1985 monorail fire

Does anyone have a scan of the picture from the Orlando Sentinal that actually had a picture of the burned cab of the monorial June 25th 1985 ( I think that was the date)
No one was hurt, well except the Orlando Sentinal for putting it in the paper.

I never even knew about this. I want to see this.

(Side note: I originally thought your subject said Monorail FARE... I was like, "They use to charge?")

:D

I was working the day that happened. It made the local television coverage, too. I seem to recall they had news video of people being evacuated via a cherry picker type machine. I don't think anyone was injured, thank goodness.

It was this one event that Disney decided to install the Alison Heat Detection systems in all the Mark IV trains. The Mark VI trains had them built into the design. But the Mark IV's were retrofitted. And BTW I believe the fire was in Mark IV Silver.

In 1986 a Mark IV monorail (silver) caught on fire. The back two cars were burned badly. The cars were occupied, but everyone got off of the train okay. The train was on the Epcot beam south of the Magic Kingdom toll plaza. There was a side tire failure and the fragments from that tire lodged in the skirts where they eventually caught fire.

Now there are beam contact sensors that will indicate when a side tire blows and a heat detection system that alerts the driver before things can get too hot in critical areas.

This even also triggered a media standoff between the Orlando Sentinel and the Walt Disney World Company over pictures published of the charred monorail in the next day's paper. Putting this diplomatically, no media service in Central Florida has since published an unfavorable story about the Company. More information about the fire can be purchased from the Orlando Sentinel Website in their archives.

That is not true. The problem with the Orlando Sentinel is that they tend to sensationalize their stories.....I have never seen a paper with so many corrections posted, nor one that publishes so many stories that are based on rumors.

The Sentinel does know who pays the bills though. A few years ago, they kept running stories on the front page about how we should add to the tourist tax and basically make the tourists pay for more schools in Orange County. Since the paper is given to guests by many hotels in the area, many hotels, including the hotels that I work with (which has around 10,000 rooms in the city) threatened to stop distributing the paper if the negative tourism stories continued.

The Orlando Sentinal was the paper that broke the story of Disney coming to Florida and they were biased toward Disney initially but I don't think they are as much as they once were. Although it is a real paper it seems to be very "entertainment" based with more stories about garbage than real news. I like a more factual even a little dry paper. Speck is right LOTS of rumors-

So far no luck on the picture

I have had numerous contacts but nothing yet.
If I do get my hands on it I will post it here.

The newpaper is like all others. They do and say what there owners want.
All I care is to see the picture. I dont read it.

more info

Real incidents do occasionally occu...re things can get too hot in critical areas. http://www.mcjackie.com/monorail.html

Real incidents do occasionally occur, however. One night during the summer in 1985 a Mark IV monorail caught on fire. The back two cars were burned badly. The cars were occupied, but everyone got off of the train okay. The train was on the Epcot beam south of the Magic Kingdom toll plaza. As I understand it, there was a side tire failure and the fragments from that tire lodged in the skirts where they eventually caught fire. Now there are beam contact sensors that will indicate when a side tire blows and a heat detection system that alerts the driver before things can get too hot in critical areas.

Reportedly, the burned rail is still visible, though just barely, where the fire and melting plastic left its mark.
