10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

Day 0 (Tuesday): The Surprise and the Unveiling.
Since the first day of planning our WDW trip, we wanted to keep this vacation a surprise for our DD until the day we’re to leave for WDW. We got some great ideas from the forums and our plan was to have a special package sitting in front of our door from Princess Tiana (since we were staying at POR), inviting the entire family to join her at POR in one of her special guest rooms.
Our plan was for our DD to get the package when she got home from school and when the package was opened, out pops a Disney Princess balloon with a special invitation for our DD and for the family to come to WDW.

On numerous occasions, she would often tell me that we have to go to Disneyland in the summer because “we always go to Disneyland in 2s”.
Her explanation of what that meant went something like this.
“We have to go to Disneyland in the summer because we always go to Disneyland in 2s. We went to Disneyland when I was 2 ½ years old, and when I was 4 ½ years old and so when I’m 6 ½, we need to go to Disneyland.”

In those moments, it was really hard not to tell her that we’re going to WDW during Spring Break. We did have some slip ups & close calls so DW and I had to use special secret codes when talking about our WDW plans.

Next up: Day 1: Are we there yet?

Day 1 (Wednesday): Red-eye Flight and Arrival at POR.
Logged 5.47 miles on the Pedometer (12,840 steps) for the day.

Our flight out of Seattle was at 10pm with a 1 ½ hour layover at Charlotte, arriving at MCO at 9:15am. Alaska Airlines only had 1 flight daily that flew direct from SEA to MCO but at the cost of $800/ ticket, I couldn’t justify spending an extra $1000 for our family of 3 to fly direct. The red-eye flight also made it so that we could enjoy a full day at WDW on our arrival day.

We arrived at MCO without any problems or delays and were soon making our way to our DME bus.

IMG_1065.jpg

Even though everybody has seen this a hundred times but a picture of the WDW sign is a must for every trip am I right?
IMG_1071.jpg

We arrived at POR around 10am, it was sunny & low 70s, no humidity, and when we got off our bus, the resort CMs were standing by and blowing bubbles at us and welcoming us home.
It was literally a picture perfect moment, not having been back in almost 8 years.
IMG_1072.jpg

… and the best of all, our room was READY !!!

We headed out of the lobby, over the bridge and over to Oak Manor, anticipation & anxiety building with each & every step eager to see what the Royal rooms looked like.

Overall, great theme all over the room from the carpet to the beds to the lighting. Having stayed in Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Yacht Club in our last 2 WDW vacations, just the room in itself and the themeing of the room, I would say the room was very comparable to what you’d expect in a Deluxe room.

We were on the 2nd floor with very little foot traffic and with views of the pool and the Sassagoula River. Location was great with a very short walk to the lobby, restaurants, and the bus stop. Parterre Place had no occupancy as they were converting the rooms into Royal rooms so the pool right next to our room (located between Oak Manor and Parterre Place) was practically empty the entire duration of our trip. At most, there were probably 20 people swimming & sitting around the pool.

After getting settled in, our first stop was to go to Fulton’s General Store to pick up an autograph book.

After Fulton’s General Store, our next agenda was to head over to EPCOT for Future World and lunch since we haven’t had breakfast yet.
Oh and did I mention that the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival was going on?

Lunch plan was to head to Sunshine Seasons while taking pictures of the Flower & Garden Festival along the way.

At Sunshine Seasons, I had the Seared Tuna Noodle Salad which was served cold. This dish was a seared spicy tuna served rare over Asian soba noodles (like what you’d get in Yakisoba stir fry dish) topped with pickled julienne carrots, cucumbers, & onions. Once I got over the initial surprise of the dish being served cold, I found the dish to be very well flavored, had a nice little kick, and the tuna portions were definitely not stingy.

They were giving away free FPs to Living with the Land so after lunch, we used our FPs for Living w/ the Land, did Circle of Life and skipped Soarin’ as the Standby & FP times were too long as we had ADR at 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian for 5:00pm.

Anybody see anything odd about this fountain?
IMG_3270.jpg

The temperature peaked at 81 degrees for the day (absolutely perfect!!) and we decided to take the monorail to Grand Floridian a little bit earlier than our scheduled ADR at 1900 Park Fare so that we could take some pictures of the property.

The quality of the food at 1900 Park Fare was forgettable and probably the worst meal I had the entire vacation. The dinner at 1900 Park Fare serves food that features typical buffet chicken, beef, & potatoes. There was nothing special or outstanding about the food nor the desserts, EXCEPT for their strawberry soup which was served cold and definitely the highlight of the entire meal.

DW and I have done our share of buffets and for the first time ever, we had no desire to go back and get second servings not even to get dessert. What did save the dinner were the amazing character interactions with Cinderella & Prince Charming, Anastasia & Drizella. Anastasia & Drizella were completely in character playing the wicked stepsisters and had amazing interactions with each other and the guests and it was truly a unique opportunity that you don’t experience at any other character meals at WDW.

Prince Charming putting on his charms on our Madelyn (who is waaaay too young to be thinking about boys) ...

IMG_3316.jpg

IMG_3318.jpg

With the total price of our meal coming out to just under $100 for the three of us, it’s hard to justify if it would be worth the price of admission. While I think it’s definitely something everybody should do once for the experience of watching the wicked stepsisters interact with each other and the guests, I don’t think we’ll be coming back for quite some time. This was just our experience and who knows, you may have better food experience than we did.

After dinner we decided to check out the GF property more and took the monorail to Magic Kingdom to take the bus transfer back to POR as tiredness started to creep in.

The wait for our bus to POR seemed to be unusually long and something that seemed odd to me was that 2 POFQ busses that came & went before our POR bus finally showed up.

Wow! What a full day we had on our first day at WDW.

Next up: Day 2: MK & a special dinner

Oh My Gosh is your daughter adorable. I love them at that age, such hams. Our daughter would do poses in the water at Typhoon Lagoon. They are so funny. I have to beg her to stand still now for a picture.

Also, your pictures are beautiful. Can't wait to see more.

What a wonderful way to tell your daughter! I loved it! Your story about the "2's" is too precious.

And the picture of her and the prince is adorable.

Great royal room pictures too!

I can't wait for more!

Loving the TR. Your pics of PORS are great. That is our favorite resort and they're making me homesick. Hint for next time you stay at PORS, always take a POFQ bus from MK. Then walk or boat back to PORS. It's quicker and an easy way to "resort hop". Can't wait to read more.

Thank you! Our DD does have her moments. Fortunately for us, DD is never shy in front of a camera which makes for great photo opportunities as I'm sure you'll see in the rest of our TR.

She was definitely smitten by the Prince as you don’t get to see very many Princes at Character meals.

Wish we knew about the POFQ buses before our trip as the POFQ buses were always less crowded than the PORS busses. And the walk from POFQ to our room was actually very short given the location of our room.

The Royal room actually exceeded my expectations. Port Orleans definitely has one of the best property themeing at WDW. POR just needs to sell beignets and they’d be a perfect 10/10 in my book.

We’re so glad we decided to stay at POR for the entire duration of our trip as it really gave us the opportunity to enjoy & appreciate the property more.

What a great way to unveil the trip! Great pics! Love the Port. Looking forward to the next installment.
