the best time of year for it to happen, and it went as well as anybody could expect, so we are very grateful for that. The tickets are paid for, so we'll either use points for one night on property and pay for a second night, or we'll just stay off property and use maybe $150 in points for meals. (We'll have some more points by then, anyway.) No guilt! LOL.

Minor point and I'm not going to include this in the running total, but I went ahead and opened the Disney Vacation Account yesterday. What sold me is the free $20 gift card per $1K saved LOL. At most I'd end up with 40 bucks (only planned for 20 so far) but it's a painless way to save extra.

Still trying to nail down our Food & Wine visit. You know when you just start back at work, it's hard to nail down a schedule, time off, etc. Brian just started back at Miami Dolphin Stadium (Sun-Life) and there have already been changes in the game schedule.

I just started looking at some of the Florida Resident and AP room discounts (currently running through 11/4) and found the best rates are already gone for September. They're a little better in October but not as low as we usually get.

So this may be an off-property, 2/3 day drive-up with the pup. Plus it's probably better to save the money and the points for next year rather than on a moderate resort for a quickie trip. We'll see! (I'm one of those people who examines every option 14 times before making a decision LOL. Yes, I annoy myself.) This would be a bonus trip vs. our "I need a break and pampering" trips post-Christmas (mid-Jan) and post-Record Store Day (early May.) And that's the basic schedule for this AP: F&W 2016, Jan 2017, May 2017, Anniversary/F&W 2017 and then a year off.

I'm LOVING everything about this!!! (Anyone who has their Honeymoon in KW is automatically someone that I want to follow, in the most non stalkerish way ;) )

Congrats on the upcoming anniversary!!!

I would definitely stay somewhere that's budget friendly for your trips before the big one. I feel ya on the "every option 14 times" part, I'm exactly the same..and then change my mind another 14 times.

Here's a savings tip that I've been implementing (or attempting to) the past 2 months.. If you're a frequent patron of Starbucks, or if you use a vending machine at work, or if you do Cheesecake Factory or even Panera for lunch while working, try to stop/cut back. I went from 6-8 venti lattes per week down to 2 or 3, goal was 1..still trying...and stopped getting a breakfast sandwich there as well. Each time I want to go, or order lunch, I remind myself of the goal I'm reaching for- immediately I transfer money into my savings. Since the beginning of June I've already saved over $300! Hooray for "found money"!!!!

Good luck and I look forward to reading more!!

That's awesome. We basically did a "no eating out" thing for the last few months, kind of had to since Brian was out of work and recovering from the back surgery. That helped a lot (and it's healthier!) Other than that, we're pretty "bare bones" as it is. (I do have to throw away catalogs that come in the mail, or Brian will order stuff in the middle of the night - not kidding! He'll also read every spam email and take it seriously LOL.) Thanks for reading!

I went thru a period in the early 2000s where I became totally addicted to late night infomercials. Almost every week a new "miracle" exercise equipment would show up on my doorstep. I was out of control.. So I can completely relate to him! Glad I got out of that short phase, especially because most of the equipment was junk lol.

omg true confession: I bought the "Mega Memory" kit in the 90's. Ended up selling it on ebay for almost what I paid though LOL.

Well, October turned into September! (What willpower?)

Just booked a quickie - September 13th to 15th - staying off property, someplace we've stayed before that was cheap & decent.

Will be able to go to Food & Wine on day one for the first time - and get our fix. Next planned trip would be mid-January, but who knows, there could be a November or December (more likely December) quickie as well.

So with the hotel paid for and the tickets paid for, we'll really just be digging into our points for some of the food (and wine.) And we'll get our August points added in before then as well.

Ta-da!

Leaving the puppy home with the sitter. No pets at this hotel. :(

Oh goody--Sept. 13-15 isn't far away, so all your fans can look forward to a TR in the not-to-distant future!

Bummer that you can't take Kylie this time, but she'll be fine at home with the sitter. At least it's not as long a separation this time.

Because I'm crazy (and might drag you guys to Crazytown with me)

I started looking into the specifics for our trip, and realized I had completely forgotten about the Eat To The Beat concert series! Our reservation for the 14th would include an appearance by Wang Chung (new this year to the event.)

Well, OK, that's cool, I like 80's music, we somewhat specialize in it at my record store. OTOH, ho hum. They do two songs I know, and...can live without, if I'm being honest.

We always end up going into the Chase Visa lounge and always get offered wristbands for the concerts, and so far it's always been someone I wouldn't mind missing and/or didn't want to miss a fastpass to see LOL. (Last year was Sugar Ray. Missed it.) We've never ended up there when one of our favorites were performing.

So I looked down the page a bit and...OK, I'm old-ish and born in 1971 (like WDW and the Willy Wonka movie) - and on the 19th and 20th, it's Air Supply.

Wang Chung - meh. Air Supply - I love them! So does Brian. (So does my mom LOL. But she's not coming.)

Side story: when Brian and I were still dating, and I took a drive up from FL to NJ alone to visit my family (and deliver a car for a "snowbird" friend of the family) I was somewhere on I-95 on the phone with my sister, and we started discussing ideas for me to propose to Brian...

At that very moment, Brian beeped in on call waiting, and said, "I think when you come home we need to talk about making things permanent." Damn! Steal my thunder, why don't you?!

Then a moment later, he called me back and put the phone up to the radio because "Two Less Lonely People In The World" by Air Supply was playing.

Dork!

But I still remember that. This had to have been October of...2006. To continue my completely OT tangent: When I flew home a couple of days later, he picked me up at the airport, dropped me off at my apartment (because I had to get ready for work shortly) and I immediately ran out to Target and bought two very inexpensive (but cute) stainless steel rings, went to his apartment, and proposed (because I had to be first LOL.)

Don't worry, we got nicer rings when we got married!

Anyway, back to the topic, I had booked the hotel through Orbitz, so it was easy to cancel and rebook (and add another night.) So now we are driving up on Sunday the 18th (Disney Springs since we have weekday AP's) and will have two full park days, the 19th and 20th, and drive home on the 21st.

Ta-da!

First ADR made for the first night - Sunday at Disney Springs - Chef Art Smith's Homecoming Dinner (yay!)

It's late - 9:20PM - but that's all that was available right now. I'll check back a few times before the trip and see if anything earlier opens up.

We love him from TV (he is always losing celebrity chef contests LOL.)

I guess we've become food TV groupies - Kat Cora, Morimoto, and Art at WDW, Paula Deen in Savannah, Hubert Keller in Vegas...

Trying to keep the costs down this trip, but can't resist. I think I have to go for Flying Fish also, either Monday or Tuesday, depending on the other "must do's" - Food & Wine, Air Supply, Star Wars Fireworks, and *maybe* evening at AK, although there will be no Jungle Book or ROL on this trip, so if anything can get cut, it will probably be that. Only two park nights (Monday & Tuesday) and then probably leaving after lunch on Wednesday. (We always think we'll stay longer on the last day, but always find we want to get home - how weird is that - and don't want to put ourselves in the way of evening rush hour or that little drive gets very big very quickly.)

Excited for Hummingbird cake! (and Moonshine.) (and pork.)

Booked Trysch the puppysitter.

Gotta sit down with all the park hours, EMH, crowd calendars, etc. and figure out a rough plan of where to go/where to avoid on which days. And email our bartender from Tune-In for her schedule LOL. Yes, I said it.

I'm even going to be all touristy and try to book a FP for Frozen when I'm eligible in a few days. And the new Soarin!

Also would like to do some of the cheap demo's at F&W. Another sort of celeb chef we like from Top Chef - Bryan Voltaggio - is doing one on our days.

I'm all over the place but psyched LOL!
